The Linux Foundation Cloud Engineer Bootcamp was announced in 2020 as an online training path for people beginning a cloud career. Its documented curriculum moved from Linux administration into DevOps, containers and Kubernetes, and included LFCS and CKA certification exams. That description is historical: available sources do not confirm whether the beginner bootcamp is currently open or whether its curriculum, price or terms remain the same.

What the Cloud Engineer Bootcamp was

The Cloud Native Computing Foundation and The Linux Foundation announced the beginner-focused program on June 3, 2020. It was designed as a structured route from foundational Linux knowledge toward cloud-native technologies, rather than a single course on one cloud provider. CNCF’s launch announcement described an online bundle of courses, exams and learner support.

Historical curriculum and certifications

The launch announcement listed five courses and two certification exams:

  • Essentials of Linux System Administration (LFS201)
  • Linux Networking and Administration (LFS211)
  • Containers Fundamentals (LFS253)
  • DevOps and SRE Fundamentals: Implementing Continuous Delivery (LFS261)
  • Kubernetes Fundamentals (LFS258)
  • Linux Foundation Certified System Administrator (LFCS) exam
  • Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA) exam

The sequence connected Linux systems administration and networking to containers, continuous delivery and Kubernetes. A Linux Foundation badge record also describes self-paced courses and the LFCS and CKA exams. These sources document the program’s historical design; they do not establish that a current offering has the same courses or exam inclusions.

Time commitment and learning format

At launch, CNCF said learners could complete the bootcamp in about six months while studying 15–20 hours per week. That was a target, not a guaranteed completion time. The launch description also mentioned an online forum and weekday video office hours with instructors; those are historical support details, not a promise about current services.

A September 2023 response in the Linux Foundation forum said courses and exams were asynchronous and directed a newly enrolled learner to the Logistics course for office-hour details. This offers a later example of how learners accessed logistics, but does not establish today’s course format or support schedule. Read the forum exchange.

Beginner bootcamp versus the advanced program

In a March 2022 article, The Linux Foundation described its Cloud Engineer Bootcamp as appropriate for complete newcomers, while the separate Advanced Cloud Engineer Bootcamp was aimed at IT professionals with work experience but no specific cloud background. The article also points readers to a cloud career roadmap and free introductory courses, which can help someone explore the subject before committing to a structured program.

The advanced bootcamp was not the same product as the beginner program. Its July 2020 announcement described six courses covering containers, Kubernetes, service mesh, monitoring, logging and Helm, plus the CKA exam. It stated 12 months of access and a standard fee of $999 at that time; these launch-era terms apply to that separate program, not the beginner bootcamp or current pricing. See the advanced bootcamp announcement.

What to verify before paying

The available sources do not establish whether the beginner bootcamp is currently open for enrollment or specify its current price, exact curriculum, included exam attempts, access period or support arrangements. Confirm those details directly with The Linux Foundation before making a purchase decision.

If you compare it with another training route, check the practical terms that affect both the learning plan and total cost:

  • Prerequisites and assumed Linux or IT experience
  • Course topics and whether certification exams are included
  • Exam attempt and retake terms
  • Self-paced access versus scheduled classes
  • Instructor support and how to access it
  • Access duration, current total price and expected weekly study time

Historical launch information is not enough to establish current value, employment outcomes or salary prospects. No current price or outcome statistic is established by the sources cited here.
