KPMG and Microsoft’s 2023 agreement expanded their global cloud and AI relationship. KPMG described a multibillion-dollar commitment to Microsoft cloud and AI services over five years, but did not disclose the exact amount. Separately, it said the collaboration could create more than US$12 billion in incremental growth opportunity for KPMG—a forward-looking estimate, not reported revenue. By June 2026, the companies had announced plans to extend the relationship to Copilot deployment across KPMG member firms and governance of AI agents.

What KPMG and Microsoft announced in 2023

On July 11, 2023, the companies announced an expansion of their global relationship covering workforce modernization, secure development and AI solutions for clients and industries. KPMG said it would make a multibillion-dollar commitment to Microsoft cloud and AI services over five years. The announcement gave no precise dollar figure for that commitment. KPMG’s announcement also described more than US$12 billion in potential incremental growth opportunity for KPMG. That figure was a projected opportunity, not a disclosure of realized revenue.

The agreement was an enterprise cloud and AI relationship expansion, not the launch of a consumer AI product. KPMG said the technologies would support its global workforce of 265,000 and noted more than 2,500 joint KPMG–Microsoft clients; both figures refer to the 2023 announcement, not necessarily current totals.

Where the companies said they would apply AI and cloud tools

Audit

KPMG planned to integrate analytics, AI and Azure Cognitive Services into its KPMG Clara audit platform. The companies also described using Microsoft Fabric to connect directly to client data and support more real-time audits. In its June 2026 announcement, Microsoft said AI capabilities would continue to be integrated into Clara.

Tax

The 2023 announcement described integrating Azure OpenAI Service and Microsoft Fabric with KPMG Digital Gateway. Planned capabilities included a virtual assistant for tax professionals and tools to analyze complex tax laws. The companies also described a co-developed environmental, social and governance (ESG) solution to analyze data patterns and draft tax transparency reports.

Advisory and client solutions

KPMG and Microsoft described an AI-enabled application-development and knowledge platform on Azure. In 2026, Microsoft said KPMG firms would help clients deploy agents with governance, security and controls, and move from pilots toward broader deployment.

Sustainability data

The companies said they would help clients bring sustainability data together and support sustainability commitments, building on tools including the KPMG Circularity Tracker. This describes a service area; the agreement itself does not guarantee sustainability results.

What changed in the June 2026 expansion

On June 9, 2026, Microsoft announced a further expansion of the relationship. It said KPMG member firms would deploy Microsoft 365 Copilot across a global workforce of more than 276,000 professionals. Microsoft also said KPMG would use Microsoft Agent 365 to manage, monitor and secure AI agents, and described KPMG Workbench, built on Azure AI Foundry, as coordinating multiple agents across KPMG client-service platforms. These are announced deployment and platform plans; the release does not establish measured outcomes across every member firm.

The expansion puts two different needs in view: Copilot for employee productivity, and tools for governing agents that carry out work across business processes. Microsoft said Agent 365 would provide centralized visibility and control for agents and enhance KPMG’s Trusted AI framework. Governance, ownership, risk, compliance and lifecycle management were presented as prerequisites for scaling enterprise AI, rather than optional add-ons.

What the examples do—and do not—show

A March 2024 Microsoft customer story described KPMG Australia’s ESG Comply AI proof of concept. Built with Azure OpenAI Service, Azure AI Search and Copilot for Microsoft 365, it used expert-provided prompts and client documents to compare materials with ESG standards, flag full, partial or absent compliance, and help experts summarize findings and draft communications. KPMG described expert oversight as central: the tool was intended to speed assessment, not replace professional judgment. The story said testing and broader rollout were planned at that time; it does not establish that the 2024 plan resulted in current deployment. Microsoft’s 2024 customer story includes that account.

A later Microsoft customer story describes staff using Copilot Studio and Azure AI Foundry to create agents, including an onboarding assistant and a strategy-document comparison agent. It gives KPMG Workbench a workforce figure of 280,000 and says it covers 95 member organizations; those figures have different framing from Microsoft’s June 2026 release and should not be substituted for its dated figure of more than 276,000. The same story reports that an onboarding agent reduced follow-up calls by 20% and an ESG agent reduced compliance timelines by 18 months. These are vendor-reported examples, and the story does not provide an independent evaluation method; they should not be read as typical or independently verified results. Microsoft’s customer-story page presents the examples.

What the agreement means for clients

For clients, the announced direction is a combination of Microsoft’s cloud and AI platform with KPMG’s audit, tax, advisory and industry expertise. The work ranges from internal productivity tools to client-facing applications and agent deployment. In areas such as audit and tax, the stated aim is to help professionals analyze information and work with complex material; the examples do not establish that AI replaces professional accountability or judgment.
