Authorities and news reports said officers found handwritten material with Mangione; descriptions of it as a manifesto and of its contents came from officials and reporting, not from a publicly available complete text. In August 2026, Mangione pleaded guilty to two federal stalking counts connected to Thompson’s death. The separate New York state case was reported postponed indefinitely in October 2026.
Who was arrested in the UnitedHealthcare CEO killing?
Luigi Mangione was arrested on December 9, 2024, at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania. He was arrested in connection with the December 4 killing of Brian Thompson, UnitedHealthcare’s CEO, in Manhattan. The U.S. Department of Justice said officers recovered a firearm and other evidence during the arrest. DOJ’s August 2026 account gives the later federal case status; the original federal charging announcement set out prosecutors’ account of the alleged attack and motive. That December 2024 announcement described the claim that Thompson was targeted because of his role as CEO as a prosecutorial allegation.
What was in the reported manifesto?
Reports described handwritten notes recovered at the arrest as expressing hostility toward health insurers and corporate power, but the sources cited here do not provide a complete, authenticated text for readers to examine.
What officials and news reports said
The Associated Press reported in December 2024 that a law-enforcement bulletin characterized a handwritten document found with Mangione as expressing anger at health insurers and disdain for corporate greed and power. The AP account reports the bulletin’s characterization, not a complete quotation from the document.

STAT reported that NYPD Chief of Detectives Joe Kenny called the material a three-page handwritten manifesto reflecting “ill will toward corporate America.” STAT also reported that the full document had not been released at the time. STAT’s December 9, 2024 report attributes both the label and length to Kenny.
In its October 2026 coverage of newly released body-camera footage, AP said officers recovered a journal and other handwritten notes. AP reported that prosecutors later said the journal revealed an intent to “wack” a health insurance executive. That is a description attributed to the prosecution, not a substitute for the full journal or proof that every circulating account of the writings is accurate. AP’s footage report describes the arrest and what prosecutors said about the journal.

What readers can and cannot verify
The sources above do not establish that the complete handwritten document is public. They support reporting what named officials, a law-enforcement bulletin, and prosecutors said; they do not support presenting a reconstructed text, an exact word count, or every characterization of the document as independently verified fact.
Where was Luigi Mangione arrested?
Mangione was arrested at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on December 9, 2024. AP reported that body-camera footage of the arrest was released after a judge unsealed it on October 2, 2026. The footage shows officers approaching Mangione and searching him and his belongings, according to AP.
What happened after Mangione’s federal guilty plea?
On August 14, 2026, the U.S. Department of Justice announced that Mangione pleaded guilty to two federal counts: interstate stalking resulting in death and cyberstalking through use of interstate facilities resulting in death. DOJ said sentencing was scheduled for December 18, 2026. The plea concerns the federal case; it does not by itself resolve the separate New York state murder proceeding.
In an October 2, 2026 report, AP said the New York state case had been postponed indefinitely while Mangione’s lawyers sought dismissal following the federal plea. That is a procedural update reported on that date, not a final disposition of the state case. Court schedules and motions can change.
