James Howells has stopped pursuing the physical recovery of a hard drive he believes was discarded at Newport’s Docksway landfill. He has not said that he is abandoning every claim relating to the Bitcoin associated with it, and the drive has not been recovered. The often-repeated $742 million figure is a headline estimate, not a verified current value or money Howells received.
What Howells stopped—and what he says he has not
In a statement reported by The Block on August 5, 2025, Howells said he was no longer pursuing the purchase of the landfill, excavation or remediation, or dialogue with Newport City Council. He said: “I am no longer pursuing the purchase of the landfill, I am no longer pursuing excavation or remediation, I am no longer pursuing dialogue with the council or its representatives.”
That statement describes an end to the physical campaign at the landfill. It does not establish that he gave up every claim concerning the Bitcoin, nor does it mean the coins were found. A Daily Galaxy status report published August 12, 2026, said the hard drive had still not been recovered and the physical hunt remained over.
How the hard drive came to be associated with the landfill
Accounts of the loss place it in 2013: Howells reportedly said a hard drive containing access information for a Bitcoin wallet was mistakenly discarded and ended up at Docksway landfill in Newport, Wales. The drive’s presence there is his belief, not a confirmed recovery or independently established location. The hard drive would have held access information; it was not itself the Bitcoin.
#1 Best Overall
- SATA DRIVES ONLY — 2.5in & 3.5in: Works with SATA I/II/III hard drives and SSDs. Does NOT support IDE/PATA, M.2 NVMe, M.2 SATA, SAS, or drives already in a USB enclosure. Check your drive's connector before ordering — a bare SATA drive has a wide flat L-shaped edge connector, not a ribbon cable or a small M.2 gold-finger card.
- USB TYPE-A HOST CABLE — NOT A USB-C PORT: The included host cable ends in USB Type-A and plugs into a USB 3.0 Type-A port. If your computer has only USB-C ports, you will need a USB-C to USB-A adapter, which is not included. For stable operation plug directly into the computer — USB hubs and USB 2.0 ports may cause intermittent disconnections.
- REAL-WORLD SPEED, NOT INTERFACE MATH: USB 3.0 with UASP support (UASP-capable host required). Typical mechanical HDD transfer speeds are 100-160 MB/s, which is the drive's own limit, not the port's; SSD speeds vary up to the USB interface maximum. Backward compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1.
- 12V POWER ADAPTER INCLUDED — REQUIRED FOR 3.5in DRIVES: A 12V/2A AC power adapter is in the box and a wall outlet is needed. 3.5in HDDs cannot run on USB power alone — without the adapter the drive will fail to spin up or drop out during use. 2.5in drives are generally bus-powered, but the adapter is recommended for stability.
- PLUG AND PLAY, TOOL-FREE, HOT-SWAP: No drivers on Windows 10/11, macOS, or Linux. Lay-flat bay accepts a bare drive without tools, swaps without rebooting, and an LED shows power and activity. Note: S.M.A.R.T. diagnostics are not passed through the USB bridge, and on macOS a drive may need remounting after sleep. Drive not included.
Reports differ on the amount associated with the wallet. Early reporting cited 7,500 BTC, while later accounts commonly use 8,000 BTC. Neither figure is independently verified by the reporting summarized here, so the amount should be treated as reported rather than certain.
Why the court case did not lead to a search
Howells spent years seeking permission to search the site and pursued a court claim. In January 2025, the High Court struck out his claim. Information Age, reporting on January 13, quoted Judge Keyser KC as saying: “I also consider that the claim would have no realistic prospect of succeeding if it went to trial.”

Coverage reported that Newport City Council argued it owned the discarded physical drive and that the judge accepted that argument. That concerns the drive and the court claim; it is not evidence that the Bitcoin was recovered, transferred, or made accessible. Howells had told LBC he wanted to “use the case as leverage” to bring the council to the negotiating table, but that stated strategy did not change the court outcome.
What the $742 million figure does—and does not—mean
The $742 million figure in the original headline is not established by the cited reporting as a current valuation. Dollar estimates for a claimed BTC amount change with Bitcoin’s market price, the date used, and whether the assumed holding is 7,500 or 8,000 BTC. A reported estimate is not cash received, a court valuation, or proof that the wallet’s keys remain usable.

What the Ceiniog proposal means
In August 2025, Howells described a proposed Ceiniog tokenization project as a pivot after ending the landfill effort. This is a reported proposal and his description of it—not verification that a token launched, that it is backed by the missing Bitcoin, or that holding one would provide access to the wallet. The physical search, his asserted continuing claim, the dismissed court case, and the proposed token project are separate developments.
