The figures exclude vehicle expenses, and local demand, unpaid time, incentives, benefit eligibility, and driving costs can change the result. Compare both apps using your own shifts and total time online—not just trip or “active” hours.
Which app pays drivers more?
In Gridwise’s comparison of tracked drivers using 2025 data, Uber’s median total trip pay was $21.18 per work hour, compared with $19.48 for Lyft. Gridwise reported the figures in 2026. These are gross medians before vehicle expenses, not guaranteed wages or predictions for any one driver. The samples and metric definitions are Gridwise’s, so the comparison does not establish which app pays better in every city or schedule. See Gridwise’s Lyft driver pay analysis and Uber driver pay analysis.
Gridwise also reported 2025 gross median figures including bonuses and promotions of $20.38 per hour for Lyft and $21.92 for Uber. Those amounts remain before vehicle costs; they are not take-home pay. The figures can move as rider prices, fee shares, trip mix, and driver gross pay change. Gridwise’s Q2 2026 rideshare report illustrates that these market factors vary over time.
Why gross pay is not take-home pay
A gross hourly figure may not account for fuel, maintenance, depreciation, insurance, vehicle financing or rental, taxes, or unpaid time spent waiting and repositioning. A driver whose trips are concentrated in a short busy window may also have a different result from one who stays online through slow periods. Do not treat an active-, booked-, or trip-hour amount as an hourly wage for every hour you make yourself available.

Time definitions matter particularly when reading state earnings floors. Uber’s California Proposition 22 page excludes online waiting from “active time”; Lyft’s California page defines “booked time” from accepting a request until passenger drop-off. Neither measure necessarily covers all time a driver spends working or waiting.
How earnings floors and upfront offers compare
California shows why platform pay protections need to be read alongside their definitions. Lyft describes a floor of 120% of minimum wage for booked time plus $0.37 per booked mile while booked with a passenger. Uber describes 120% of the applicable minimum wage for active time plus $0.37 per vehicle mile, with eligible earnings assessed over two weeks and a top-up if they fall below the floor. Uber’s active-time period runs from request acceptance through completion and excludes online waiting. These are California-specific descriptions, not nationwide pay promises. See Lyft’s California driver information and Uber’s California Proposition 22 FAQ.
Lyft says its drivers may see a route and total earnings before accepting an upfront offer, along with an estimated hourly rate. Lyft explicitly says that estimated rate is not a guarantee of actual hourly earnings. Its driver pay page also says that if total Lyft fees from all rides exceed 30% at month end, it makes an earnings adjustment. Read the applicable terms rather than assuming this is a guaranteed 70% share of earnings: Lyft driver earnings information.

Which app offers more flexibility?
Lyft’s California driver page says, “When you drive with Lyft, you call the shots. Need flexibility? Drive whenever (and wherever) you want.” That is Lyft’s description of its service, not evidence that it provides more useful flexibility than Uber for every driver. The available platform information does not establish a universal winner for schedule choice, offer frequency, or acceptance constraints.
In practice, flexibility depends on whether rides are available where and when you can drive, how offers fit your route and schedule, and which local incentives or app controls matter to you. Check the current features and terms in both apps—especially if you rely on destination settings, pausing requests, or a particular type of ride—rather than assuming they work identically in every market.
Benefits vary by state and eligibility
Benefits are not a single nationwide package. The following examples show how eligibility, covered time, and benefit types differ. Check the current local terms before relying on a rate or threshold; platform policies and state rules can change.

California
Lyft’s California page describes a minimum earnings calculation of 120% of minimum wage for booked time plus $0.37 per booked mile. It says a driver may qualify for a healthcare subsidy by averaging at least 15 booked hours per week in a calendar quarter and submitting proof of qualifying health insurance. The page also describes occupational accident insurance for on-the-job injuries.
Uber’s California FAQ describes a floor of 120% of the applicable minimum wage for active time plus $0.37 per vehicle mile, with eligible earnings calculated over two weeks. It says a healthcare stipend requires at least 15 active hours per week in the quarter and qualifying health insurance, and describes injury protection for injuries while online. Uber also notes that some top-ups, stipends, and insurance-premium values may be reported as taxable income. The booked- and active-time thresholds are not interchangeable.
Massachusetts
Uber’s Massachusetts help page describes a state-specific minimum earnings rate and a two-week calculation. It also lists paid sick leave accruing at one hour per 30 hours of active time, up to 40 hours annually; occupational accident insurance for qualifying Massachusetts rides during online, waiting, pickup, and trip periods; and a portable health fund. For that fund, the page says drivers averaging at least 15 hours weekly in a quarter can qualify for a half stipend and those averaging at least 25 hours for a full stipend. Qualifying time on other rideshare platforms can be combined for the health fund. The page also describes a family medical leave payment. Because the current rate and operative terms can change, verify them on Uber’s Massachusetts driver benefits page. Uber’s announcement about the Massachusetts driver agreement says the fund began in 2025, but the help page is the more useful source for current terms.

New York State
Lyft’s New York State guide distinguishes trips outside New York City from trips covered by NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission minimum-pay rules. It reports a non-NYC minimum updated as of March 2026 and describes paid sick and safe leave accrual of one hour for each 30 hours of rides, with an annual accrual cap. The guide also says Express Drive rentals are available in select cities and lists driver, vehicle, document, and smartphone requirements. Because the rate is geography- and date-specific, check the current guide rather than applying it to NYC or to another state: Lyft’s New York State driver guide.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Insurance and vehicle costs can change the decision
Platform coverage and personal auto insurance are separate issues. Lyft’s insurance overview describes coverage by trip phase and jurisdictional exceptions. For example, its contingent comprehensive and collision coverage applies only if the driver also has comprehensive and collision coverage on a personal policy; it is limited to the car’s actual cash value and has a $2,500 deductible. Review Lyft’s insurance overview and confirm your own insurer’s rideshare terms. Do not assume occupational accident or platform coverage replaces a personal auto policy.
A qualifying vehicle—or the cost of obtaining one—also matters. Lyft’s New York guide documents Express Drive rentals in select cities, but availability and rental economics vary. Compare any rental cost and terms with the costs of using your own car before deciding whether the associated platform earnings make sense.
How to compare Lyft and Uber on your own schedule
If both apps are available to you, an apples-to-apples comparison is more useful than applying a national median to your situation. Track comparable shifts and account for the time and costs that gross trip figures leave out.
Quick Recap
- Use comparable windows. Try both platforms on the same local days and hours where possible, and record all time online, including waiting—not just booked, active, or trip time.
- Log earnings components. Record gross fares, tips, promotions, eligible top-ups, completed trips, and total miles. Include repositioning miles where you can.
- Subtract your costs. Account for fuel, maintenance, depreciation, insurance, financing or rental, and applicable taxes before comparing what you keep.
- Check benefit rules. Confirm the state-specific earning-floor calculation, which time and miles count, and the hours, insurance, or other eligibility conditions for health, leave, and injury benefits.
- Judge the fit, not just the headline rate. Consider whether ride offers and incentives are reliable for your actual schedule, whether the vehicle requirements suit you, and whether you can evaluate offers before accepting.
