Lululemon’s Seattle Tech Center: Why It Expanded Beyond Vancouver

Lululemon opened a permanent Seattle technology center in 2018 to build digital, cloud and data capabilities alongside its Vancouver headquarters. Current listings confirm a Seattle presence, but not the office’s current size.

Lululemon’s 2018 Seattle expansion was a technology-hiring move, not a headquarters relocation. The Vancouver-based retailer established a permanent downtown office to grow digital commerce, cloud engineering and data capabilities alongside its Canadian headquarters. The original report described Seattle and Vancouver as “sister city” technology organizations; current company and recruiting information still points to a Seattle presence, but does not establish its present headcount or exact size.

What lululemon announced in 2018

In a report published April 5, 2018, GeekWire said lululemon had leased a full floor at Second & Seneca in downtown Seattle the previous month. The office could accommodate about 300 people. At the time of the report, it had approximately 50 employees, and the company’s stated goal was to reach roughly 100 by the end of 2018. Capacity and hiring targets are not evidence that those headcounts were ultimately reached. GeekWire’s 2018 account contains the announcement and its historical figures.

Why Seattle, and who was building the team?

Lululemon was seeking access to Seattle’s established technology talent pool as it worked to strengthen its digital and ecommerce operations. The expansion was led in part by Julie Averill, who joined the company from REI as executive vice president and chief technology officer and was described as its first Seattle employee. The report also identified Justin Richmond, then chief strategy and digital officer, whose background included Expedia and Zulily. Their experience connected the hiring effort to the region’s retail and technology ecosystem.

The choice of Seattle was therefore practical as well as geographic: it gave the retailer another place to recruit engineers and digital specialists while preserving its Vancouver base. The contemporaneous report framed the office as a place for technology and digital development, not as a new consumer-facing store or a move of corporate headquarters.

What the Seattle technology team was meant to do

GeekWire reported that most of lululemon’s digital team, cloud engineering and technology leadership would be based in Seattle. The office was also tied to a global data and analytics platform and to work connecting stores with online retail. These functions addressed a common retail problem: customers want to move between online and in-store shopping without losing access to products, inventory information or a convenient way to receive an order.

  • Buy online, pick up in store: Link an online order to a physical store for pickup.
  • “Endless aisle”: Help a store meet demand by drawing on online inventory when an item is not available on the sales floor.
  • Inventory visibility: Use RFID-tagged products to improve the retailer’s view of where merchandise is available.
  • Digital commerce and personalization: Improve the website and use a more unified view of customer and transaction information to support tailored experiences.
  • Cloud and data infrastructure: The 2018 report named Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure as platforms in the company’s cloud plans, and described work to bring transaction and inventory information together for analysis.

These were examples of omnichannel retail technology: systems intended to make store and online operations work together. They were not separate products lululemon was claiming to have invented. The cloud providers and projects above describe the 2018 strategy; they should not be read as confirmation of lululemon’s current infrastructure or project status.

How Seattle fit with Vancouver

Vancouver remained lululemon’s corporate headquarters. In 2018, CTO Averill characterized Vancouver and Seattle as “sister” technology organizations: connected teams across the border, rather than competing headquarters. The model gave lululemon a way to recruit in Seattle while retaining its Canadian corporate base. The company’s LinkedIn company profile lists Vancouver as headquarters, and a 2026 SEC filing index shows a Vancouver corporate address.

A two-city organization also creates management work. Teams need clear ownership of architecture, product decisions and infrastructure, as well as reliable coordination across locations. Hiring in both the United States and Canada can involve different employment, payroll, tax and immigration requirements. The 2018 “sister city” description expressed an intended partnership; it did not spell out a detailed division of authority between the offices.

The growth targets were historical plans, not current results

The Seattle investment formed part of a broader growth agenda. GeekWire reported that lululemon had generated about $2.6 billion in revenue in 2017 and had set a goal of a $1 billion digital business and $4 billion in company revenue by 2020. Those were targets reported in 2018, not verified outcomes or current forecasts. The available figures do not establish how much revenue the Seattle team later generated or how its technology work affected sales.

What can be verified about Seattle now

Current signals support the conclusion that lululemon continues to have a Seattle presence, though they do not establish the office’s current headcount, floor count or working arrangements. The company profile lists 1191 2nd Avenue, Seattle, Washington 98101 as a location. Lululemon recruiting pages have also listed Seattle technology positions, including roles in cybersecurity architecture and global technology operations: Lead Architect, Cybersecurity and Business Operations Lead, Global Technology Operations. A Seattle recruiting page also lists technology-related work. Job postings show that Seattle is a recruiting location for these roles; they do not reveal the total size of the office.

CoStar later reported that lululemon leased another floor in the Second + Seneca tower, describing the move as a doubling of its downtown Seattle office footprint. That is evidence of a reported later expansion, not a complete record of present occupancy. The 2018 capacity of about 300 people likewise does not show how many employees work there today.

The company’s current leadership page identifies Ranju Das as chief AI and technology officer, with responsibility for enterprise data, technology and AI strategy. That establishes a broader current technology mandate at the company, not that Das runs the Seattle office or that its internal structure remains the same as in 2018. Lululemon’s leadership page provides the current role information.
