Amazon announced on December 2, 2022, that longtime executive Jeff Blackburn planned to retire in January 2023, less than two years after returning to lead its Global Media & Entertainment organization. The announcement also divided his portfolio between Mike Hopkins, who continued overseeing Prime Video, Amazon Studios, and MGM, and Steve Boom, who took on Audible, Twitch, and Games alongside Music and Podcasting. Amazon’s announcement described a voluntary retirement and transition, not a dismissal.

What happened when Amazon announced Blackburn’s retirement?

On December 2, 2022, Blackburn said he planned to retire from Amazon in January 2023. He also said he wanted to spend more time with his family. CEO Andy Jassy said Blackburn would remain through early 2023 to help with the handoff; Amazon set the new leadership arrangements to take effect on January 1, 2023. The announcement does not establish an exact final working day.

This was Blackburn’s second retirement announcement from Amazon. He had first retired in February 2021, then returned to the company in May of that year. His second stint leading Global Media & Entertainment lasted about 18 months, based on the “year and a half” description in Amazon’s announcement. That period was brief compared with his overall relationship with the company, which began before he joined its payroll.

Who is Jeff Blackburn?

Blackburn worked at Deutsche Bank on Amazon’s 1997 initial public offering and joined Amazon in 1998. Across more than two decades at the company, he held leadership roles connected with the third-party marketplace, advertising, A9/Search, corporate and business development, Amazon Studios and Prime Video, and Music. Amazon’s 2006 annual report also identifies him as a senior business-development executive. These roles spanned multiple businesses and periods; they should not be read as one continuous job or a single fixed sequence.

That breadth helps explain why Blackburn’s return was about more than streaming video. In May 2021, Amazon brought him back to lead a media and entertainment group covering video, audio, gaming, and livestreaming.

What did Global Media & Entertainment include?

Amazon said Blackburn’s organization included Prime Video, Amazon Studios, Music, Podcasts and Wondery, Audible, Games, and Twitch. It brought together subscription and advertising-supported media, production, audio, gaming, and live creator content under one senior executive. His departure therefore raised an organizational question as well as a succession question: who would take responsibility for each part of that broad portfolio?

How did Amazon divide Blackburn’s responsibilities?

Amazon did not announce a single replacement with the same remit. Instead, two executives reported directly to Jassy, with responsibilities divided by business area:

Leader Responsibilities under the January 1, 2023 structure
Mike Hopkins Continued leading Prime Video and Amazon Studios, and oversaw MGM.
Steve Boom Continued leading Music and Podcasting, and added Audible, Twitch, and Games.

The change was a portfolio redistribution and reporting-line change, not a one-for-one appointment to Blackburn’s former role. Hopkins’s remit centered on video and MGM, while Boom’s combined music and podcasting with audiobooks, games, and livestreaming.

What projects did Jassy point to during Blackburn’s tenure?

In his message, Jassy associated Blackburn’s leadership period with three developments: the first season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power on Prime Video, Amazon’s first season of Thursday Night Football, and the acquisition and integration of MGM. These were examples Jassy cited; the announcement does not assign sole responsibility for any of them to Blackburn.

Jassy also said The Rings of Power set Prime Video viewing records and drove more Prime sign-ups during its launch window than any previous content. For Thursday Night Football, he cited a 20% increase among viewers aged 18–34 compared with the prior season’s linear-TV results. Those are Amazon’s claims in its internal announcement, not independently audited figures established by that announcement.

What does the timing say about Amazon’s entertainment strategy?

The transition came as Amazon was expanding across major entertainment formats: it had launched high-profile Prime Video programming, begun carrying live NFL games, and completed the MGM acquisition. The leadership announcement placed the resulting range of businesses under two senior executives who reported directly to Jassy.

That context makes the portfolio split significant, but it does not show that Blackburn’s retirement changed Amazon’s strategy or that a particular project prompted his departure. Amazon and Blackburn framed the decision as retirement, with Blackburn citing family time. The announcement provides no evidence of a management dispute, dissatisfaction with performance, or a decision to retreat from entertainment.
