Lenovo Revenue Rises 9% in Fiscal Q4 as Company Bets on AI PCs

Lenovo’s 9% increase was fiscal Q4 revenue, not Q1 earnings. Quarterly profit more than doubled from a weak base, while full-year revenue and income still fell and AI PCs remained a future growth bet.

Lenovo’s May 23, 2024 results were for fiscal fourth quarter (Q4 FY2023/24), not fiscal Q1. Revenue for the quarter ended March 31, 2024, reached about US$13.8 billion, up 9% year over year, while net income attributable to Lenovo shareholders rose 118% to US$248 million. The full fiscal year was weaker: revenue fell 8% to about US$56.9 billion and net income declined 37% to approximately US$1.0 billion.

That makes the report an early recovery signal, not proof that artificial-intelligence PCs had already transformed Lenovo’s earnings. Lenovo is presenting AI PCs, AI infrastructure and AI-enabled services as future growth opportunities.

First, correct the “Q1” label

Lenovo’s fiscal year ends March 31. Its investor calendar identifies May 23, 2024 as the Q4 FY2023/24 announcement; Q1 FY2024/25 results were scheduled for August 15, 2024. The figures commonly described as “Q1 earnings” therefore belong to the fiscal quarter ending March 31, 2024.

The numbers behind the rebound

The 9% figure refers to revenue, not profit. Lenovo’s reported statutory net income increased much faster because the comparison quarter came during the PC industry downturn and provided a depressed base.

Measure Q4 FY2023/24 Full FY2023/24
Revenue About US$13.8 billion; up 9% year over year About US$56.9 billion; down 8%
Net income attributable to Lenovo shareholders US$248 million; up 118% About US$1.0 billion; down 37%
Non-PC revenue mix 45% of revenue, a historic high according to Lenovo

A quarterly profit increase of 118% means net income more than doubled from a weak prior-year level. It does not establish a new normal for margins, and it cannot be read as full-year profit growth. Lenovo’s release also presents non-HKFRS adjusted figures; those should not be mixed with the statutory net-income figures above.

PCs recovered, but Lenovo is not only a PC company

Intelligent Devices Group

The Intelligent Devices Group (IDG), which includes PCs, smartphones and tablets, generated about US$10.5 billion in the quarter and US$44.6 billion for the fiscal year. Lenovo reported approximately 22.9% global PC market share in the quarter and said it ranked first in four of five geographic regions, with record-high share in North America.

PC, tablet and smartphone operations returned to growth in the second half of the fiscal year. Smartphone shipments and revenue grew at double-digit rates year over year. These results show a broader device recovery rather than evidence that AI laptops alone caused the quarter’s improvement.

Infrastructure Solutions Group

The Infrastructure Solutions Group (ISG) produced about US$2.5 billion of quarterly revenue, up 15% year over year. Storage, software and services revenue combined increased by more than 50%, high-performance-computing revenue reached a record, and Lenovo said AI-server demand should grow faster than the overall server market. Infrastructure growth, alongside smartphones, tablets, software and services, helped diversify the quarter’s result.

What Lenovo means by an AI PC

In the 2024 market context, an AI PC generally meant a computer with an NPU (neural-processing unit) in addition to a CPU and GPU. The CPU handles general-purpose work, the GPU handles graphics and highly parallel workloads, and the NPU is designed for efficient AI inference.

  • On-device processing: Supported tasks can run locally with lower latency, possible privacy benefits and lower power use.
  • Cloud processing: Larger or more demanding models still commonly require remote data-center capacity.
  • The label is not a performance guarantee: NPU speed, memory, battery life, application support, operating-system compatibility and the duration of useful software updates vary by model.

A laptop carrying an AI-PC badge may therefore deliver very different real-world benefits from another model. A chatbot shortcut alone does not establish that most workloads run locally.

Lenovo’s replacement-cycle thesis

Lenovo argues that AI features could help restart PC replacement demand after the pandemic-era buying surge faded:

  1. Many older PCs are approaching normal replacement age.
  2. New local-AI capabilities could give owners a reason to upgrade instead of extending the life of a working system.
  3. As software improves, NPU-equipped machines could move from premium products into mainstream price ranges.
  4. A wider refresh cycle could increase both unit shipments and average selling prices.

Chief executive Yuanqing Yang was reported as expecting AI PCs to represent about 10% of Lenovo’s shipments by the end of 2024 and 50% to 60% by 2026. Those are management expectations, not independent market forecasts; the figures are discussed in Lenovo’s financial materials and in contemporary coverage.

Why the AI-PC thesis may take time

  • Consumers may not see enough benefit to replace a functional PC, particularly when many AI functions remain cloud-dependent.
  • AI workloads differ sharply by application. A buyer focused on gaming may gain more from a faster GPU than from a higher-performing NPU.
  • Businesses typically require security, manageability and measurable productivity gains before refreshing large fleets.
  • AI-capable systems can carry a price premium while software support remains uneven.
  • Intel, AMD, Qualcomm, Microsoft and other manufacturers influence processor capability, Windows features and the category’s usefulness.

Consequently, Lenovo’s AI-PC forecast is a longer-term growth thesis layered on top of a cyclical PC recovery. The company did not quantify AI PCs as the sole cause of the quarter’s revenue or profit increase.

Mainland China is a separate software case

Lenovo told reporters that Microsoft Copilot technologies could not be used in mainland China because of government restrictions. It said it would offer customers there a similar or better experience through Lenovo and third-party solutions, as reported by Thurrott. This is a market-specific statement about Microsoft-branded Copilot features; it does not mean all AI-PC functions are unavailable in mainland China.

What investors should watch next

Lenovo’s durability will depend on whether the quarterly improvement persists beyond an easy comparison. Useful indicators include:

  • Revenue and unit growth in subsequent quarters, rather than a single rebound quarter.
  • Average selling prices and premium-device mix in IDG.
  • IDG operating margins and the cost of components, inventory and currency movements.
  • ISG profitability and whether AI-server demand converts into sustained orders.
  • Growth in software and services relative to lower-margin hardware.
  • Whether AI-PC sales add to total shipments or simply replace conventional PCs.
  • Exposure to enterprise spending and mainland China.
  • The difference between statutory and adjusted profit measures.

What the results mean for a PC buyer

An AI PC is most defensible when a buyer is already due for a refresh, uses applications that support local AI, values battery-efficient processing, and selects enough memory and storage for several years. Before buying, verify processor compatibility, application support and whether desired features work offline or require a cloud service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Waiting may be sensible when the purchase is driven only by an AI label, the price premium is substantial, current software support is limited, or the main workload is GPU-intensive gaming. Enterprise buyers should also validate imaging, docking, security, fleet-management and warranty requirements for the exact configuration.

Bottom line

Lenovo’s fiscal Q4 delivered a meaningful 9% revenue rebound and a 118% quarterly net-income jump from a weak comparison base. Yet full-year revenue and profit were still down, so the evidence supports a cautious recovery narrative. AI PCs could create a new replacement cycle, but Lenovo’s shipment targets remain management projections and their commercial impact is not yet proven.
