Meta already operates a data center in Forest City, North Carolina; its recent Hickory announcement is for Corning to expand optical-cable manufacturing, not for a new Meta data-center campus. Meta, formerly Facebook, lists Forest City as an established site whose construction began in 2010. The distinction matters: the Hickory project supports data-center infrastructure, but it is a separate manufacturing facility.
Where is Meta’s North Carolina data center?
Meta’s U.S. data-center locations page lists Forest City, in Rutherford County, as its North Carolina site. The company says it broke ground there in November 2010. Meta’s current listing describes an existing data center, not a newly announced North Carolina campus. Meta’s U.S. locations page and its April 14, 2026 account document the site and its history.
What did Meta announce in Hickory?
The newer North Carolina announcement concerns Corning, which is building an optical-cable manufacturing expansion in Hickory. Meta reported on April 14, 2026, that construction was underway. Corning supplies fiber-optic cable for data-center infrastructure under a multiyear agreement with Meta. That makes the Hickory facility part of the supply chain for data centers; it does not make the facility a Meta data center.
In January 2026, Meta announced an agreement with Corning valued at up to $6 billion. That figure is the value of the multiyear supply agreement, not the cost of a North Carolina data center. Meta said the agreement supports a projected 15 to 20 percent increase in Corning’s North Carolina employment levels; this is a projection, not a completed job count. Meta’s announcement described the manufacturing relationship as part of building U.S. data-center infrastructure. (Meta’s January 2026 announcement)

| Place and project | What it is | What Meta has said |
|---|---|---|
| Forest City | Meta data center | Meta says it broke ground in November 2010; its current location listing reports an investment of $750 million+ and 275+ operational jobs supported once completed. |
| Hickory | Corning optical-cable manufacturing expansion | Meta reported construction underway in April 2026. It is linked to data-center supply, not a new Meta campus. |
What does Meta report about Forest City’s investment and jobs?
Meta’s current location listing reports a Forest City investment of $750 million+ and says 275+ operational jobs are supported once the site is completed. The same listing says hundreds of skilled trade workers were on site at peak construction. These are different measures: peak construction labor describes a temporary build phase, while operational jobs supported is Meta’s stated support figure. Neither number establishes the data center’s current permanent headcount. These figures are Meta’s published claims, not independently verified employment or economic-impact measurements. (Meta Data Centers)
What does Meta say about local utilities and water?
In its Forest City fact sheet, Meta says it worked with Duke Energy on energy infrastructure and with the Town of Forest City to pay the full cost of water and wastewater service for its data center. Meta also describes water reuse, rainwater capture and infiltration, water-efficient cooling and fixtures, and LEED Gold certification for its operating buildings. These are company descriptions of its arrangements and practices; the fact sheet does not independently establish their local utility, environmental, or financial outcomes. It should not be read as evidence that Meta pays every systemwide utility cost. (Meta’s Forest City fact sheet)
