LG.Philips LCD’s planned factory in Poland became a module production plant near Wroclaw: construction began in June 2006, and the company reported that mass production started in March 2007. The site assembled LCD modules; it was not one of the company’s TFT-LCD panel fabrication facilities.

Where was the LG.Philips LCD factory in Poland?

The plant was in the Wroclaw area, at Kobierzyce in southwestern Poland. LG.Philips LCD’s 2006 Form 20-F identifies the Wroclaw facility as a module production plant, while a Polish government legal record refers to the Kobierzyce project as a factory producing modules for LCD screens.

When did the Wroclaw LCD plant start production?

LG.Philips LCD reported in its 2006 Form 20-F that construction began in June 2006 and mass production commenced in March 2007. These dates describe the company’s reported project outcomes, rather than only the original schedule.

What did the Polish LG.Philips factory make?

It produced LCD modules. That distinction matters: the company’s filing separately describes its TFT-LCD fabrication facilities, which make display panels, and its module assembly facilities, including the Wroclaw site. The Polish plant should therefore be described as a module production or assembly plant, not a panel fabrication plant.

LG.Philips LCD expected the Polish facility to reach an initial capacity of 3 million modules per year by the end of 2007. The filing gives this as an expectation; it does not establish that the plant ultimately achieved that capacity.

Why did LG.Philips LCD build the plant?

The company said the facility would help it serve European customers and expand its global production capabilities. In its Form 20-F, LG.Philips LCD wrote: “We anticipate that the Polish plant will help better serve our European customers and further expand our global production capabilities.”

Contemporary reporting put the planned project cost at close to €430 million. Eurofound’s 2006 factsheet presents this as an estimate reported around the announcement, not as verified final spending. It also summarized projections of 10,000 planned jobs and €290 million associated with cooperating entities and suppliers; those are announcement-era estimates, not confirmed employment or audited outcomes. How did Toshiba fit into the Polish project?

In October 2006, ITmedia reported Toshiba’s investment in LG.Philips LCD Poland as a way to stabilize panel supply for Toshiba’s television production facility in Poland. At the time, the subsidiary’s production was still described as planned for the first quarter of 2007; LG.Philips LCD’s later filing records the actual mass-production start as March 2007.
