Lenovo Revenue Climbed 20% in June 2024 as the PC Recovery Broadened

Lenovo’s 20% revenue increase in its June 2024 quarter reflected a broader recovery than PC shipments alone, with infrastructure and services also contributing.

Lenovo reported revenue of US$15.447 billion for the quarter ended June 30, 2024, up 20% year over year. Announced on August 15, 2024, the result marked a strong rebound after a prolonged PC downturn—but it did not mean PC sales rose 20%. PC shipments grew much more modestly, while servers, services, smartphones, tablets and a shift toward higher-value products also lifted revenue.

What Lenovo reported

The figures below cover Lenovo’s first quarter of fiscal 2024/25. Profit measures differ because they use different accounting definitions; they should not be treated as interchangeable.

Measure Q1 FY2024/25 Year-over-year change
Revenue US$15.447 billion +20%
Gross profit US$2.560 billion +14%
Gross margin 16.6% Down from 17.5%
Operating profit US$494 million +27%
Pre-tax income US$313 million +37%
Profit for the period US$253 million +38%
Profit attributable to Lenovo equity holders, HKFRS US$243 million +38%
Profit attributable to Lenovo equity holders, non-HKFRS US$315 million +65%

Lenovo’s results statement reports the period’s US$253 million profit, while US$243 million is the portion attributable to Lenovo equity holders under Hong Kong Financial Reporting Standards. The US$315 million figure is the company’s non-HKFRS adjusted measure of profit attributable to equity holders, not the statutory figure. Lenovo’s financial-results statement and earnings announcement provide the definitions and full results.

PCs were recovering, but not at the group’s 20% rate

The quarter was evidence that Lenovo’s PC business had turned toward growth, not that PC shipments increased by one-fifth. An IDC-based contemporary report put Lenovo’s shipments at about 14.7 million PCs, up 3.7% year over year. That estimate is distinct from Lenovo’s total-company revenue figure. The same report cited roughly 22.5% market share; Lenovo separately said it retained global PC leadership with 23%. The figures have different attributions and may reflect differences in measurement or definitions, so they should not be combined as if they were one measure.

The broader industry was stabilizing and returning to growth after several quarters of contraction. That was a recovery from the post-pandemic downturn, not a return to the exceptional demand surge of the pandemic period. Lenovo’s own non-PC businesses accounted for 47% of group revenue, five percentage points more than a year earlier, helping explain why total revenue moved faster than PC unit volume.

Why revenue can outpace unit shipments

Lenovo cited a recovery in commercial demand, premium products and higher-value models. Business systems typically have different pricing and configurations from consumer PCs, and Lenovo said almost 70% of its PC revenue came from commercial sales. It also reported premium PC sales growth of 21%. Together, stronger commercial demand and product mix can raise revenue faster than the number of machines shipped. Lenovo did not quantify each factor’s separate contribution to the 20% group increase.

Three divisions show where growth came from

Business group Revenue and growth Operating result What it indicates
Intelligent Devices Group (IDG) About US$11.4 billion; +11% About US$828 million profit PCs, smartphones and tablets; commercial and premium PC demand supported results.
Infrastructure Solutions Group (ISG) About US$3.2 billion; +65% About US$60 million loss Servers and infrastructure grew sharply, with cloud-service-provider demand a key driver.
Solutions and Services Group (SSG) About US$1.9 billion Record operating profit of about US$361 million Services added revenue beyond hardware and a substantial profit contribution.

Division figures are approximate and were reported in contemporary coverage of the quarter; Lenovo’s business-group and PC-market report provides these breakdowns.

Intelligent Devices Group: the PC core, plus mobile devices

IDG includes PCs, smartphones and tablets, so its 11% growth is broader than PC growth alone. Lenovo said smartphone and tablet revenue each grew roughly 30% year over year. Its PC performance benefited from commercial demand and premium models, while the group’s approximately US$828 million operating profit shows that its growth was profitable.

Infrastructure Solutions Group: fast growth, losses still present

ISG’s 65% revenue increase was the fastest among the three groups, with cloud-service-provider demand driving much of the expansion. But the division still recorded an operating loss of about US$60 million. The result shows why rapid infrastructure sales growth should not be mistaken for immediate profitability. ISG was also part of Lenovo’s AI infrastructure strategy—servers and related systems—not the consumer AI-PC category.

Solutions and Services Group: a profitable counterweight

SSG produced about US$1.9 billion in revenue and a record operating profit of roughly US$361 million. Services broaden Lenovo’s business beyond device and server sales, and their contribution supports the company’s strategy to grow as a technology-services provider as well as a hardware maker.

AI PCs were a strategic bet, not a proven cause of the quarter’s growth

Lenovo presented AI PCs as the start of a potential new product cycle. It pointed to early AI-PC launches in China, positive initial feedback and an Arm-based model using Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite. The company also described a “hybrid AI” strategy spanning devices, servers, software and services.

In this context, “AI PC” refers to a computer designed to run AI features locally or support them through a broader AI system, but vendors did not necessarily use a single uniform technical definition. Lenovo expected AI PCs to account for more than half of the PC market by 2027; that was Lenovo’s forecast, not an established market outcome. In June 2024, the category was still at an early stage. The results do not establish that AI PCs caused the 20% revenue increase: commercial refreshes, premium systems and non-PC businesses also mattered. Durable demand depended on useful software, customers’ willingness to upgrade and benefits that justified the cost.

What the rebound did—and did not—say about Lenovo

Contemporary coverage described the quarter as Lenovo’s third consecutive quarter of year-over-year revenue growth after five quarters of decline, and its first double-digit increase in roughly two and a half years. That makes the result a meaningful inflection point, while the falling gross margin and ISG loss temper the headline. Revenue grew 20%, but gross margin narrowed to 16.6% from 17.5%, so higher sales did not translate into an improved gross-margin rate.

Later results add useful hindsight without changing what the June quarter measured. Lenovo reported revenue growth of 24% to US$17.9 billion for Q2 FY2024/25, announced November 15, 2024, and 22% to US$18.83 billion for Q1 FY2025/26. Those subsequent results indicate that the rebound continued beyond one quarter; they do not make the original 20% a PC-only growth rate. See Lenovo’s Q2 FY2024/25 announcement and Q1 FY2025/26 results.

Risks to keep in view

  • Margin pressure: Gross margin fell despite the revenue increase.
  • Infrastructure profitability: ISG’s rapid growth came with an operating loss.
  • Uneven PC demand: Recovery can vary by region, customer type and price tier; company-wide revenue is not a direct measure of consumer-PC demand.
  • AI adoption uncertainty: Lenovo’s forecast depends on practical applications and willingness to upgrade, neither of which the quarter alone established.
  • Different profit definitions: HKFRS and non-HKFRS figures answer different accounting questions and require explicit labels.
