WIRED’s live blog is most useful as a screened shortlist, not a guarantee that every discount is still available. The coverage followed Amazon’s two-day Big Deal Days event (often called Prime Day), using products its reviewers had actually tested. Historical examples included the second-generation Kindle Scribe at $250 (listed price $400), JLab Go Pop ANC earbuds at $21, and Petcube Play 2 at $60. Those figures were tied to that event and must be rechecked before you buy.
What WIRED’s live blog covered
WIRED said it tracked the sale from its opening through the final hours, posting through midnight on the second day while highlighting deals, trends and commentary on the start of holiday shopping. A 15-person WIRED Reviews team spent about a month reviewing spreadsheets and emails and consulting its buying guides. The team said it emphasized products members had used and tested, rather than simply ranking the largest percentage discounts.

How to decide whether a deal is worth buying
1. Check the live total, not the crossed-out price
Open the current listing and verify the selling price, taxes, delivery charges, seller, return terms and any coupon that must be selected. Compare the final total with prices from other reputable retailers. A discount percentage based on a manufacturer’s suggested price is not the same as savings against the product’s normal street price.
2. Match the feature set to a real use
The Scribe makes sense when reading and handwriting are the goal; it is a poor fit if you mainly need a general-purpose tablet. JLab’s earbuds target basic listening and limited noise cancellation, not premium isolation. Petcube’s headline hardware is useful without a subscription, but budget for the Care plan if you need its additional features.

3. Account for recurring and replacement costs
- For Petcube, determine whether the features you want sit behind the paid Care plan.
- For earbuds, include replacement tips, warranty coverage and the cost of replacing a lost pair.
- For charging stands and power banks, check whether your existing cables and devices support the advertised charging standard.
- For appliances and maintenance kits, include consumables and storage space in the decision.
4. Use evidence, but verify the exact model
WIRED’s testing history is a useful filter, yet product names can hide differences in storage, connectivity, ports or bundled accessories. Confirm the generation, capacity and included equipment on the current listing before checkout.
5. Protect the budget
Set a spending limit before browsing, use cash already allocated for the purchase and avoid adding items solely to reach a shipping threshold. A discount is not a saving if it creates credit-card interest or displaces an essential bill.

Quick answers for common Prime Day searches
Is the Kindle Scribe deal good?
The $250 figure was a compelling historical price for the 16-GB second-generation Scribe, especially for someone who will use both e-reading and annotation. Whether a current offer is good depends on today’s total price and whether you need those functions; recheck the live listing rather than relying on the old $250 number.
What are the best cheap earbuds in the coverage?
The JLab Go Pop ANC was the clearest budget-earbud recommendation: WIRED credited it with good sound, some noise cancellation, basic EQ and usable touch controls. Expect a budget feature set, not the isolation or refinement of higher-end models.

Is Petcube Play 2 worth it?
It can be worthwhile for a pet owner who wants 1080p video, night vision, a wide view, two-way audio and built-in laser play in one camera. Calculate the ongoing Care-plan cost first if you need features beyond the core camera.
