Leeds Digital Festival 2026: Scale, Regional Tech Growth and Economic Impact

Leeds Digital Festival ran from 21 September to 2 October 2026, with BusinessCloud reporting more than 9,000 delegates, 220 events and activity across 95 venues in Leeds and online. Those figures show the festival’s reported reach; they do not prove that it caused regional business growth, investment or job creation. The “economic engine” description is festival director Deb Hetherington’s assessment, while the technology-sector statistics cited alongside it are attributed to The Data City.

What is Leeds Digital Festival?

Leeds Digital Festival is a technology-focused programme built from events hosted by different organisers. The official organiser describes it as an open platform: individuals and organisations submit their own technology-related events, arrange their own speakers and run the events themselves. It is not a single centrally produced conference.

The 2026 main festival took place from 21 September to 2 October. A 2026 sponsorship deck also describes a curated Mini-Fest held from 21 to 23 April, alongside the open-platform September–October programme. The deck calls Leeds Digital a year-round platform; these are the organiser’s descriptions of its format.

How large was the 2026 festival?

BusinessCloud reported that the 11th edition welcomed more than 9,000 delegates and featured 220 events organised by 198 regional companies. The report also counted speakers from more than 400 organisations and 95 venues across Leeds and online. “Delegates” is the reported measure; the article does not establish that these were unique attendees.

BusinessCloud described a programme spanning AI and data, FinTech, HealthTech, GEO, quantum computing and women leaders in technology. It also reported an opening networking session hosted by CGI, focused on collaboration among small and medium-sized businesses.

What the reported technology-sector figures say

BusinessCloud’s 2 October 2026 article attributed several Leeds technology-economy figures to new research from The Data City. The underlying study, its methods and precise geographic definitions were not included in the article, so these should be treated as reported estimates rather than independently verified measurements.

Reported measure Figure and attribution
Technology companies in Leeds 853 distinct companies, attributed to The Data City and reported by BusinessCloud in 2026; the article says this was more than any other local authority outside London.
Annual technology-sector growth 8.3% for Leeds and 8.1% for the UK average, attributed to The Data City and reported by BusinessCloud in 2026.
High-growth technology businesses 13% of local technology businesses, with high growth defined in the report as annual growth above 20%; attributed to The Data City and reported by BusinessCloud in 2026.
Gross value added £1.67 billion attributed to the Leeds technology economy’s contribution to the UK economy; attributed to The Data City and reported by BusinessCloud in 2026.

These figures describe the regional technology sector in the account BusinessCloud reported; they are not a measurement of value produced by the festival.

Does Leeds Digital Festival boost the regional economy?

The available figures support a distinction between the festival’s scale and its economic effect. Event totals, participating companies, speakers and venues are reported outputs. Establishing that the festival caused additional jobs, investment, contracts or business expansion would require evidence linking those outcomes to festival participation and comparing them with what would have happened otherwise. The sources cited here do not provide that kind of impact evaluation.

Festival director Deb Hetherington called Leeds Digital Festival “an active economic engine driving business expansion, attracting investment, and opening tangible career pathways.” That is her characterization of the festival, not an independently measured causal finding in the material reviewed.

Russell Brown, CEO at SCC UK, also praised Leeds as a technology and investment centre and described the festival as creating opportunities for resilience and talent development across Yorkshire. Brown’s comments are those of a sponsor-side speaker. They express support and a view of the festival’s role, rather than an independent evaluation.

How the festival works for organisers and attendees

Submitting an event

Under the organiser’s open-platform model, event hosts create and run their own technology-related sessions and submit them for inclusion in the programme. The official page says the 2026 submission window ran from 8 June to 24 July and is closed. The organiser does not run every listed event or supply its speakers.

Booking and tickets

Each event uses its own booking system, so there is no single central festival ticket that covers every event. Check the listing for the particular event you want to attend for its booking details.

Sponsoring a future edition

The official organiser page says 2026 sponsorship is closed and directs interested organisations toward 2027 packages. Sponsorship is presented as a direct enquiry route. CGI separately announced that it became headline sponsor in 2026 under a three-year partnership; that announcement describes CGI’s commitment and stated aims, not independent evidence of wider economic impact.

How the 2026 figures compare with earlier organiser reports

Leeds Digital’s sponsorship deck gives a retrospective for 2024: 202 festival events, more than 300 participating organisations and more than 500 September Festival speakers. It also reports 58 pieces of PR coverage with a potential audience of 31.6 million, 4 million social-media impressions, 70 insight and news features, and 12 Spotlight episodes. These are organiser-published promotional metrics, not independently audited counts; potential audience reach is not proof of readership or viewership.

The organiser’s 2025 retrospective says the festival began in 2016 with 56 events and later grew to 240 events in recent years, with attendance increasing from a few hundred to tens of thousands. It does not supply a comparable year-by-year attendance series or a consistent definition of attendance. The 2026 total of 220 reported events therefore should not be treated as a like-for-like trend comparison with every earlier edition.

Why two Leeds technology-economy figures should not be conflated

The organiser’s sponsorship page separately lists £1.3 billion in digital GVA, 9,000 digital companies in Leeds City Region, 102,000 people employed in the regional technology sector and nine universities with nearly 18,000 annual STEAM graduates. That page does not give a date or methodology beside these figures. Its £1.3 billion GVA figure differs in amount and stated scope from The Data City’s £1.67 billion figure for the Leeds technology economy reported by BusinessCloud. Without the underlying definitions and sources, the two values cannot be reconciled or used interchangeably.

What the reported numbers can—and cannot—tell you

  • They indicate reported event reach: BusinessCloud’s delegate, event, organiser, speaker-organisation and venue totals describe the 2026 programme’s reported scale.
  • They offer regional context: The Data City figures, as reported by BusinessCloud, suggest a substantial technology sector, but the reviewed article does not provide the underlying study methods.
  • They do not establish causation: The material does not show that the festival generated the cited GVA, sector growth, investment, jobs or business expansion.
  • They are not a personal-finance forecast: None of the cited figures establishes an individual attendee’s likely earnings, career prospects or financial return from attending.
