U.S. consumer prices rose 3.0% over the 12 months ending in January 2025, while the egg index jumped 15.2% in that single month. Those are different time periods: overall CPI also rose 0.5% from December, and eggs were up 53.0% over the year. The figures come from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ release published February 12, 2025, and describe historical data—not the current inflation rate.
What the January 2025 inflation figures mean
The headline 3.0% figure is the change in the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) over the 12 months ending in January 2025. It does not mean prices rose 3% during January alone. On a seasonally adjusted basis, the all-items index increased 0.5% from December 2024 to January 2025. The BLS reported that the annual increase had been 2.9% for the 12 months ending in December.
The CPI measures changes in prices consumers pay for goods and services. CPI-U covers urban consumers and combines sampled prices into a U.S. city average; it is not a measure of the price level in any one city or a prediction of what a particular household paid. Local prices and personal spending patterns can differ from the index. See the BLS January 2025 CPI news release for the agency’s figures and methodology notes.
How much did egg prices rise?
The BLS egg index rose 15.2% between December 2024 and January 2025—the largest monthly increase since June 2015. Over the 12 months ending in January, the egg index rose 53.0%. The 15.2% and 53.0% figures are both index changes, but one covers a month and the other a year; neither guarantees that the price of eggs at a particular store changed by the same amount.

#1 Best Overall
Eggs had an outsized role in the grocery category’s monthly increase: BLS said they accounted for about two thirds of January’s rise in the food-at-home index. That index, which covers food purchased for consumption at home, increased 0.5% for the month and 1.9% over the year. This does not mean eggs accounted for two thirds of overall inflation. The release documents the price change but does not establish its cause.
January CPI at a glance
| Measure | Change from December 2024 to January 2025 | Change over the 12 months ending January 2025 |

| Core CPI-U (excluding food and energy) | 0.4% (seasonally adjusted) | 3.3% |
| Food at home | 0.5% | 1.9% |
| Eggs | 15.2% | 53.0% |
All figures are from the BLS January 2025 release. Monthly figures are seasonally adjusted CPI changes; the annual figures compare January 2025 with January 2024. Core CPI excludes food and energy, while headline CPI includes them.

Why the headline and core rates differ
Headline CPI-U rose 0.5% in January and 3.0% over the year. Core CPI-U, which removes food and energy, rose 0.4% for the month and 3.3% over the year. The measures answer different questions: headline CPI includes the full basket, while core CPI shows price changes without those two categories. The lower monthly headline increase does not negate the higher annual core rate; their time periods and coverage differ.

CPI tracks a broad basket of goods and services, whereas the egg index reflects one item category. A sharp change in one category can make groceries more expensive without translating into an equally large change in the overall index. In January, eggs contributed substantially to the increase in food at home, but the headline CPI-U’s monthly rise was 0.5%, not 15.2%.

The BLS release does not explain why the egg index rose. It supports the measured increase and its contribution to food-at-home inflation, but not a specific causal explanation. The figures also cannot tell an individual shopper what eggs cost locally or how much their own grocery bill changed.
