Lyten’s headline financing was a $200 million oversubscribed Series B equity round announced September 12, 2023. Prime Movers Lab led the round, with Stellantis, FedEx, Honeywell and Walbridge participating. Lyten said the money would fund automated pilot production and commercialization of lithium-sulfur batteries, graphene-infused composites and sensors. The round took the company’s reported cumulative equity investment to more than $410 million.
The “latest EV battery startup” wording described the news cycle in 2023, not the state of the market in 2026. Since then, Lyten has reported more than $625 million in equity investment, announced a planned Nevada gigafactory, received a $4 million U.S. Department of Energy grant, and acquired Northvolt’s Swedish assets. Those developments increase its industrial footprint, but they do not by themselves prove that Lyten has solved lithium-sulfur durability, cost or automotive-scale manufacturing.
The September 2023 financing
Lyten announced the Series B on September 12, 2023, describing it as oversubscribed. Prime Movers Lab was the lead investor. Strategic participants were Stellantis, FedEx, Honeywell and Walbridge. Lyten said the financing would support:
- Automated pilot-line production;
- Commercialization of its lithium-sulfur battery platform;
- Lightweight, graphene-infused composites; and
- Next-generation Internet of Things sensors.
That mix matters: this was not an EV-cell-only raise. Lyten presented itself as an advanced-materials company serving automotive, aerospace, defense, space and energy-storage markets. Its financing announcement is available from Lyten.

Lyten said it was targeting commercial battery deliveries from an automated San Jose pilot line in early 2024 for early customers seeking higher energy density and cells without nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) cathodes or graphite. That was forward-looking guidance in 2023; the announcement does not establish that every delivery target was met on schedule.
Why investors saw potential in lithium-sulfur
Most high-energy lithium-ion batteries rely on combinations of nickel, manganese, cobalt and graphite. Lyten’s lithium-sulfur approach substitutes sulfur-based cathode chemistry and aims to reduce dependence on those materials. Sulfur is widely available and could reduce exposure to some constrained or geopolitically sensitive supply chains.
Lyten and Stellantis said the chemistry had the potential to deliver more than twice the energy density of lithium-ion cells. That is a company and strategic-investor claim, not evidence that a production Lyten battery pack already delivers more than twice the energy of a commercial EV pack. Lyten’s 2021 LytCell EV announcement described a design target of three times the gravimetric energy density of conventional lithium-ion batteries; it should likewise be read as a target, not independently verified vehicle performance. See Lyten’s platform announcement and Stellantis’ investment announcement.

What Lyten says it is building
Lithium-sulfur cells and LytCell
Lyten combines lithium-sulfur chemistry with a proprietary material it calls 3D Graphene. The company says this architecture is intended to improve conductivity and control the reactions that have historically limited sulfur batteries. Its battery products are branded LytCell.

The Series B supported three related businesses: LytCell batteries, lightweight composites and sensors. Consequently, the $200 million cannot be treated as $200 million earmarked solely for EV battery factories or vehicle programs.
The technical hurdle: energy density is only one metric
Lithium-sulfur batteries have a long-standing degradation problem. Sulfur is electrically insulating, expands and contracts during cycling, and can form soluble polysulfides. Those polysulfides migrate between electrodes in a “shuttle” effect, consuming active material and shortening cycle life. Lithium-metal anodes add further safety and durability challenges.

The U.S. government’s SBIR profile for Lyten identifies polysulfide dissolution as a problem that can severely limit lithium-sulfur cycle life (SBIR profile). A credible automotive assessment therefore needs more than a headline specific-energy number. The relevant progression is:
- Theoretical or laboratory potential: what the chemistry could deliver under controlled conditions.
- Prototype cell data: measured performance from a particular design and test protocol.
- Automotive qualification: repeatable results across temperature, power and abuse tests.
- Pack and warranty performance: usable energy, volumetric density, safety, degradation and cost in a production vehicle.
Funding is evidence that investors are willing to finance the work; it is not proof that these stages have been completed.
Why Stellantis invested
Stellantis invested through Stellantis Ventures in May 2023 to accelerate Lyten applications for lithium-sulfur EV batteries, lightweighting composites and onboard sensing. The automaker’s participation can provide development expertise, validation requirements and a potential route to customers. It is not, by itself, a binding commitment to install Lyten cells in mass-production vehicles. Stellantis’ description of more-than-double energy-density potential also remains an attributed technology claim.

How the round compared with other battery financings
Dollar totals are useful context only when the businesses and technologies are separated. Contemporary coverage cited the following financings:
| Company and financing | Business or chemistry | Why it is not a direct comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Lyten — $200 million Series B (2023) | Lithium-sulfur cells, composites and sensors | Cell and materials platform at pilot/commercialization stage |
| Ascend Elements — $542 million Series D | Recycled battery materials and cathode production | Materials and recycling, not a lithium-sulfur cell startup |
| Redwood Materials — more than $1 billion Series D | Battery recycling, critical materials and energy storage | Integrated materials business rather than comparable cell financing |
| Redwood Materials — $425 million Series E final close (January 2026) | Energy storage and recycling scale-up | Later-stage materials and storage expansion; see Redwood |
| Factorial — more than $100 million gross proceeds (2026 transaction) | Solid-state batteries | Different chemistry; transaction implied approximately $1.3 billion equity value, according to its SEC filing |
The original 2023 comparison was reported by TechCrunch. Comparing only the largest check can obscure whether capital is funding a pilot line, a recycling plant, a materials factory or a commercial cell program.

By 2025, Lyten reported more than $625 million in equity investment. It also reported letters of interest for up to $650 million of Export-Import Bank financing. A letter of interest is not a closed loan or disbursed debt. In July 2025, Lyten separately announced more than $200 million of additional investment to support its acquisition strategy (announcement). Because the company’s cumulative figures and later financing announcements may use different closing definitions, the safer statement is Lyten’s reported “more than $625 million” in equity rather than mechanically adding every headline number.
Nevada gigafactory plan
In October 2024, Lyten announced plans to invest more than $1 billion in a Nevada lithium-sulfur gigafactory (plan announcement). It was a proposed facility, not evidence of an operating plant or completed project financing.
Northvolt assets and the Swedish industrial hub
Lyten announced plans to acquire Northvolt assets in Sweden, Germany and Poland, related intellectual property and infrastructure, as well as the former Cuberg facility in San Leandro, California. Lyten’s acquisition page describes 16 GWh of operational capacity, 15 GWh under construction and infrastructure that could eventually scale beyond 100 GWh (Lyten’s overview). Those are asset-level figures, not Lyten’s current lithium-sulfur production capacity. Existing lithium-ion equipment does not automatically become a lithium-sulfur production line.
On February 27, 2026, Lyten announced completion of its acquisition of Northvolt’s Swedish assets, including the Ett manufacturing site and Northvolt Labs. Lyten described the assets as representing nearly $5 billion in original value and including 16 GWh of existing manufacturing capacity (announcement). “Nearly $5 billion” is an original asset-value description, not the amount Lyten raised or necessarily paid. Northvolt’s transaction announcement is available at Northvolt.

- Cycle life: retention over hundreds or thousands of automotive cycles.
- Specific versus volumetric energy: a weight advantage may disappear when pack volume and structure are included.
- Power and charging: EVs require sustained output and acceptable fast-charging performance.
- Safety: lithium-metal cells must pass abuse, crash, thermal-runaway and transport testing.
- Manufacturing yield: pilot-line success does not establish economical gigawatt-hour production.
- Consistency and sourcing: sulfur, carbon materials, electrolytes, separators and lithium metal must be processed repeatably.
- Warranty durability: automakers need predictable degradation over the warranty period.
- Customer validation: paid qualification, production contracts or road-going vehicles are stronger evidence than strategic investment alone.
- Capital and integration: building a gigafactory and restarting acquired facilities require substantial additional funding and execution.
The Bottom Line
Lyten’s $200 million Series B was a meaningful vote of confidence in lithium-sulfur batteries, not proof that the chemistry was ready for mass-market EVs. The decisive evidence will be production-grade cell data, repeatable manufacturing, customer qualification and deployment in vehicles or other demanding applications. Its later capital raises and Northvolt acquisitions expand the opportunity—and the execution risk.
