Re:

loanDepot data breach: What happened to the approximately 16.9 million people potentially affected

loanDepot confirmed unauthorized access in January 2024. Here is the corrected 16.6-million-to-16.9-million timeline, potentially exposed data, settlement deadline and practical steps for notices received in 2026.

Yes—loanDepot disclosed a genuine cybersecurity incident. The unauthorized access occurred January 3–5, 2024. loanDepot initially referred to approximately 16.6 million individuals, then told the SEC it expected to notify up to approximately 16.9 million people. Those figures describe potentially affected individuals, not proof that every person’s complete identity record was stolen.

The company’s disclosures, settlement notices and individual letters are more precise than the shorthand “hackers stole 16 million customers’ data.” They establish unauthorized access to systems containing personal information and a population that may have been affected. They do not identify the attackers or establish that every listed data field was taken or misused.

What happened and when

Date What the public record says
January 3–5, 2024 The settlement notice identifies this as the incident window. Settlement FAQ
January 8, 2024 loanDepot said it disclosed the cyber incident.
January 22, 2024 The company’s update used an estimate of approximately 16.6 million individuals. loanDepot update
Later SEC filing loanDepot said it expected to notify up to approximately 16.9 million individuals. SEC filing

loanDepot said the incident affected systems and temporarily disrupted normal operations while it contained the event, investigated, worked with law enforcement and engaged regulators. The later legal notice described approximately 16,924,007 settlement-class members in the United States.

“Customers” is an imprecise label for the entire population. The settlement class consisted of people associated with loanDepot who received individualized notice that their personally identifiable information may have been impacted or compromised. That can include former or prospective customers, co-borrowers and people connected with an older application or servicing record.

What information may have been involved

The settlement FAQ says potentially affected information may have included:

  • Names
  • Addresses
  • Email addresses
  • Financial account numbers
  • Social Security numbers
  • Phone numbers
  • Dates of birth

This is a list of possible categories, not a statement that every person’s record contained every field. Your individual loanDepot notice is the authoritative source for whether you were identified and which information categories applied to you.

What is confirmed—and what is not

Confirmed or stated by loanDepot

  • An unauthorized third party accessed systems containing sensitive personal information.
  • loanDepot identified a large population for potential notification and said it would provide notices.
  • The company offered no-cost credit monitoring and identity-protection services to eligible people.

Not established by the reviewed public materials

  • The attackers’ identity or motive.
  • The exact amount of data exfiltrated.
  • Whether every person’s data was actually acquired or misused.
  • Whether every listed information category applied to every individual.

The settlement materials describe allegations that personal information was potentially acquired and expressly state that loanDepot denied wrongdoing and admitted no violation. A settlement resolves claims; it is not a finding that the company intentionally caused the incident.

Why the count changed from 16.6 million to 16.9 million

The January 22 update gave the initial estimate of approximately 16.6 million. A subsequent SEC disclosure used “up to approximately 16.9 million,” and the settlement website lists approximately 16,924,007 class members. Investigations commonly produce revised counts as forensic work, database matching and legal-notice procedures progress. The revised number does not, by itself, show that a second breach occurred.

What loanDepot offered affected people

loanDepot said affected individuals would receive credit monitoring and identity protection at no cost. A Maine breach notice described 24 months of monitoring and identity-theft protection through Experian. Service length and eligibility can depend on the notice and jurisdiction, so check your own letter rather than assuming the same benefit remains available.

The class-action settlement and its 2026 status

The case is In re loanDepot Data Breach Litigation, case no. 8:24-cv-00136-DOC-JDE, in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. The settlement website described relief that could include financial monitoring, identity-theft insurance, a possible cash payment, a California-subclass payment, reimbursement for qualifying out-of-pocket costs and enhanced security measures valued by the site at more than $9 million.

The published claim deadline was May 27, 2025. That deadline has passed. A 2026 reader should not assume an ordinary claim can still be filed or that payment is automatic. Check the administrator’s current status page, any claim confirmation and court-approved distribution notices at loandepotbreachsettlement.com. Do not pay anyone who promises to unlock a settlement payment.

What loanDepot’s latest filing says

In its fiscal-2025 Form 10-K filed in 2026, loanDepot reported $1.8 million in cybersecurity-incident expenses during 2025, including amounts paid to settle related lawsuits. It had reported $24.6 million net of insurance recoveries for 2024. The filing also says a loss-contingency reserve related to the cybersecurity settlement decreased by $29.1 million and that the company continued engaging with regulators. The reserve reduction should not be treated as a definitive settlement payout without a supporting court order or accounting detail. Fiscal-2025 Form 10-K

What to do if you received a notice

1. Authenticate the communication

  1. Compare the name and contact details with records you recognize.
  2. Do not use links in an unexpected email or text. Navigate independently to the official settlement site or loanDepot’s official website.
  3. Use the phone number printed on the notice or official site, not one supplied by an unsolicited caller.
  4. Never provide a payment, cryptocurrency transfer or bank-login password to claim a benefit.

2. Check the historical deadline

The listed settlement deadline was May 27, 2025. Verify your own claim status and any current administrator instructions; do not rely on old social-media posts or copied claim forms.

3. Freeze all three credit files

A freeze is generally the strongest free step against fraudulent new-credit applications. Place one separately with each bureau:

A freeze can delay a mortgage, auto loan, credit-card or utility application until you temporarily lift it. Ask a lender which bureau it will check and thaw only as needed.

4. Review reports and accounts

  • Obtain all three reports at AnnualCreditReport.com.
  • Look for unfamiliar inquiries, accounts, addresses and collection activity.
  • Review bank and card statements.
  • Change passwords reused elsewhere and enable multifactor authentication.
  • Contact financial institutions through their official numbers if anything is suspicious.

5. Respond to evidence of identity theft

Use the Federal Trade Commission’s recovery system at IdentityTheft.gov. Notify the affected lender, bank, card issuer or government agency and preserve notices, screenshots, statements and claim correspondence.

Monitoring versus a credit freeze

Option What it does Limitation
Credit monitoring Alerts you to signals such as inquiries, new accounts or address changes. It generally alerts after activity and does not block an application.
Credit freeze Restricts access to a credit file for most new-credit applications. It must be lifted for many legitimate applications and does not stop tax, medical, employment, benefits or account-takeover fraud.

Paid identity-protection services can add three-bureau monitoring, dark-web alerts, restoration support or insurance, but they are optional. For example, Experian advertises a Premium plan with a seven-day trial followed by $24.99 per month if not canceled, subject to current terms, exclusions and availability: Experian IdentityWorks. A person whose main concern is new-account fraud can usually start with free freezes, free reports and account alerts.

Special situations

You do not remember using loanDepot

That can reflect an old application, servicing relationship, co-borrower or associated household record. It could also be a mistaken or fraudulent notice. Do not ignore it; verify through official channels without entering sensitive information into an unverified site.

Your notice arrived long after January 2024

The letter’s arrival date is not the incident date. Notification followed investigation and legal-notice procedures, while the stated incident window remained January 3–5, 2024.

Your Social Security number may be involved

Prioritize freezes at all three bureaus, IRS account security and tax-fraud precautions, financial-account review, and monitoring of government-benefit and employment records where relevant. Keep the notice as documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Was the loanDepot breach real?

Yes. loanDepot confirmed unauthorized third-party access in January 2024. Public materials establish access and potential impact, but not that every person’s complete data was stolen or misused.

Was my Social Security number exposed?

Only your individual notice can answer that. The settlement FAQ lists Social Security numbers among information that may have been involved, not as a field exposed for everyone.

Can I still file a settlement claim in 2026?

The published deadline was May 27, 2025. Check the administrator’s current status page and court notices; do not assume a new ordinary claim is available.

Will a credit freeze affect a mortgage application?

It can prevent a lender from accessing a frozen file. Ask which bureau the lender will use and temporarily lift the freeze only when necessary.
