No—not in the latest worldwide snapshot available. StatCounter estimated Windows 11 at 68.6% of desktop Windows-version usage and Windows 10 at 30.14% worldwide in August 2026. That single monthly reading does not show Windows 10 overtaking Windows 11 or prove a sustained trend. It also measures web usage, not the number of PCs people own.
What the August 2026 figures say
StatCounter’s August 2026 estimate puts Windows 11 ahead of Windows 10 in both reported geographies:
| Geography | Windows 11 | Windows 10 | What the denominator represents |
|---|---|---|---|
| Worldwide | 68.6% | 30.14% | Desktop Windows-version usage estimated from page views |
| United States | 75.37% | 23.67% | Desktop Windows-version usage estimated from page views |
The worldwide and US numbers are not interchangeable. They cover different geographies, and neither is a share of all operating systems, all computers in service, PC shipments, sales, or Microsoft’s user count.
Why one month cannot establish a reversal
A monthly estimate is a snapshot. It cannot show whether Windows 11 has been losing share over several months, whether Windows 10 gained users after support ended, or what caused any movement. A dated time series would be needed to establish a durable rise or fall.

What StatCounter is—and is not—measuring
StatCounter’s Global Stats derive from page views on member websites and are intended to describe internet-usage trends. A computer that does not browse the web, a device that visits sites outside the measured network, or multiple devices used by one person can affect how usage share relates to the installed base. Treat the percentages as an estimate of observed desktop Windows-version activity, not a census of PCs.
Did Windows 10 gain users after end of life?
There is no evidence in the August snapshot to answer that causal question. Windows 10 still represented 30.14% of worldwide desktop Windows-version usage and 23.67% in the US, but those figures do not reveal whether its share rose after support ended, how many people remained on it beforehand, or why anyone continued using it. They also do not establish that users rolled back from Windows 11.

What changed when Windows 10 support ended?
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says free software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes ended on that date. The operating system may continue to boot and run, but normal use after that deadline does not restore the protections or support that ended.
Consumer Extended Security Updates
Microsoft’s support information says consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) provide important security updates until October 13, 2026. Eligibility, enrollment conditions, and the exact coverage should be checked on Microsoft’s current support guidance before relying on ESU. ESU is time-limited security coverage, not a return to ordinary Windows 10 support.

Can you still use Windows 10?
Yes, a Windows 10 computer can still be used after October 14, 2025, but it is outside standard free support. That creates a practical decision rather than an automatic shutdown: confirm whether the device can move to a supported Windows release, assess the security implications of staying put, and plan a supported path before any ESU coverage ends.
Does a PC have to be replaced if it cannot run Windows 11?
Not every Windows 10 computer must be replaced immediately. Microsoft’s guidance is conditional: If your devices don’t meet the technical requirements to run a more current release of Windows, we recommend that you replace the device with one that supports Windows 11.
That is a recommendation for devices that fail the requirements, not a mandate to replace every Windows 10 PC.

A financially sensible decision sequence
- Check compatibility first. Determine whether the existing hardware meets Windows 11’s requirements using Microsoft’s current compatibility guidance. Do not assume age alone decides eligibility.
- Compare supported options. If an upgrade is available, compare its security coverage and practical usability with keeping the current installation. If the hardware is ineligible, compare the cost of continued risk or temporary ESU with a Windows 11-compatible replacement.
- Protect your data before changing systems. Make a verified backup of important files and confirm that essential applications, peripherals, and licenses will work on the chosen system.
- Set a deadline. If you remain on Windows 10 temporarily, document when ESU coverage or your own risk tolerance ends so the temporary choice does not become an unplanned long-term exposure.
How to interpret the headline claim
The claim that Windows 11 is “losing market share” is not supported by the retrieved August 2026 worldwide estimate. The data show Windows 11 with the larger observed share, while Windows 10 remains substantial. A responsible headline must identify the month, geography, desktop-Windows scope, and usage-share methodology, and must avoid presenting one snapshot as proof of a trend.

Windows 10’s end of support is real, but the August 2026 StatCounter snapshot does not show Windows 11 losing share to it. Use the figures as web-usage estimates, check your PC’s compatibility, and choose between an upgrade, time-limited ESU, or a supported replacement based on security and total cost.
