What is special about Macy’s Herald Square?
A flagship with a long retail history
Macy’s says the Herald Square store opened in 1902. The company’s account says its 1924 expansion stretched along 34th Street from Broadway to Seventh Avenue and brought the store to one million square feet; it expanded again in 1931. These dates describe the company’s history of the flagship, not a claim that every part of the present-day store dates to those projects. See Macy’s 2021 corporate announcement for the company’s historical account and its later renewal proposal.
#1 Best Overall
A store that remains a store
The Herald Square location has departments including apparel, shoes, jewelry, housewares and gifts, as well as restaurants such as Stella 34 Trattoria. If shopping or dining is part of your plan, consult the live directory for current offerings and floor locations; the full store can take longer to explore than a brief landmark stop.
Does Macy’s offer tours?
Yes. Macy’s currently describes free history tours lasting 30 to 45 minutes. The visitor center is on the Mezzanine, and Macy’s lists a 10% Visitor Savings Pass for tour participants. Contact the store to confirm tour scheduling and the pass’s current terms before planning around either.

How should you plan a visit?
Choose the visit length according to what you want to do:
- Quick history or architecture stop: Allow at least the listed 30–45 minutes for the tour, plus time to arrive and orient yourself.
- Shopping visit: Add time for the departments you want to browse; check the current directory to identify floors and services.
- Shopping and a meal: Allow additional time for dining, and verify restaurant availability and hours separately.
There is no single visit duration that fits every itinerary: a tour is a defined short activity, while shopping and dining depend on your plans.

What to know about Macy’s and the Thanksgiving Day Parade
The parade’s finish at Herald Square is central to the store’s public identity, but visiting the store and watching the parade are separate experiences. In its announcement for the 99th parade, held November 27, 2025, Macy’s described an 8:30 a.m. start and a 2.5-mile route from 77th Street to Herald Square. Those are 2025 details, not a forecast for the next parade. For the 2026 date, route, viewing rules and safety instructions, check the official Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade page when those details are published.
Macy’s 2025 announcement said designated public viewing areas were managed by the NYPD, access could include security searches, and spectators should avoid large bags, umbrellas, backpacks and strollers. These instructions applied to the 2025 event only; follow the guidance issued for the year you attend.

What holiday experiences does Macy’s promote for 2026?
Macy’s current holiday hub promotes a 100th Parade Shop and a redesigned Santaland for 2026. The hub says Santaland reservations open at 6:30 a.m. local time up to seven days in advance. Dates, reservation rules and availability may change, so check the Macy’s holiday hub before making plans.
Think of these as distinct options: a regular store visit, a reserved Santaland experience, parade-day street viewing and shopping at the Parade Shop each involve different schedules and access arrangements. Parade merchandise is optional; it is not required to visit the store or take a tour.

What about the proposed Herald Square redevelopment?
In 2021 Macy’s announced a renewal concept that included a proposed tower above the flagship and transit and public-realm improvements, subject to city land-use review. The announcement does not establish whether those proposed features have since been completed, so do not assume the tower or planned improvements are available to visitors. Macy’s then-chairman and CEO Jeff Gennette described the plan as a commitment to reinvest in the flagship and neighborhood; that was a company executive’s statement about the proposal, not independent confirmation of its outcomes.
