A Reddit user says a Best Buy order for an ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 5080 arrived with four rocks inside the graphics-card box instead of the approximately $1,200 GPU. The buyer says the retail box was shipped without an outer carton, appeared tampered with, and that Best Buy first promised a replacement before later denying a replacement or refund. Those are serious allegations, but the available public evidence does not establish who substituted the contents or how the dispute ended.
What the shopper says happened
The account comes from a Reddit post by user u/GnarDead, later reported by HotHardware. According to the post, the buyer placed the order on November 25, 2025, and received it on November 28.
| Date | Reported event |
|---|---|
| November 25, 2025 | The buyer says an ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 5080 was ordered from Best Buy for about $1,200. |
| November 28, 2025 | The package allegedly arrived with four bubble-wrapped rocks inside the GPU’s retail box. |
| Within about an hour of delivery | The buyer says customer service initially said a replacement would be sent. |
| December 2, 2025 | The buyer says Best Buy emailed that it would not replace or refund the purchase after an investigation. |
| December 3, 2025 | HotHardware published its report on the allegation. |
The buyer also said shipping labels were attached directly to the recognizable retail package, with no plain outer carton. The retail seal reportedly looked tampered with. The original post and its accompanying images or video are the primary public record of those claims: Reddit post. HotHardware’s account is available here.
The buyer described the incident as both financially damaging and distressing. The exact SKU, order total including tax and shipping, carrier, fulfillment location and package weight are not publicly established in the available coverage.

What is documented—and what is not
Directly documented by the public record
- A Reddit user made the account, including the order and delivery dates.
- The user described four rocks, a tampered-looking seal and labels on the retail box.
- The user said Best Buy first indicated a replacement and later denied both replacement and refund.
- HotHardware reported the same allegations on December 3, 2025.
Still unverified
- Where the graphics card allegedly disappeared from the package.
- Whether the substitution occurred during a return, at a warehouse, in transit or elsewhere.
- Best Buy’s internal evidence or investigation findings.
- The carrier’s package-weight records, damage scans or handling notes.
- Whether the buyer ultimately received money or a replacement.
No public Best Buy statement or investigative document confirming the details was identified in the available coverage. The careful description is therefore that a shopper claims Best Buy delivered stones—not that Best Buy has been proven to have shipped them.
How could a substitution happen?
Several explanations are possible. None is established in this case, and they should not be treated as findings.
Tampering before delivery
Someone could have removed the GPU, inserted objects of roughly similar weight, resealed the package and returned it to the carrier stream. Carrier records, exterior photographs, tape patterns, seal damage and package-weight changes would be relevant to that theory.

Fraudulent return or inventory substitution
A previous purchaser might theoretically return a box containing rocks or another object, after which the package could re-enter inventory without the substitution being detected. Fraudulent returns are a known type of retail-control risk, but there is no evidence proving that happened here.

Warehouse or fulfillment error
A returned or damaged unit could have been incorrectly processed and shipped as new. Again, the available sources do not identify a warehouse, employee or process failure.
Carrier or delivery tampering
Shipping an expensive GPU in its identifiable retail box could make it easier to spot and target. That packaging choice may increase exposure, but it does not show that a driver or carrier employee was responsible.

Customer-fraud allegations
Some commenters accused the buyer of substituting the rocks. The buyer denied doing so. Commenter speculation is not evidence, and a retailer’s denial of a claim does not by itself prove customer fraud.
Why the packaging detail matters
A retail box sent without a second shipping carton is immediately recognizable. In a high-value graphics-card shipment, that can create several practical problems:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- The product is easier to identify during transport.
- Labels, sorting equipment and handling can damage the retail packaging.
- A person attempting to access the box does not have to open a separate outer carton.
- If the retail seal is already compromised, it becomes harder for the recipient to show when the package was opened.
- There may be less packaging evidence to preserve for a carrier or retailer investigation.
This account describes one shipment. It does not establish a universal Best Buy policy for graphics cards, nor does a label on a retail box prove theft.

Why an RTX 5080 order attracts attention
The RTX 5080 is a premium desktop GPU with substantial resale value. NVIDIA announced the Founders Edition at a $999 U.S. starting price, with availability beginning January 30, 2025, in its announcement. A Best Buy product-page snapshot showed the Founders Edition at $999.99, sold by Best Buy, and marked sold out when crawled; availability changes and that snapshot is not proof of stock on a later date: Best Buy listing.
Board-partner models such as the ASUS TUF version can cost more than the Founders Edition starting price. The buyer’s approximately $1,200 figure should be checked against the receipt because model, seller, taxes, shipping and timing all affect the final amount.

Before opening
- Photograph or video every side of the package, including labels, tracking information, tape, seals, tears and serial-number stickers.
- If the parcel is visibly open or badly damaged, ask the carrier to note the condition or refuse delivery where that option exists.
- Keep all packaging and compare the recorded weight with the listing or shipping record if available.
During opening
- Start a continuous video before cutting the package.
- Show the unopened condition, then film the contents, manuals, accessories, protective materials and any apparent substitution.
- Do not rearrange, discard or clean up the contents before documenting them.
- Photograph the box and every serial number.
An unboxing video records the package’s condition when you opened it, but it cannot by itself identify when or where a substitution occurred or guarantee a refund.

Immediately afterward
- Contact the retailer through an official channel and request a case number and written explanation.
- Notify the carrier if theft, opening or damage is suspected.
- Preserve the order confirmation, delivery scans, photos, video, chats and emails.
- Ask your card issuer promptly about its dispute process; approval is not automatic and documentation may be required.
- File a police report when the value and circumstances justify it.
- Do not return the package without written authorization and proof of exactly what is being sent.
Would store pickup be safer?
Pickup or delivery to a store can reduce porch-theft exposure and may let you inspect the package near an employee. It does not eliminate substitution risk, and store procedures vary. Inspect the package promptly, open it where permitted and preserve the packaging even after a store handoff.
How to reduce risk when buying a GPU
- Check the listing’s “Sold by” and “Shipped by” fields before paying, especially on marketplace pages.
- Prefer a direct retailer or a manufacturer-authorized seller when the price difference is small.
- Use a payment method with meaningful purchase-dispute protections and understand its deadlines.
- Avoid unusually cheap listings with unclear return rules or seller histories.
- Keep the carton, labels and inserts until the card is installed, tested and outside the return period.
- For in-store purchases, inspect the seal and model information before leaving.
The bottom line on the RTX 5080 rocks claim
The buyer’s Reddit account and HotHardware’s report document an allegation involving four rocks, apparent package tampering and a disputed Best Buy response. They do not establish whether the substitution occurred in a return stream, warehouse, carrier network or elsewhere, and they do not publicly confirm the final resolution. Treat the incident as a warning to document high-value deliveries carefully—not as proof that Best Buy definitively shipped rocks or that any particular person was responsible.
