In May 2024, a California Department of Justice spokesperson said Archewell Foundation was “current and in good standing” after reports that it had received a delinquency notice. That statement describes the Foundation’s status at that time; it does not establish its status today. California says its live Registry Search Tool is the controlling source for a current determination. The Sussexes’ official site now says the Foundation is becoming Archewell Philanthropies.
What happened with Archewell’s California delinquency notice?
In May 2024, reports said Archewell Foundation had received a California DOJ delinquency notice related to required reports and annual fees. A department spokesperson subsequently told Vanity Fair on May 15, 2024: “After being in touch with our Registry of Charities and Fundraisers, the organization is current and in good standing.”
An Archewell spokesperson said the Foundation had made due payments and filed the necessary paperwork, and described it as compliant and in good standing. Those were the organization’s statements about the episode; the department spokesperson’s comment was the state’s statement. The reported resolution is historical and should not be read as a real-time status check.
Is Archewell Foundation still in good standing?
The May 2024 statement does not answer that question for October 4, 2026. California’s Registry Reports page says its periodic reports are updated twice monthly, while the Registry Search Tool reflects real-time data. If the two differ, the tool controls for good-standing determinations. The periodic dataset listed there was as of September 16, 2026, so it alone cannot settle the organization’s status on October 4.
#1 Best Overall
The Sussexes’ official site describes a transition from Archewell Foundation to Archewell Philanthropies, but an entity-level California registry record for Archewell Philanthropies is not established here. Do not infer a current status, registration number, or reporting status from the May 2024 statement or the name change.
How California defines a charity’s standing
California evaluates several distinct registry fields rather than relying on the word “current” alone. The DOJ’s status definitions explain how those fields work:
Rank #2
- Ideal for Gifting
- Ideal for a bookworm
- Compact for travelling
- Entity status identifies the entity’s listing status. A Cease and Desist Order entity status indicates it is not in good standing.
- Registration status reflects the registration record. Listed non-good-standing statuses include Delinquent, Delinquent Platform Charity, Expired, Suspended, and Revoked.
- Reporting status is a separate field about filings and review. California gives Listed entity status plus Registered registration status, together with Current, Due, Past Due, or In Review reporting status, as an example of good standing.
- Compliance status is another separate field; a Cease and Desist compliance status indicates the organization is not in good standing.
Terminology matters: California’s guidance says the old “Current” registration label became “Registered.” “Current” can still appear as a reporting status, so readers should check which field they are viewing rather than treating the labels as interchangeable.
How to check a California charity’s standing
- Open the California DOJ’s Registry Reports page and follow its link to the Registry Search Tool.
- Search for the organization under the name shown in its record. Because the Foundation is described as becoming Archewell Philanthropies, check the relevant name or record rather than assuming a transition created a particular status.
- Review entity, registration, reporting, and compliance statuses as separate fields. Apply the DOJ’s definitions rather than interpreting one label in isolation.
- Use the real-time Registry Search Tool for the current determination. The periodic reports are useful, but California says they are updated twice monthly and the tool controls if the records conflict.
What Archewell’s 2024 Form 990 reports
The public Archewell Foundation fiscal 2024 Form 990, signed November 17, 2025, reports these filed figures:
Rank #3
| Form 990 item | Fiscal 2024 amount |
|---|---|
| Contributions and grants | $2,142,653 |
| Total expenses | $5,105,228 |
| Net assets at year end | $2,429,785 |
These are different financial measures: contributions and grants are not the same as total revenue, grant spending, or total expenses. They are figures reported on the organization’s tax return, not a standalone measure of program effectiveness.
CharityWatch says it could not issue a fiscal 2024 rating because it had not obtained the organization’s independent audited financial statements despite outreach. It also notes that the Form 990 says the statements were audited. That describes CharityWatch’s access and rating limitation; it does not establish that an audit did not occur. The organization’s official Archewell Philanthropies page links to its impact report and 2024 Form 990.
Rank #4
What is the Foundation called now?
The Sussexes’ official site states: “After five beautiful years, the Archewell Foundation is becoming Archewell Philanthropies.” That is the best evidence here for the organization’s naming transition. Axios reported on December 19, 2025, on a restructuring involving fiscal sponsorship; that reporting is separate from the official site’s statement about the name change.
For historical context, the Foundation’s 2023 Form 990 described its mission as “SHOW UP, DO GOOD” and outlined work around uplifting communities, building a better online world, and restoring trust in information. Those are descriptions in the 2023 filing, not a complete current program list.
