The standard Prime membership is still listed at $139 a year or $14.99 a month, but its included Prime Video catalog now has limited ads. Removing ads from qualifying shows and movies requires the optional Prime Video Ultra add-on, which brings the annual Prime total to $184.99 when both are billed annually. Decide by counting the shopping and other benefits you actually use—not by treating Prime as a video-only subscription.
What changed—and what did not
Amazon announced limited advertising for Prime Video movies and shows in 2023, and ads began in the U.S. on January 29, 2024. The current change is the introduction of Prime Video Ultra: on April 10, 2026, Amazon replaced its earlier ad-free option with Ultra, priced at $4.99 monthly or $45.99 annually for customers with an annual Prime membership. The base Prime membership price did not rise as part of Ultra’s launch. Amazon’s announcement of the ad-supported change and its Ultra details explain the timeline and current offer.
That distinction matters: the included viewing experience changed, while the ad-free and premium playback tier now costs extra. If you consider the old ad-free experience essential, count Ultra as part of your membership cost rather than assuming it is included.
What Prime and Ultra cost in the U.S.
Amazon’s listed standard Prime prices are $14.99 per month or $139 per year. Eligible students and young adults can get a six-month $0 trial followed by $7.49 monthly or $69 annually; qualifying customers verified for Prime Access pay $6.99 monthly after the trial. Eligibility and offers can change, so check Amazon’s current terms before enrolling. Amazon’s benefits and pricing page lists the membership options.

| Prime paid annually | — | $139 |
| Prime and Ultra, both paid monthly | $19.98 | $239.76 |
| Annual Prime and annual Ultra | About $15.42 | $184.99 |
| Annual Prime and monthly Ultra, annualized | About $16.57 | $198.88 |
The Ultra annual price of $45.99 applies with annual Prime; Amazon lists Ultra at $4.99 monthly. On these listed prices, annual Prime plus annual Ultra is the least expensive ad-free combination. Ultra is an add-on, not a replacement for Prime or a standalone subscription: Amazon says a Prime or Prime Video subscription is required.
What the included Prime Video tier gives you
Without Ultra, the standard Prime Video benefit includes limited ads and supports HD, HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, four concurrent streams, and up to 50 offline downloads, according to Amazon’s current feature table. It includes Amazon MGM originals, licensed movies and shows, and selected live sports. It does not make every title in the Prime Video interface free: rentals, purchases, and channel subscriptions can appear alongside included programming.

Prime Video is most persuasive as a substantial bonus within a wider membership, especially if you follow particular Amazon exclusives or included sports. As a standalone reason to pay for Prime, it is less compelling when the shows you want are rented, the ads bother you, or you expect 4K/UHD and Dolby Atmos. Amazon’s interface brings included titles and separate paid options together, so check the title’s price and format before assuming either is part of your membership.
What Ultra adds—and where ads can remain
Ultra adds ad-free viewing for qualifying Prime Video movies and shows, 4K/UHD, Dolby Atmos, up to five concurrent streams, and up to 100 offline downloads. Amazon’s listed video and audio formats depend on the title, device, and internet bandwidth; not every title is available in every format. Stream and download limits can also vary by title, device, provider, or profile.

Ultra does not promise a commercial-free experience across every kind of programming. Amazon says ads may remain in live TV and events such as sports, selected ad-supported content, and some subscriptions. It is more accurate to think of Ultra as ad-free for qualifying titles in the Prime Video catalog, not as a blanket guarantee covering everything in the app. Amazon’s Ultra feature and ad-exception details describe those limits.
Count Prime’s other benefits only if you use them
Prime is a bundle, so separate its shopping and services value from its video value. Amazon lists free Prime shipping on more than 300 million items and same-day or one-day delivery on tens of millions of popular items in eligible locations. It also lists Prime Video programming and live sports; Amazon Music access to more than 100 million songs in shuffle mode and ad-free podcasts; unlimited full-resolution photo storage plus 5 GB of video storage through Amazon Photos; Prime Reading; Prime Gaming and Luna benefits; and fuel savings of 10 cents per gallon at participating stations.

Other possible value depends on your eligibility and use: Prime Visa is subject to card approval and separate terms; some Amazon health, pharmacy, and One Medical services have discounts or preferred pricing; and Amazon Family allows sharing of some benefits subject to limits. Delivery speeds, grocery availability, fuel participation, and service access vary by location. Amazon’s published benefit and savings estimates are not a guarantee that every member will save a particular amount. Do not assign a dollar value to a benefit you would not otherwise use or pay for.

- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
- Estimate shopping value: Count your Amazon orders and estimate eligible shipping charges you would otherwise incur. Include grocery delivery or pickup savings, fuel discounts, and Prime-only offers only when you actually use them.
- Estimate service value: Include Music, Photos, Reading, Gaming, household sharing, pharmacy or health offers, and card rewards only to the extent they replace something you would otherwise buy or use.
- Calculate the residual: Use
Annual Prime cost − realistic annual savings from benefits = effective entertainment-and-membership cost. For example, if your annual Prime fee is $139 and your genuine delivery and fuel savings total $90, $49 remains before assigning any value to entertainment. - Decide separately on Ultra: Add $45.99 for annual Ultra, or $4.99 for each monthly billing month, only if ad-free qualifying titles and the premium playback features are worth that amount to you.
- Check what you would replace: If you cancel, price the shipping, grocery, storage, music, or streaming services you would actually replace. Compare those costs with the benefits you lose, not with every benefit Amazon advertises.
Amazon’s estimated savings are averages or calculations based on assumptions, not a personal forecast. For example, its fuel-savings estimate depends on assumed annual mileage and fuel use. Your own orders, local eligibility, and usage are the useful numbers.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who is most likely to keep Prime
- Frequent Amazon shoppers: If eligible shipping and delivery convenience would otherwise cost you money or time, the membership can make sense even if you treat video as a bonus.
- Grocery and fuel users: Prime is more valuable when your local grocery options and participating fuel stations make those benefits practical.
- Households using several benefits: Sharing eligible benefits and making real use of Photos, Reading, Music, Gaming, or other services can improve the bundle’s value. Check Amazon Family’s limits rather than assuming everything transfers.
- Prime Video viewers who accept ads: If you watch occasionally and do not need 4K/UHD, Dolby Atmos, or extra downloads, the included tier may be enough.
- Eligible students, young adults, and Prime Access customers: Their lower listed membership prices change the break-even calculation; Ultra remains optional.
Who should consider canceling—or skipping Ultra
- Video-first subscribers: If you rarely use Amazon shopping and services, compare the full Prime-plus-Ultra cost with the standalone streaming services whose shows you actually watch.
- Ad-sensitive viewers who will not pay extra: If ads make the included catalog unpleasant and Ultra does not fit your budget, the bundle may not serve your main reason for subscribing.
- Infrequent Amazon shoppers: Compare actual avoided shipping charges with the membership fee rather than assuming free shipping pays for Prime.
- Viewers who mostly rent or subscribe elsewhere: A Prime Video home screen does not mean its prominent films, channels, or services are included in Prime.
- Live-sports viewers seeking no commercials: Ultra may not solve that problem because live sports and events can still contain ads.
Before canceling, check for Amazon-billed channel subscriptions and consider what happens to Amazon Photos storage, shared benefits, Reading, Gaming, Music access, fuel or pharmacy benefits, and any Prime Visa rewards or card terms relevant to you. A service billed through Amazon is not automatically included in Prime, and canceling Prime may not be the same as canceling each add-on.
Prime versus Walmart+—not a like-for-like swap
Walmart+ is a credible alternative for shoppers whose needs center on Walmart, but it does not reproduce Prime’s full shopping, media, photo, reading, and gaming bundle or Prime Video’s catalog. Walmart lists its standard U.S. membership at $98 annually, with free next-day and two-day shipping without an order minimum, grocery delivery on orders over $35, fuel discounts, and a choice of one ad-supported service—Peacock Premium or Paramount+ Essential—every 90 days. Check current eligibility and local availability on Walmart’s membership page and its streaming benefit page.
| Consideration | Amazon Prime | Walmart+ |
|---|---|---|
| Listed standard annual price | $139 | $98 |
| Shopping fit | Amazon orders and eligible delivery benefits | Walmart shipping and grocery delivery over $35 |
| Included video offer | Prime Video catalog with limited ads | Choice of ad-supported Peacock Premium or Paramount+ Essential every 90 days |
| Other bundle benefits | Music, Photos, Reading, Gaming/Luna and other eligible benefits | Fuel savings and Walmart+ benefits; not a replacement for Amazon’s media and shopping ecosystem |
| Local dependence | Delivery speeds, groceries, fuel and services vary by eligibility and location | Grocery coverage, stores and participating fuel locations affect usefulness |
Walmart+ may suit a Walmart grocery shopper who values one of its video choices more than Prime Video. It is a poor substitute if there is no convenient Walmart service in your area, if you want Prime Video’s specific catalog, or if you want an ad-free included video benefit.

- Write down your actual annual Prime fee and billing cadence; if eligible, use your discounted rate.
- Estimate only the shipping, grocery, fuel, and other savings you personally realize.
- List the Prime Video titles you watch and check whether they are included, rented, or part of a separate channel.
- Decide whether ads are tolerable and whether your devices and viewing habits benefit from Ultra’s 4K/UHD, Dolby Atmos, stream, or download limits.
- Compare your residual Prime cost—and any Ultra charge—with the cost of the specific services or benefits you would replace.
If Prime pays its way through shopping and services, keep it and treat Ultra as a separate entertainment decision. If video is doing nearly all the work, compare the $139 annual Prime fee—or $184.99 with annual Ultra—with focused streaming alternatives, without assuming a rival’s price or features are current until you check them. If you use neither the bundle nor its video enough, individual delivery fees and month-to-month streaming subscriptions may be simpler.
