“Kingston Factory Tour in Shanghai, China” is a genuine Hardware Secrets report published July 25, 2005. It records an invited media visit to Kingston’s memory-module plant in Shanghai’s Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone—not a current sightseeing attraction or a guide to booking a public tour. The article, which displayed a February 24, 2023 update date, follows printed-circuit-board panels through automated surface-mount assembly, testing, packaging and shipment preparation.
What the original article is
The report was written by Mike S. and divided into “Introduction,” “Memory Module Manufacturing” and “Testing.” You can read the primary article at Hardware Secrets. A contemporary listing also identifies the exact title and 2005 publication as a factory-tour story (DVHardware).
Its subject is manufacturing, not tourism. The visit appears to have been arranged for journalists or invited media. Nothing in the report establishes ticketing, visitor hours, a public booking system or ordinary tourist access.
Where the plant was and what the 2005 report measured
The factory was described as being in Shanghai’s Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone. The article discussed the zone’s export-tax treatment, including a 17% VAT reference, as part of the rules understood at the time. Those details are historical context, not current Chinese tax advice.

The report listed monthly memory-module capacities for four Kingston facilities:
| Facility | Monthly capacity stated in the 2005 report |
|---|---|
| Penang, Malaysia | 500,000 modules |
| Hsinchu, Taiwan | 1.7 million modules |
| Fountain Valley, California | 800,000 modules |
| Shanghai, China | 2.5 million modules |
On that dated comparison, Shanghai was the largest of the four. The same report said the plant had eight surface-mount-technology (SMT) insertion lines and described a new factory planned for 12 SMT lines with a target capacity of 5 million modules per month. These are 2005-era figures and projections, not evidence of current capacity.
Kingston said multiple factories reduced the effect of a disaster or fire at any one site. That is the company’s explanation in the report, not a verified description of its present supply-chain policy.

What Kingston was assembling
A memory-module plant is not the same thing as a semiconductor wafer fab. The report says Kingston designed modules at its Fountain Valley headquarters, bought wafers or packaged memory chips from semiconductor manufacturers, and also used third-party chips. Hynix-marked chips were reportedly visible on the line during the visit. The Shanghai operation described was therefore module assembly and testing, not fabrication of memory silicon from raw wafers.

How a RAM module moved through the line
1. Materials and panelized boards
The line received empty printed-circuit-board (PCB) panels, memory chips and other surface-mount components. Several modules were made on one panel; an illustrated panel contained eight modules. Keeping the panel intact lets placement and soldering equipment process multiple boards in one pass. The panel was separated only later (manufacturing section).

2. Surface-mount placement
Pick-and-place equipment positioned components on the panel. Unlike board assemblies that require extensive through-hole connector or capacitor insertion, the memory-module line shown was centered on SMT operations.
3. Soldering and visual inspection
The populated panel passed through a soldering oven. Operators then inspected the assembly for visible soldering defects. Automation handled placement and heating, but people remained part of the quality check.
4. Labeling and depanelization
The panel was labeled and cut into individual modules. The report’s photographs show the same machine performing labeling and cutting before the separate boards proceeded to testing.

It may take some time for initial recognition, but it will happen.
What a later account adds—and why it must stay separate
A Kingston-published account reproduced by Sudo Null in 2015 describes a later view of the Shanghai operation (account reproduced by Sudo Null). It says the facility was built in 2001, operated three eight-hour shifts, had 18 production lines and storage exceeding 1,000 pallets. It also mentions memory and flash products, elevated- and low-temperature testing, memory tests lasting 11 or 23 hours, server-SSD tests lasting up to a week, and additional manual inspection for at least 10% of finished products.
Those statements cannot simply be merged with the 2005 report. The increase from eight SMT lines in 2005 to 18 production lines in the 2015 account might reflect expansion, a broader product mix or different definitions of “line.” The available sources do not establish a continuous, audited timeline, nor do they verify that every product followed the same test duration or inspection percentage.
Reports about Kingston’s Hsinchu or other Taiwan facilities can illustrate similar industry practices, but they are not proof of what happened in Shanghai. For comparison only, see Bjorn3D’s Hsinchu/Taiwan coverage and TweakTown’s Taiwan SSD report.
Can you visit the Shanghai factory today?
The documented evidence confirms an invited media visit. It does not confirm that Kingston operates the site as a public attraction, that the facility still has the same status or product mix, or that walk-in visitors can enter. The old report supplies no current address details for visitors, opening hours, ticket prices or booking procedure.
Recommended Free Tools
If a visit matters to your plans, obtain current written confirmation from Kingston or the relevant industrial-park authority before making travel arrangements. Do not treat a search result using the words “factory tour” as proof of public access.
What remains useful about the tour
- It documents mid-2000s Shanghai electronics assembly at a specific plant and date.
- It shows why panelized PCBs improve throughput before boards are cut apart.
- It demonstrates a layered quality process: automated screening, computer-based functional testing and human verification.
- It clarifies the difference between assembling branded memory modules and manufacturing semiconductor wafers.
- It provides dated capacity and line-count snapshots without pretending they describe Kingston in 2026.
What the sources cannot establish now
- The Shanghai facility’s present-day ownership, operating status or capacity.
- Whether Kingston currently manufactures a particular DRAM, flash or SSD product there.
- Current visitor access, tour schedules or travel arrangements.
- Whether the later 18-line description refers to the same production area, an expansion or a broader definition of production lines.
The Bottom Line
The Kingston Shanghai tour was real, but it was a 2005 technology-report visit to a memory-module assembly plant—not evidence of a public tourist attraction or current factory specifications.
