Lenovo’s November 2024 earnings contained an important mismatch: revenue climbed 24% year over year to US$17.85 billion, while PC-unit growth was only about 3%. The company nevertheless raised its own fiscal-2025 PC-growth outlook from roughly 5–10% to 10–15%, betting on AI-capable computers and a Windows-driven replacement cycle.
That is not a contradiction. Revenue can rise faster than shipments when buyers choose more expensive systems, component costs lift prices, or growth comes from servers, services and smartphones as well as PCs. Lenovo’s subsequent results show that the strategy worked better than the headline alone implied—but also that inventory and memory-cost inflation can make reported growth look healthier than underlying demand.
What Lenovo reported in the November 2024 quarter
Lenovo’s fiscal second-quarter 2024/25 results, reported on November 15, 2024, showed a sharp improvement in the company’s financial performance:
| Measure | Reported result |
|---|---|
| Group revenue | US$17.85 billion, up 24% year over year |
| Net income | US$359 million, up 44% year over year |
| Intelligent Devices Group revenue | US$13.5 billion, up 17% |
| PC-unit growth | Approximately 3% year over year |
| Lenovo’s revised fiscal-2025 PC outlook | 10–15% unit growth, raised from roughly 5–10% |
The figures come from the contemporary earnings report. Lenovo’s 10–15% figure was a company forecast, not an independent industry consensus or a guarantee.

Why revenue grew much faster than PC shipments
Revenue and units measure different things
Shipments count computers. Revenue counts the money collected from computers and every other business in the reporting period. If average selling prices rise, customers move toward premium models, or a company’s non-PC divisions expand, revenue can accelerate without a comparable increase in unit volume.
Premium systems lift the average selling price
Lenovo’s later disclosures illustrate the mix effect. In the fourth quarter of fiscal 2025/26, premium machines represented 50% of Lenovo’s PC shipments, while premium shipments rose 29% year over year. A larger share of high-end ThinkPad, Yoga, gaming and other premium configurations can therefore add more revenue per unit than entry-level volume alone.
This does not prove that every AI-branded laptop commands a lasting premium. It shows why a 3% shipment increase and a much larger revenue increase can occur together.
Component prices can raise sales without improving demand
Higher memory and storage costs can be passed through to customers, increasing reported revenue even when the number of computers sold is flat. That distinction became especially important in 2026, when Gartner said rising DRAM and NAND costs encouraged manufacturers and distributors to build inventory before expected price increases.

The Intelligent Devices Group includes PCs and smart devices, but Lenovo also sells servers and storage, enterprise services, smartphones through Motorola, tablets and accessories. In fiscal 2025/26, Infrastructure Solutions Group revenue rose 32% to US$19.2 billion, while Solutions and Services Group revenue exceeded US$10 billion, growing 19%. Those businesses can materially change group revenue even when notebook demand is modest.

Why Lenovo raised its PC-growth outlook
AI PCs
Lenovo linked its improved outlook to growing demand for PCs with processors and neural-processing hardware designed for local AI workloads. In the company’s first quarter of fiscal 2025/26, AI PCs accounted for more than 30% of its shipments, and Lenovo said it held a 31% share of the Windows AI-PC segment.
Lenovo also said AI PCs could reach approximately 80% of the PC market by 2027. That is a forward-looking company expectation, not an established market fact. “AI PC” is not a perfectly standardized category: definitions can depend on the processor, neural-processing-unit capability and software features included.
The Windows replacement cycle
Businesses and households tend to replace computers in waves. An operating-system support deadline can concentrate those decisions after years of deferred purchases. Windows 10 reached its stated end-of-support date on October 14, 2025, making the period around 2024–25 a plausible catalyst for commercial refreshes.
The deadline did not mean every Windows 10 computer had to be replaced immediately. Organizations could use extended-support arrangements or other mitigations, and refresh timing could spread across several quarters. Commercial notebooks and desktops were more likely to benefit first than price-sensitive consumer systems.
A recovering market
Lenovo’s forecast assumed that the broader PC market would recover after a prolonged replacement pause. The company expected AI features, operating-system transitions and older-device replacement to combine into faster fiscal-2025 unit growth. That remained Lenovo’s outlook rather than a promise that each quarter would deliver 10–15% growth.

AI PCs are growing, but AI is not all PC revenue
Three separate questions are often collapsed into one:
- Are AI-capable computers becoming a larger share of shipments? Lenovo’s own disclosures indicate that they are.
- Can higher specifications support higher selling prices? They can, especially in premium segments, although the size and durability of any premium vary by model and market.
- Are AI features creating enough new value to make people replace otherwise usable computers? That remains a forecast, not a proven universal behavior.
Lenovo reported that AI-related revenue represented 33% of full-year group revenue and 38% of fourth-quarter revenue in fiscal 2025/26. Those percentages include AI infrastructure and services as well as PCs. They should not be read as AI-PC sales alone.

Lenovo’s fiscal 2025/26 results show a broader and stronger growth story than a simple notebook rebound:
| Fiscal 2025/26 measure | Lenovo-reported result |
|---|---|
| Full-year revenue | US$83.1 billion, up 20% |
| Adjusted net income | US$2 billion, up 42% |
| Fourth-quarter group revenue | US$21.6 billion, up 27% |
| Fourth-quarter Intelligent Devices Group revenue | US$14.6 billion, up 24% |
| Fourth-quarter PC and smart-device revenue | Up 26% |
| Fourth-quarter global PC share | 24.4%, according to Lenovo |
| Full-year Intelligent Devices Group revenue | US$58.9 billion, up 17% |
These figures are from Lenovo’s fiscal 2025/26 results release. Lenovo said its PC shipments in that quarter outpaced the market by nearly six percentage points. In the preceding quarter, it said PC volume had exceeded the market for 10 consecutive quarters and that calendar-year share was 24.9%. Vendor-reported comparisons can differ from Gartner, IDC or Canalys because the firms may use different periods, geographies and shipment definitions.
The later results do not prove that the 2024 forecast alone produced the outcome. They show that premium mix, market-share gains, AI infrastructure and services reinforced the PC business.

The risks behind the growth headline
Inventory can pull demand forward
Gartner reported that worldwide PC shipments reached 62.8 million in the first quarter of 2026, up 4% year over year. It cautioned that the increase was artificially boosted by inventory accumulation ahead of expected price rises caused by memory-cost inflation. A strong shipment quarter can therefore be followed by a softer period when distributors work through stock.

Higher prices can squeeze margins
Passing component costs to customers may protect revenue but not necessarily profitability. Buyers can delay purchases, trade down to cheaper configurations or accept fewer devices. Investors should therefore examine gross and operating margins alongside revenue.
AI may substitute for an upgrade rather than create one
A customer who would have bought a conventional laptop may choose an AI-capable replacement instead. That changes product mix but does not add a new unit to the market. The durable-growth case requires useful software, sufficient performance gains and a reason for owners of functioning PCs to replace them sooner.
Forecasts and market definitions differ
Lenovo’s 80% AI-PC projection and 10–15% fiscal-2025 outlook were company statements. They should not be presented as settled industry forecasts. Market researchers also differ in how they classify shipments, refurbished products, channel inventory and AI-capable hardware.

What to watch in Lenovo’s next reports
- Shipments versus the total market: sustained share gains are more informative than one quarter of growth.
- Premium mix and average selling price: rising revenue with flat units may reflect mix or inflation rather than stronger underlying demand.
- AI-PC penetration: track actual shipment proportions separately from Lenovo’s broader AI-revenue figure.
- Commercial refresh activity: enterprise replacements should reveal whether Windows-related demand is lasting or merely front-loaded.
- Memory and NAND costs: component inflation can lift prices while reducing affordability and margins.
- Infrastructure and services: ISG and SSG growth determine how much of Lenovo’s expansion is independent of consumer PCs.
- Inventory: compare sell-in shipments with channel conditions to identify pull-forward effects.
What the numbers mean for PC buyers
Lenovo’s growth does not automatically make every Lenovo computer the right purchase. A buyer replacing an old device should match the configuration to the workload:
- Basic web, email and documents may not justify paying extra for an AI-focused configuration.
- Business fleets should price warranty, deployment, security management and lifecycle support, not just the laptop.
- AI or creator workloads may justify a newer processor, larger memory allocation and stronger graphics, but the software must use those capabilities.
- Enterprise AI infrastructure and Lenovo servers are a different procurement decision from an ordinary notebook and are generally quote-based.
