That is a change in how reduced hours are arranged—not a return to a conventional five-day schedule. The available reporting does not establish whether the trial improved the company’s finances, productivity, retention, or employee wellbeing.
What changed at Lumen SEO?
In a 2025 post, Lumen SEO founder Aled Nelmes described a three-month trial in which team members would work 32 hours each week “at any time and from anywhere.” Indian Defence Review reported the same core policy in October 2025: no set workdays or hours, and no requirement to work from a particular location.
Nelmes framed the shift as extending flexibility to employees, rather than reserving control over working time for entrepreneurs. He cited circumstances and preferences such as menstrual health, childcare, personal energy rhythms, and making use of good weather without having to book leave. Those are his stated reasons for the policy, not medical advice or proof that the arrangement produced particular outcomes.
The phrase “abandoning the four-day week” can therefore be misleading without the details: the company reportedly moved away from fixed four-day scheduling, but retained a 32-hour weekly target.

What is known—and not known—about the rules
Flexible timing gives employees more say over when they distribute their hours. Nelmes’s post offers examples such as working late at night or spreading a week across six shorter days, but those examples are rhetorical illustrations, not documented requirements.
The reporting says the company used collaborative tools and optional check-ins, and that it focused on output rather than screen time. It does not specify whether employees had to keep common overlap hours, how client deadlines were covered, how workloads were capped, or how the company assessed performance. Those details matter: a nominal 32-hour week is easier to sustain when coordination expectations and workload boundaries are clear, but the sources do not establish what Lumen SEO put in place.

Is the flexible week “paying off”?
The company-specific evidence does not substantiate the headline’s claim of big returns. The reviewed accounts provide no Lumen SEO figures for revenue, output, retention, or employee wellbeing, and no documented employee survey. Nelmes’s post describes why he wanted the change; the secondary report’s account of the policy and its emphasis on output are not measured proof of its effects.
A broader comparison offers context but cannot fill that gap. 4 Day Week Global’s summary of its six-month UK pilot, which began in 2022, says that 92% of participating businesses planned to continue the four-day-week model. That is an aggregate figure reported by the pilot’s organizer for its participating businesses in 2023; it is not a result for Lumen SEO and does not test this company’s later, more flexible 32-hour arrangement.
