Mac Adoption Is Expanding in U.S. Enterprises—but Not in One Uniform Way

Macs are spreading across enterprise endpoints, development, testing and selected AI workloads—but a vendor-sponsored CIO survey is a trend signal, not a national census.

Apple’s enterprise footprint appears to be growing across employee devices, software development, cloud-hosted Mac capacity and selected AI workloads. The clearest evidence is a MacStadium-sponsored survey of 300 U.S. enterprise CIOs—not an independent count of company hardware or spending—so the results support a trend, not a claim that every enterprise is going Mac-first.

What the survey says about enterprise Mac adoption

MacStadium commissioned Censuswide to survey 300 CIOs at U.S. enterprise organizations in August 2025. In the survey, 59% said Apple-device use had increased significantly over the previous two years and 34% said it had increased somewhat. A further 95% expected Mac investment to grow over the next 12–24 months. Those are reported experiences and intentions, not audited purchasing or shipment data. The survey’s published methodology does not establish that respondents represent all U.S. enterprises, and its population already had Apple deployments.

The underlying report says Apple devices averaged 63% of endpoints at respondents’ organizations. Computerworld reported 65%, while MacStadium’s press release used 96% for expected investment growth; the PDF reports 95%. The PDF is the basis for the figures here. The difference illustrates why these results should be read as a vendor-sponsored snapshot rather than a national benchmark. Read the survey report; Computerworld’s September 25, 2025 coverage.

Other responses suggest Apple is becoming strategically significant for many surveyed organizations: 22% called Apple technologies mission-critical, 71% called them very important, and 6% somewhat important. Forty-five percent said leadership viewed Mac infrastructure as a strategic investment, while 28% said it was necessary for specific teams. This is evidence of executive attention, not proof of a uniform enterprise policy.

Adoption means more than issuing employees Macs

The survey spans several distinct uses, with different budgets and operational needs. Among surveyed organizations using Macs, the reported roles included executive and leadership teams (64%), software development (61%), QA and testing (47%), creative and design (39%), security (24%), customer support (22%), general employees (21%), and sales and marketing (21%). These categories are not mutually exclusive.

Infrastructure use is a separate layer from employee endpoint adoption. Respondents reported using Macs for AI processing (73%), iOS and macOS application development (68%), build, test and deployment (61%), remote desktops (51%), edge computing (46%), file servers (46%), and spatial computing (31%). The survey does not show that every organization uses Macs for all these jobs, or that Mac infrastructure is replacing conventional servers. It does show why enterprise Mac strategy now reaches beyond laptop procurement.

Why organizations say they are adding Apple devices

Respondents identified several overlapping reasons rather than a single driver. Security and privacy and employee preference or satisfaction each received 59%; hardware performance and reliability received 54%; Apple-specific technical capabilities, 53%; and developer requirements such as iOS development and Unix tooling, 52%. Executive mandates and seamless integration among Apple devices each registered 48%. Better return on investment or total cost of ownership was cited by 45%, and easier support by 41%.

These are CIO-reported reasons, not independently tested comparisons of security, cost or reliability. For a finance or IT team assessing a rollout, the useful question is whether the benefits apply to its own users and workloads. A Mac selected for iOS development, for example, addresses a different requirement from a broad replacement of employees’ existing PCs.

AI is a use case, not proof Macs replace GPU clusters

AI processing was the most commonly reported Mac workload in the survey, ahead of Apple-platform development. Apple silicon can be relevant where a team values local or private processing, energy efficiency, hardware-software integration or inference near an edge location. That makes Macs one option to assess for selected enterprise AI tasks.

The survey does not specify model sizes, throughput, utilization, or the share of AI work done on Macs. It therefore cannot establish that Macs are displacing GPU infrastructure for large-scale model training. Before choosing hardware, organizations need to test whether their model and software stack support Apple silicon and whether memory capacity, inference performance, privacy controls and total operating cost fit the workload.

Manageability is not the same as frictionless operations

In the survey, 65% of CIOs said macOS was easier to manage than Windows or Linux, 31% said it was about the same, and 4% said it was harder. Yet roughly nine in ten also reported management issues. The most common were security and compliance gaps (36%), integration with existing software (34%), user adoption and support (25%), cost justification (24%), and limited enterprise support (23%).

Those findings can coexist: teams may find routine endpoint management comparatively straightforward while still struggling to fit Macs into existing identity, compliance, application, monitoring and support systems. An organization should assess the whole operating model—not just whether its device-management console can enroll a Mac.

What MacOps covers—and what the term does not mean

MacStadium uses “MacOps” for a DevOps-style approach to managing Apple fleets and Mac infrastructure. It is a useful label for work that otherwise risks being split among endpoint teams, developers and data-center operations, but it is MacStadium’s framing rather than a universally standardized enterprise discipline.

In practice, the scope can include endpoint provisioning and policy, application deployment and patching, identity and access, CI/CD runners, test-device orchestration, remote desktops, cloud or on-premises capacity, security, monitoring, networking and cost control. Mobile device management (MDM) can handle important device policies, but it does not by itself schedule build jobs, operate remote workstations or govern the cost and utilization of Mac infrastructure.

Cloud-hosted Macs broaden access to Apple hardware

The survey reports that 77% of respondents used cloud-hosted Apple infrastructure extensively, 20% used it for limited cases, and 3% were evaluating it. The report groups providers such as AWS and MacStadium; these figures do not show MacStadium’s market share. They indicate that, among this survey’s Apple-using organizations, access to Mac capacity is often treated as an infrastructure choice as well as a hardware-purchasing decision.

MacStadium documents hosted, AWS-based and on-premises deployment models. Its Orka platform is described as a Kubernetes-native control plane for macOS virtual machines, with CI integrations and deployment across those environments. Virtualization still has to respect Apple’s licensing and hardware constraints; it should not be assumed to provide unlimited VM density. MacStadium’s deployment overview.

What customer examples show—and do not show

MacStadium’s customer page describes a range of uses: Lloyds Banking Group used Orka to scale iOS development and reportedly cut build times by three times; ING reported a 50% acceleration in its macOS CI/CD pipeline; Thumbtack reported a 50% reduction in macOS build times; Jitterbit uses Orka on AWS EC2 Macs for macOS QA; and St. Clair College built a virtual Mac lab with 30 Mac minis. These are vendor-published customer claims. They illustrate deployment patterns, but they are not independent performance benchmarks or a guarantee of similar results elsewhere. How to choose a Mac strategy

Start with the workload and operating constraints, then compare the operating model. The right choice for a persistent development machine may not be right for bursty CI jobs or a team that only needs Apple-managed builds.

Option Best fit Key trade-off to assess
Hosted Mac infrastructure Teams needing dedicated Apple hardware quickly, variable build or test capacity, remote access, or a proof of concept without operating a data center. Compare recurring charges with utilization, support, data location, network design and hardware availability. Avoid paying for idle runners.
AWS EC2 Mac Workloads already governed and networked in AWS, especially where keeping Mac compute near other AWS services matters. Model the full AWS cost and operational setup, including how existing commitments affect economics. AWS EC2 Mac.
Self-hosted Macs Predictable, sustained utilization; existing hardware and facilities; or requirements favoring local control, physical access or specialized test devices. Include procurement, maintenance, replacement cycles, staffing, capacity planning and the cost of underused machines.
Apple Xcode Cloud Teams whose main need is Apple-platform build and test and who prefer an Apple-managed CI service. It is a narrower fit than general-purpose Mac infrastructure when teams need custom operating-system access, arbitrary tooling or persistent remote desktops. Apple Xcode Cloud.
Remote Mac desktops Distributed users who need interactive macOS access from non-Mac devices, with centralized data or reduced hardware shipping. Test latency, graphics performance, identity integration, data controls and support before broad rollout.
Endpoint-only Mac rollout Organizations whose need is employee laptops rather than hosted build, test or desktop capacity. Evaluate MDM, application compatibility, support coverage, compliance and lifecycle management without assuming a cloud-Mac platform is required.

For CI/CD, compare cost per successful build, queue time, concurrency and maintenance burden—not only the monthly price of a machine. For remote desktops, validate interactive performance and security controls with real users. For AI, run representative workloads and confirm compatibility before committing capacity.

What could slow enterprise adoption

  • Integration and compliance: Existing controls and business software may be optimized for another platform, leaving gaps that require new tooling or processes.
  • Cost and utilization: Dedicated Apple hardware can be expensive if build runners or remote machines sit idle; compare lifecycle and support costs, not just acquisition price.
  • Specialized operations: Scaling fleets, test devices and CI capacity requires ownership across endpoint, developer and infrastructure teams.
  • Hardware and capacity: Deployment timelines depend on available machines and the provider’s inventory, so confirm lead times for the required configurations.
  • Workload fit: Macs are not automatically the best platform for every server, AI or desktop use case. Performance, software compatibility and operational requirements should determine the choice.

What the evidence supports

The survey indicates that Apple devices and Mac infrastructure are gaining attention among the U.S. enterprise CIOs it sampled, and that use extends from employee endpoints to development, testing, cloud capacity and selected AI workloads. It does not establish a national adoption rate, independent spending growth or a broad shift to Mac-first computing. The defensible takeaway is narrower: for organizations already using Apple, Macs are increasingly being considered as managed enterprise infrastructure, not merely as employee-preference exceptions.
