Lumen Technologies is trying to move beyond its legacy identity as a telephone and connectivity carrier. In July 2025, CEO Kate Johnson presented a Lumen Connected Ecosystem built around programmable networking, cloud and data-center links, and technology partners that can embed or sell Lumen services. The strategy is a credible enterprise-platform pivot, but it remains a work in progress rather than a finished cloud marketplace.
What Lumen is changing
“Not your mama’s Lumen” is management’s shorthand for an intended shift from selling individual circuits to providing a digital platform for enterprise connectivity. Lumen remains a telecom and network-infrastructure company; the new positioning describes how it wants customers to buy and use those assets.
| Traditional carrier model | Proposed Lumen model |
|---|---|
| Separate services and infrastructure | One fabric port supporting multiple services |
| Network purchased independently | Network integrated into technology offerings |
| Manual or contract-heavy provisioning | Digital, API-oriented activation |
| Carrier-controlled portfolio | First- and third-party ecosystem |
| Mostly on-net reach | Cross-carrier and off-net reach |
| Connectivity as the product | Connectivity as a platform for cloud, AI, security and data |
The original July 31, 2025 report described a strategy and roadmap, not universal availability of every partner service in a single marketplace. Lumen’s positioning and partner claims are reported in CRN.
How the connected ecosystem is supposed to work
1. Physical network
Lumen supplies fiber, transport, data-center interconnections, hyperscaler connections and planned capacity upgrades. It said its infrastructure reaches more than 1,500 U.S. data centers and that the three largest cloud providers are connected to it; both are company statements.

2. Digital fabric
Lumen Connectivity Fabric is the software-controlled layer for consuming and managing connectivity, infrastructure, security and communications. The central idea is one digital port that can support several services instead of separate physical arrangements for each one. The platform description is based on Lumen’s reported materials, not an independent technical test.
3. Partner ecosystem
Lumen wants technology companies to integrate its networking into their products, sell Lumen services alongside their own offerings, or use Lumen as a “sell-with” or “sell-through” channel. The strongest customer promise is a common purchasing and provisioning experience for network, cloud, security, data and communications services. That experience was still partly aspirational in the 2025 coverage.
Why AI and “Cloud 2.0” matter
Lumen’s thesis is that AI workloads need more than access to a hyperscaler. Training and inference can require high bandwidth, low latency, dense data-center interconnection, direct access to multiple clouds and AI platforms, and network APIs that can be programmed as workloads move.

Johnson has framed Lumen’s fiber and digital platform as infrastructure for AI training, inference, multicloud applications and future machine-to-machine traffic. Lumen is not presenting itself as an AI-model provider; it is selling or orchestrating the connectivity and related services around those workloads. Project Berkeley and the click-to-provision vision
Project Berkeley was described in the Q3 2025 call as a planned, pre-provisioned cross-carrier fabric port. The proposed device would let a customer connect services across carriers and access types, then order internet, voice, security, VPN and cloud on-ramps through Lumen’s digital platform.
Lumen described Berkeley as an early-2026 go-to-market initiative and acknowledged that parts of the concept still required implementation. Without a newer confirmation, it should not be treated as universally deployed or as proof that every carrier and partner service can be managed from one screen.

Lumen’s enterprise pivot is occurring alongside its plan to sell its 11-state mass-market fiber-to-the-home business to AT&T for $5.75 billion in cash, according to the 2025 report. The proposed transaction covered approximately 95% of Quantum Fiber, roughly 4 million fiber locations and about 1 million subscribers.
The report expected closing in the first half of 2026. That was a forecast at the time, not confirmation that the transaction closed. Strategically, the sale would reduce Lumen’s consumer exposure and sharpen its focus on enterprise networking and infrastructure.

Is this transformation or rebranding?
Reasons to view it as a real pivot
- Investment in fiber capacity, data-center connectivity and network modernization.
- Movement toward programmable, API-oriented services.
- Partner distribution rather than reliance only on Lumen’s direct sales force.
- Reported growth in NaaS customers, ports and services sold.
- A clearer separation between enterprise infrastructure and consumer fiber.
Reasons for caution
- Legacy telecom revenue remains under pressure.
- Several important ecosystem features were future plans in the reported period.
- Partner participation does not establish deep integration or material revenue.
- Deal value and bookings do not equal immediate recognized revenue.
- A marketplace adds billing, support, security, certification and partner-governance complexity.
The most accurate description is an enterprise-platform pivot in progress. Its credibility will depend on converting network scale and partner relationships into repeatable digital revenue and a better customer workflow.
Questions enterprise buyers should ask
- Are required locations on-net, or will off-net access involve another carrier or local-loop provider?
- Which services can actually be ordered, activated, monitored, changed and trouble-ticketed through the platform?
- Are APIs documented, production-ready and compatible with existing orchestration tools?
- Who owns an incident when a bundled connection, security service or cloud on-ramp fails?
- What service-level agreements, latency targets and performance remedies apply across provider boundaries?
- How are pricing, usage, taxes and partner charges shown on the bill?
- Can the customer move a service or port to another carrier or partner later?
- Does the bundled model beat direct procurement from a hyperscaler, interconnection provider, security specialist or managed-WAN supplier?
What investors should monitor
- Digital-services growth compared with declines in legacy services.
- Conversion of Private Connectivity Fabric deal value into recognized revenue.
- NaaS retention and the number of services attached to each customer port.
- Gross-margin and capital-intensity effects of new capacity and partner operations.
- Partner-sourced revenue and the depth of integrations.
- Execution of Project Berkeley and off-net expansion.
- Balance-sheet effects and final status of the consumer-fiber divestiture.
Bottom line
Lumen is attempting to make connectivity behave more like a programmable enterprise platform: one physical and digital fabric, multiple services, and partners that can sell or embed those capabilities. The AI opportunity gives the strategy a plausible demand story, while NaaS adoption and port growth provide early company-reported evidence. But the ecosystem was not yet a universally available marketplace in the 2025 account. Buyers should verify product availability, integration depth, pricing and support ownership; investors should distinguish deal value and projections from recognized revenue. Lumen’s reinvention is credible enough to test, but not complete enough to take on faith.
