Verdict: If you can find a new 128GB Wi‑Fi iPad mini with A17 Pro for $399, it is one of the strongest deals on a premium compact tablet—but it is not the best tablet deal for everyone. The price has appeared in 2026 promotions, but the available deal reports do not establish that it is still live today. Buy it for portability and performance; choose the standard iPad if you want a larger screen for less.
What the $399 deal includes
The deal is for the seventh-generation iPad mini, marketed as the iPad mini with A17 Pro: 128GB of storage and Wi‑Fi connectivity. It is not a cellular model, and $399 should mean a new retail unit—not refurbished, open-box, used, or tied to a carrier plan. Apple’s purchase page identifies the model and configuration: Apple’s 128GB Wi‑Fi iPad mini purchase page.
Macworld and NBC Select reported the 128GB Wi‑Fi version at about $399 during 2026 promotions, with retailer prices reported at $399 or $399.99. Those reports do not confirm a live offer today, nor do they establish a single current retailer, color, seller, or checkout condition. Check the listing and final cart price before buying; tax, shipping, membership requirements, coupons, and marketplace sellers can change the real cost.
Why $399 is a strong price—but not a record
Deal coverage compared $399 with an earlier $499 price, making the sale roughly $100 off that reference price. Macworld also reported a prior low of $349 for the 128GB model, so $399 is a strong sale price, not a substantiated all-time low. Macworld’s $399 deal report and 2026 iPad deal comparison document those price points.
#1 Best Overall
For someone who wants a high-performance tablet small enough for comfortable handheld use, $399 is compelling. But “best” depends on what you value: the mini stands out among compact tablets, while a larger iPad can deliver more screen for less. The $399 offer is best understood as a buy-now threshold for people who specifically want the mini, not proof that it is the best-value tablet overall.
What makes the mini worth considering
Compact size with a powerful chip
The A17 Pro gives the mini a performance-oriented foundation in an 8.3-inch design. That combination suits reading, travel, casual gaming, browsing, and handheld use better than a larger tablet does for some people. Its appeal is the mix of strong performance and small dimensions—not screen area per dollar.

Notes and drawing with Pencil Pro
The iPad mini supports Apple Pencil Pro, which is sold separately. That makes it a candidate for handwritten notes, sketching, and marking up documents when a compact canvas is an advantage. See Apple’s Apple Pencil Pro page for the accessory. If you only plan to read, stream, and browse, there is little reason to add a stylus to the bill.
Apple ecosystem and software features
Apple markets the model as supporting Apple Intelligence, but that label does not guarantee that every feature is available to every owner: availability can depend on iPadOS version, language, region, account settings, and Apple’s rollout. Confirm current requirements on Apple’s product page before treating a particular feature as part of your purchase decision.

The main compromise is the 8.3-inch screen
The display is the mini’s defining trade-off. It is substantially smaller than the approximately 11-inch displays on the standard iPad and iPad Air. That is welcome for reading one-handed or carrying the device on a commute, but leaves less room for two apps side by side, spreadsheets, long typing sessions, or laptop-style work. Macworld likewise cautions that the smaller screen can make multitasking less comfortable.
Storage is another consideration. The deal configuration has 128GB, which may be adequate for ordinary apps and streaming but can feel tight if you keep large games, downloaded video, photos, or creative projects on the device. Decide based on what you store locally; do not assume cloud storage makes the entry configuration suitable for every workload.
Rank #4
The $399 price is for the tablet, not a complete work or drawing setup. Pencil, case or folio, keyboard, AppleCare+, storage upgrades, and cellular service can raise the total. Add only what your use actually requires; Apple lists its iPad accessories separately.
How it compares with other iPads
| Option | Reported price | Screen and strengths | Better fit for |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPad mini with A17 Pro, 128GB Wi‑Fi | $399–$399.99 in 2026 promotions; availability today is unconfirmed in the cited deal reports | 8.3 inches; compact design, A17 Pro, Apple Pencil Pro support | Travel, reading, handheld use, and compact note-taking |
| Standard iPad with A16 | About $349 in Macworld’s June 2026 deal comparison; current price and exact listing conditions may differ | Approximately 11 inches; more workspace at a lower reported sale price | Streaming, schoolwork, browsing, and family use where screen size matters more than compactness |
| 11-inch iPad Air with M4 | About $519.99 in the same Macworld comparison; current price and listing conditions may differ | Larger workspace and more performance headroom | Productivity, multitasking, and buyers willing to pay more for a work-focused tablet |

Best Value
- It can be a gift option
- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
Who should buy it—and who should pass
Buy the mini at $399 if portability comes first
- You travel or commute and want a compact tablet for reading, browsing, and entertainment.
- You want a small device for gaming or handwritten notes and value the A17 Pro and Pencil Pro compatibility.
- You already use Apple devices and prefer a compact addition to that ecosystem.
- You have compared the full setup cost and do not need a larger screen or more than 128GB.
Choose the standard iPad if screen size and value matter more
The A16 iPad is the clearest alternative for shoppers who mainly stream video, browse, do schoolwork, or share a tablet at home. Deal coverage put it around $349 in June 2026, roughly $50 below the mini’s reported sale price. For many buyers, the extra screen space is more useful than the mini’s portability.
Spend more on an Air for sustained productivity
The 11-inch iPad Air M4 was listed around $519.99 in the same comparison. It costs more, but is the more natural direction for extensive multitasking, document work, or a tablet intended to supplement a laptop. The mini’s small workspace makes it a poor default choice for keyboard-first work.
Consider Android or a refurbished mini for different priorities
An Android tablet may offer a larger screen or a lower price; compare the specific model’s update policy, app and game support, stylus, accessories, display, performance, warranty, and ecosystem fit rather than assuming one platform is universally better. A refurbished mini could cost less, but compare battery-health terms, warranty, condition, included accessories, return window, and seller reputation against a new unit at $399.
Should you buy now or wait?
The $399 price has been reported during multiple 2026 promotions, while Macworld has also reported a lower $349 historical price. That makes waiting reasonable if you already have a capable tablet and care most about reaching the lowest reported price. It does not guarantee another discount or tell you when one will happen. If you need a compact tablet now and find the right new configuration at $399, the price is good enough to buy without treating it as a once-in-a-lifetime bargain.

Check the listing before you pay
- Confirm the model: iPad mini with A17 Pro, 128GB, Wi‑Fi. Do not assume a similarly titled listing has the same storage or connectivity.
- Confirm condition and seller: Make sure it is new and sold by a retailer you trust; review marketplace seller details, return policy, and warranty coverage.
- Check the final price: Look for coupon, membership, trade-in, payment-method, shipping, or carrier requirements, and compare the checkout total before tax where applicable.
- Choose storage and accessories deliberately: Consider whether 128GB suits your files, then add a Pencil, case, keyboard, or protection plan only if needed.
Retail listings for the A17 Pro mini can be checked through Best Buy’s iPad mini search. A listing is not a price guarantee: verify the selected configuration and terms at checkout.
