If you rarely stay at IHG hotels, the no-annual-fee IHG One Rewards Traveler card is usually the lower-risk option to consider—if you expect to use IHG points. The IHG One Rewards Premier card’s $99 annual fee is harder to justify unless you can use its anniversary free night and other IHG benefits. If IHG rewards do not fit your travel, neither card may be worth carrying.

When can Premier’s annual fee make sense?
Premier’s main recurring offset is its anniversary free night. It can justify some or all of the $99 fee if you can book a stay you actually want at an eligible hotel, on dates when a reward night is available, and use the certificate within its terms.
#1 Best Overall
IHG currently describes the certificate as covering a redemption up to 40,000 points, with points from your account available to make up the difference for a more expensive reward night. That expands the possible choices, but the certificate is not cash and does not guarantee availability. Its practical value depends on the hotel’s cash price and reward rate on your dates, and whether you would otherwise pay for that stay. There is no universal dollar value that applies to every cardholder.
How does the fourth reward night work?
IHG and Chase list a fourth-night benefit for qualifying reward-night bookings of four or more nights. It applies to point redemptions, not paid stays. It matters to a rare IHG guest only if they have the points, find award availability, and plan a long enough IHG stay.

Do status and points matter if you rarely stay?
Elite status
IHG lists Silver Elite with Traveler and Platinum Elite with Premier while you retain the relevant card. Premier’s higher status may be more useful to someone who stays at IHG properties regularly; with few stays, there are fewer occasions to benefit. Status alone is a weak reason to pay Premier’s fee if you seldom use it.
Points
Both cards are positioned around earning IHG points and using IHG benefits. The official materials cited here do not establish a universal cash value for those points. Treat them as hotel rewards, not as cash or as interchangeable with more flexible rewards; judge them by the IHG stays you are realistically likely to book.

Choose based on your likely IHG use
- Consider Traveler if you want to earn IHG points without taking on an annual fee and have a realistic plan to redeem them.
- Consider Premier if you can use its anniversary certificate for a stay you want and expect its other IHG benefits to matter enough to support the recurring fee.
- Consider neither if you rarely stay at IHG hotels and do not expect to use IHG points or the certificate. Hotel-specific rewards are a poor fit when your travel does not create opportunities to redeem them.
Before choosing, compare your expected IHG nights, whether you can use the certificate before it expires, the likelihood of finding reward availability at destinations you visit, and whether you expect to make four-night award stays. Also account for any other cards you already hold. These details determine whether Premier’s benefits are useful to you rather than merely attractive on paper.
Chase lists reimbursement of up to $120 every four years for a Global Entry, TSA PreCheck, or NEXUS application fee on Premier. It is an occasional secondary benefit, not a substitute for a plan to use the card’s IHG benefits. See Chase’s Premier product page for current terms.
