Laid Off With a Home-Loan EMI? What to Do When Savings Are Running Low

A reported layoff-and-EMI dilemma shows why borrowers should map monthly cash flow, approach lenders before missing payments, and weigh offers by take-home pay and certainty.

If a job loss puts your home-loan EMI at risk, contact your lenders before a payment is missed, calculate your household’s real monthly cash flow, and compare any job offers by take-home income and timing—not headline CTC alone. A Moneycontrol report published on October 3, 2026, describes an anonymous tech worker facing that dilemma; the reported figures illustrate the pressure, but do not reveal enough to prescribe a decision for that household.

What the report says—and what it cannot establish

Moneycontrol reports that an anonymous technology worker had earned around ₹40 lakh a year in CTC before being laid off about three months earlier. The worker reportedly had roughly two months of savings left for loan payments and everyday costs, a ₹2 crore home loan, a ₹30 lakh personal loan, car EMI payments, and a baby expected. The report also says the worker had received two startup offers at around ₹20 lakh CTC each. Moneycontrol’s report attributes the sentence, “I never thought that even after earning Rs 40L a year I could end up in this situation,” to the anonymous post.

These are reported details, not independently verified loan or employment records. The report does not state monthly EMIs, loan rates or remaining tenures, exact savings, severance, either offer’s pay structure, or the household’s other income and expenses. CTC is not monthly take-home pay. Without those details, it is not possible to calculate the family’s runway or determine whether accepting an offer, waiting for another role, or changing loan terms is best.

Build a month-by-month cash-flow picture first

Write down cash actually available and payments due for each month, beginning now and extending through the period in which income could realistically restart. Keep liquid savings separate from money that is inaccessible, earmarked, or needed for an immediate expense.

  • Income and job-transition money: current take-home income from every household member, final salary, severance or other confirmed payments, and the likely first payday from a new role.
  • Essential household costs: food, utilities, transport, insurance, childcare or medical costs, and any expected near-term family expenses.
  • Every debt payment: home-loan EMI, personal-loan payment, car EMI, credit-card dues, and other fixed commitments. Use statements or lender accounts for the actual due dates and amounts.
  • Available reserves: savings that can be accessed promptly, less amounts needed for unavoidable one-off costs.

This schedule makes the immediate shortfall visible: monthly cash available minus essential spending and required debt payments. Update it when an offer becomes firm or a lender provides written terms; do not treat an interview, verbal promise, or possible concession as cash already secured.

Contact each lender before a payment is missed

Tell each lender promptly that income has changed and explain what you can currently afford. Ask what formal options it may consider, what documents it needs, and how any proposal would affect the payment schedule and total cost. Contact the home-loan lender as well as lenders for other debts: a temporary reduction in one payment does not resolve a shortfall across the whole household budget.

RBI prudential guidance recognizes restructuring as a concession that a lender may grant in response to borrower financial difficulty; examples can involve changes to payment periods, instalments, or interest terms. This does not create an automatic entitlement or establish that a particular borrower qualifies. See the RBI prudential guidance and confirm the current rules and the lender’s applicable policy directly.

RBI recovery guidance says regulated entities should have a process to identify repayment difficulty, engage with borrowers, and guide them about recourse. That is a reason to raise the problem early and ask for the lender’s process—not a guarantee of approval or a particular outcome. The relevant RBI fair-practices material provides the regulatory context.

Get the full proposal in writing

Before agreeing to a change, ask the lender to set out the revised payment amount and dates, additional interest and fees, revised payoff date, credit-reporting treatment, and any implications for the collateral. Compare the near-term breathing room with the full repayment cost, and test whether the revised payment remains affordable on conservative income assumptions. Do not rely on a verbal estimate; the regulatory guidance does not itself approve a restructuring request.

Compare job offers by usable income and certainty

A lower CTC may still be preferable to an uncertain period without earnings, but the headline figures alone cannot answer that question. For each offer, compare:

  • Expected monthly take-home pay after deductions, and when the first salary would arrive.
  • Whether the offer is written and the start date is confirmed.
  • Benefits that change household out-of-pocket costs.
  • Commute, relocation, or other costs required to take the role.
  • Expected role stability and prospects for future income growth.
  • Whether the resulting household cash flow covers essentials and debt payments without exhausting reserves immediately.

Use the actual compensation breakdown and household budget, not a simple comparison of ₹40 lakh and ₹20 lakh CTC. The Moneycontrol report does not provide enough offer or budget details to say whether either reported offer would cover that household’s obligations.

Choose next steps based on the size and timing of the gap

  1. Today: confirm each loan’s amount due and date from lender statements, then make the monthly cash-flow schedule.
  2. Before any due date you may miss: contact each lender, disclose the income change, and ask about its formal hardship process and required documentation.
  3. When a lender responds: compare written terms by immediate relief, total added cost, revised payoff date, credit reporting, and collateral implications.
  4. When assessing work: compare confirmed start date and likely take-home pay against monthly essentials and debts, including costs of taking the role.
  5. As facts change: revise the schedule with confirmed income, lender terms, and upcoming household costs, rather than assuming a hoped-for job or concession will arrive.
