Re:

Koo Aimed to Overtake Twitter in India. It Never Proved It Did.

Koo’s 2022 ambition to overtake Twitter in India was never independently verified. Its downloads, active-user figures and 2024 shutdown tell a more qualified story.

In April 2022, Koo said it aimed to overtake Twitter’s user base in India within roughly a year. The Indian multilingual microblogging startup pointed to rapid growth, about 30 million downloads and a goal of more than 100 million users by the end of 2022. Those were company claims and a forecast—not proof that Koo had surpassed Twitter. Koo shut down on July 3, 2024.

What Koo said it would achieve

Koo co-founder and CEO Aprameya Radhakrishna said in April 2022 that the platform intended to overtake Twitter in India within a year. The goal was India-specific, not a claim about global users. Koo cited approximately 30 million downloads and projected more than 100 million users by the end of 2022; it also said its user base had grown tenfold in the prior 12 months. These figures and the projection were company-reported. Gadgets360’s report on the announcement attributed the plan to Radhakrishna.

The announcement came as Elon Musk’s proposed acquisition of Twitter drew attention and Twitter faced disputes with Indian authorities. Koo presented those developments, alongside its domestic identity and local-language focus, as an opening for an Indian competitor.

What Koo was—and what its numbers meant

Launched in March 2020, Koo was an Indian microblogging platform built around publishing and interacting in multiple Indian languages. That focus gave it a distinct proposition for people who did not want English to be the default. Moneycontrol’s company profile covers its launch and ambitions.

An academic study of Koo’s early network analyzed more than four million users, 163 million follower-following relationships and activity across 12 languages. This is evidence of a substantial multilingual network at the time studied, not a current user count or a complete measure of Koo’s audience. See “What’s Kooking? Characterizing India’s Emerging Social Network, Koo”.

Different audience measures answer different questions. A download is an installation, not proof that someone created an account or kept using the service. A registered account may be inactive. Monthly and daily active users measure activity within a specified period, while engagement and retention indicate whether people return and participate. Koo’s reported downloads, user totals and active-user figures should therefore not be treated as interchangeable.

Projected users More than 100 million by the end of 2022, according to Koo A target, not a verified result. Gadgets360

Why Koo attracted attention in India

Koo’s case rested on more than a download count. It offered local-language publishing and discovery, and it emerged during a period when relations between Twitter and the Indian government were strained. Indian ministers and government departments promoted Koo, helping the service gain visibility. That political and public attention helps explain a burst of interest; it does not by itself show that users developed lasting habits on the platform. TechCrunch’s 2021 reporting and Rest of World’s account of Koo’s rise and decline describe that context.

A domestic identity and prominent accounts can help a new network attract users, but they are not substitutes for a broad, returning audience. Established platforms benefit from network effects: people have a reason to stay where their friends, public figures, journalists, creators and organizations already post. Koo’s language focus differentiated it, while Twitter had an established network and international reach.

Could Koo’s claim be verified?

The public figures available do not establish that Koo overtook Twitter in India. The central difficulty is comparability: the 2022 Koo announcement cited downloads and a projected user total, whereas a serious comparison needs active audiences measured for the same country and period using consistent definitions. The available evidence does not supply an independently verified, like-for-like Twitter-versus-Koo measurement for that period.

  • Compare India with India. A global download total cannot establish a lead in the Indian audience.
  • Compare the same metric. Downloads, registered accounts, MAUs and DAUs are different measures.
  • Compare the same period. A figure from one year cannot settle a claim about another without evidence of what changed.
  • Check who counted and how. Company-reported totals and third-party estimates have different evidentiary weight; methodology matters.
  • Look beyond account totals. Posting, reading, repeat visits and retention help show whether growth became durable use.

At Koo’s shutdown, its founders said the company had been “just months away” from beating Twitter in India in 2022. That is a retrospective statement from the founders, not an independently confirmed audience comparison. They also reported more than 9,000 prominent or “VIP” users at the platform’s peak, but the presence of well-known accounts does not establish the size or activity of the general audience. The Economic Times reported the founders’ figures and account.

Why growth did not secure Koo’s future

Building a social network requires more than attracting users. The service must keep them engaged while paying for infrastructure and content moderation, and it needs a sustainable way to fund operations. Koo raised more than $60 million, according to TechCrunch’s shutdown report, but later coverage described difficulty generating revenue and sustaining operating costs. Business Standard’s analysis discusses those business pressures.

In July 2024, Koo’s founders said acquisition and partnership discussions with larger internet companies, conglomerates and media groups had failed. They cited the funding climate, the cost of operating a social platform and the challenge of finding a partner willing to manage user-generated content. Koo ceased operations on July 3, 2024. The founders’ reported peak of about 2.1 million DAUs and 10 million MAUs indicates meaningful activity, but it neither verifies the 2022 claim nor explains the shutdown on its own. TechCrunch covered the closure; LinkedIn News reported the shutdown date.

What Koo’s story shows about platform scale

Koo had a genuine product distinction and attracted a sizeable audience, but the numbers used to promote growth did not demonstrate that it had surpassed Twitter in India. Political attention can accelerate discovery, and prominent users can make a service look influential; durable scale depends on repeated participation across the wider audience. It also depends on a business model capable of supporting moderation, infrastructure and continued operations. Koo’s closure makes the distinction concrete: audience traction and a competitive milestone are not the same as a sustainable platform.
