Linux Foundation certifications are an umbrella, not one Linux exam. LFCA covers broad entry-level IT knowledge, LFCS tests practical Linux administration, and the CNCF credentials KCNA, KCSA, CKA, CKAD and CKS focus on Kubernetes and cloud-native work. The catalog also includes project-specific credentials for tools such as Prometheus, Istio, Argo, Cilium and OpenTelemetry.

Choose by the job you want and the work you can demonstrate—not by the popularity of a badge. Prices and exam versions change, so verify the official page before paying.

What “Linux Foundation certification” means

The Linux Foundation is a nonprofit organization that supports Linux and many open-source projects. Its Training & Certification operation administers credentials across several ecosystems; it does not own every project represented in the catalog.

Group Examples Best question to ask
Linux Foundation-branded LFCA, LFCS Do I need broad IT foundations or hands-on Linux administration?
CNCF/Kubernetes KCNA, KCSA, CKA, CKAD, CKS Am I targeting cloud-native operations, development or security?
Project or ecosystem PCA, ICA, CAPA, CCA, OTCA, CGOA, RVFA, CODE, HFCP Is this technology central to my current or target role?

The current catalog is listed at Linux Foundation Training’s certification catalog. Its learning-path page also groups credentials by career direction at Linux Foundation learning paths.

Linux-focused choices

LFCA: broad foundations

Linux Foundation describes the LFCA as a pre-professional credential for people beginning an IT administrator or engineer career. It is online, proctored and multiple choice, with a 90-minute limit and no formal prerequisite.

Its exam weighting is Linux fundamentals 16%, system administration 30%, cloud computing 18%, security 14%, DevOps 12% and IT project management 10%. That breadth makes LFCA useful for help-desk, junior operations and cloud-support candidates, but it does not demonstrate deep operational Linux ability.

LFCS: practical Linux administration

The LFCS is the main Linux Foundation credential for hands-on Linux administration. It is a two-hour, online, proctored performance exam performed from a command line and is described as distribution-independent.

The current domains are operations and deployment (25%), networking (25%), storage (20%), essential commands (20%) and users and groups (10%). Tasks include services and processes, packages, SSH, firewalls and routing, LVM and filesystems, swap, containers, SELinux, permissions, ACLs and LDAP. Distribution neutrality is useful, but an employer may still require practical Red Hat, Ubuntu, SUSE or cloud-platform knowledge.

The Kubernetes and cloud-native path

KCNA and KCSA: foundations

KCNA establishes Kubernetes and cloud-native vocabulary and architecture. KCSA covers foundational Kubernetes and cloud-native security, configuration and compliance concepts. They suit learners, developers, junior engineers and security professionals who work alongside clusters but do not yet need to prove advanced production operations.

CKA: cluster administration

CKA is aimed at cluster administrators, platform engineers, DevOps engineers and infrastructure specialists. Its practical work covers cluster architecture, installation and configuration, workloads and scheduling, networking, storage, troubleshooting, security and maintenance. It is a poor substitute for real cluster operations if you have only watched courses.

CKAD: application development

The CKAD tests designing, building, configuring and exposing cloud-native applications. The page currently shows Kubernetes v1.35; the environment is generally updated toward the newest minor version about four to eight weeks after release. It is a two-hour, online, proctored performance exam with no formal prerequisite, although container-runtime knowledge, microservice familiarity, Linux command-line fluency and YAML practice are realistic preparation requirements.

CKS: specialist security

CKS is for practitioners whose work includes cluster hardening, workload and supply-chain security, network policy and runtime defense. It is normally a later choice for someone with strong Kubernetes administration skills. Confirm the current prerequisite and exam rules on the CKS page before purchase.

These credentials are not a mandatory ladder. A developer may go from KCNA directly to CKAD; an administrator may choose CKA without taking KCNA.

Specialized project credentials

Project certifications are valuable when the project appears in your employer’s stack or target job description. Examples include:

  • PCA: Prometheus and observability.
  • ICA: Istio service mesh.
  • CAPA: Argo workflows and delivery.
  • CCA: Cilium networking, security and observability.
  • OTCA: OpenTelemetry.
  • CGOA: GitOps.
  • RVFA: RISC-V fundamentals.
  • CODE: open-source development practices for enterprise environments.
  • HFCP: Hyperledger Fabric.

A narrow project credential can be persuasive to the right employer, but it is usually less portable than a broad credential such as LFCS or CKA. Pair it with a project, deployment or contribution you can explain.

How the exams work

Knowledge versus performance

LFCA is primarily knowledge validation through multiple-choice questions. LFCS, CKA, CKAD and CKS require completing technical tasks in a live or simulated command-line environment. Performance exams reward accurate reading, context or namespace selection, efficient documentation use where permitted, validation and recovery—not passive video watching.

Eligibility, attempts and simulators

Current LFCA, LFCS and CKAD pages show a 12-month eligibility window. The listed packages include a digital badge, PDF certificate and simulator access, but the exact terms differ: LFCA and CKAD pages show one retake, while LFCS shows two exam attempts. Confirm the package attached to the credential you are buying.

LFCS and CKAD identify Killer.sh as the simulator provider. CKAD lists two simulation attempts, each with 36 hours of access after activation; LFCS describes two attempts and a simulation containing 20–25 questions. A simulator is preparation, not the live exam, and its score is not a pass guarantee.

Validity and renewal

Linux Foundation candidate documentation generally states that certifications expire 24 months after successful completion unless revoked or maintained through applicable renewal arrangements. Older or legacy credentials and special programs can differ. Check the current policy at the certification handbook and use the official verification process when status matters.

Prices, courses and bundles

The catalog and individual pages display exam vouchers, courses, subscriptions and promotions. Examples visible on Aug. 18, 2026 include:

Offer Price shown When it makes sense
LFCA exam only $250 You already have broad fundamentals
LFCA + THRIVE-ONE annual subscription $495 You plan to use multiple courses during the year
LFS200 + LFCA $299 You want the official introductory course
LFCS exam only $445 You can already perform Linux administration tasks
LFCS + THRIVE-ONE $625 You will use broad subscription content
LFS207 + LFCS $645 You want official Linux administration training
CKAD exam only $445 You have application-side Kubernetes practice
CKAD + THRIVE-ONE $625 You expect to study several cloud-native subjects

Compare the exam-only price with the course-plus-exam and subscription-plus-exam total, your expected study period and whether you will actually use the included material. A larger bundle is not automatically cheaper for a single-certification goal. Start at the catalog and confirm the checkout total for your country.

Which certification fits your goal?

Choose LFCA when

  • You are new to IT and need broad Linux, cloud, security and DevOps foundations.
  • You are considering help desk, junior operations, cloud support or entry-level administration.
  • You want a lower-risk introduction before deeper Linux or Kubernetes work.

Choose LFCS when

  • You target Linux administrator, systems engineer, infrastructure or general DevOps roles.
  • You can already use the shell and understand services, networking, storage and permissions.
  • You need evidence of operational Linux ability rather than broad awareness.

Choose KCNA or KCSA when

  • You are entering cloud-native work and need foundational architecture or security vocabulary.
  • You work adjacent to Kubernetes but are not yet responsible for clusters.

Choose CKA, CKAD or CKS when

  • CKA: you want cluster administration or platform engineering work.
  • CKAD: you develop, configure and expose applications on Kubernetes.
  • CKS: Kubernetes security is a substantial responsibility and you already have strong administration skills.

Choose a project credential when

  • The project is named in target job postings or is central to your current stack.
  • You can show a related deployment, contribution, dashboard, policy or runbook.

Preparation that matches the exam

  1. Read the current official objectives and note the exam version, especially for Kubernetes.
  2. Build a lab: configure Linux users, SSH, firewalling, storage, backups and monitoring; or deploy and troubleshoot Kubernetes workloads.
  3. Practice complete workflows, including selecting the correct host, context or namespace and validating the result.
  4. Use the official curriculum and included simulator where relevant; rehearse timed tasks rather than memorizing demonstrations.
  5. Before scheduling, confirm permitted resources, identity and proctoring requirements, eligibility expiration, retake terms and current pricing.

Are Linux Foundation certifications worth it?

They are most defensible when a target employer names Linux, Kubernetes or the relevant project; the exam tests work you can demonstrate; and you use preparation to build practical ability. Employer payment or explicit recognition also improves the value proposition.

They are less compelling as a badge-collection exercise, when the employer requires another vendor’s credential, when you have no environment in which to apply the material, or when a specialized certificate is unrelated to the intended role. No credential proves production judgment, incident ownership or safe operation under pressure, and none guarantees a job or salary increase.
