AliExpress is a legitimate online marketplace, but that does not make every seller, listing, or product trustworthy. It can suit inexpensive, non-critical purchases if you accept variable quality, slower or less predictable delivery, and the possibility of a difficult return. For safety-critical, health-related, high-value, or authenticity-sensitive goods, an authorized seller or reputable domestic retailer is usually the lower-risk choice.
Think of “safe” as several separate questions: Is the platform real? Is this seller reliable? Is the product genuine and safe? Can you recover your money if there is a problem? Each answer can differ for the same order.

What AliExpress is—and what it is not
AliExpress is a marketplace that connects consumers with third-party sellers. The platform, seller, manufacturer, payment processor, and shipping companies may be different businesses, so AliExpress does not manufacture or directly stand behind every item. Its terms describe the marketplace model and incorporate platform rules that can vary by market and product. AliExpress terms and privacy policy AliExpress Terms of Use
A professional-looking storefront does not establish who made an item, whether it is authentic, or whether a warranty will be honored where you live. “Ships from the United States” describes a shipping origin, not necessarily the seller’s location or the product’s country of manufacture. An “official store” label may be a useful signal, but it is not conclusive proof that a particular listing is authentic or that the seller is authorized by the brand.

- No returns and no refunds on Gift Cards.
- Platform legitimacy: AliExpress is a real, functioning marketplace.
- Seller legitimacy: Depends on the particular merchant and its record.
- Product legitimacy: Depends on whether the item is genuine, accurately described, and safe.
- Transaction protection: Depends on the current rules, deadline, evidence, and dispute outcome.
- After-sales support: May be less practical than local warranty service or a domestic return.
Is AliExpress a scam?
The website itself is not a nonexistent storefront or simply a phishing operation. But a legitimate marketplace can still host dishonest sellers, misleading listings, counterfeit products, and transactions that are hard to resolve. A refund policy is not a promise that every claim will be approved. The useful question is whether the specific seller and product are worth the risk, and whether you can absorb a loss if a dispute goes badly.
Why product safety and counterfeits deserve attention
On July 20, 2026, the European Commission fined AliExpress €550 million for failing to adequately assess and mitigate risks involving illegal, unsafe, and counterfeit products under the EU Digital Services Act. The Commission cited risks including counterfeit clothing, unsafe toys, and dangerous cosmetics. This is a serious regulator-confirmed finding about AliExpress’s platform obligations in the EU; it is not a finding that every listing is unsafe, nor does it determine the status of every purchase in the United States or elsewhere. European Commission decision, July 20, 2026
The Commission had also made AliExpress commitments binding in June 2025 concerning trader traceability, reporting, advertising and recommender transparency, and other controls. Those commitments show regulatory remediation efforts, not that marketplace risks have disappeared. AliExpress is designated as a Very Large Online Platform in the EU; the Commission’s designation page lists 104.3 million average monthly active users and AliExpress International (Netherlands) B.V. as the EU establishment, figures and details that can change. European Commission commitments EU designated platform list
Counterfeit risk matters beyond whether a logo is genuine: a fake charger or battery can be unsafe, counterfeit storage can fail or misrepresent capacity, and unknown electronics may raise software, privacy, or update-support concerns. The U.S. Trade Representative’s 2025 Notorious Markets review discusses counterfeit risks across online marketplaces and the difficulty of preventing repeat offenders; it should not be read as a finding that every AliExpress listing is counterfeit. When AliExpress is a reasonable choice
The trade-off is often lower prices and broad selection in exchange for more seller-to-seller variation, less predictable quality control and logistics, harder returns, and weaker practical warranty enforcement. AliExpress is most defensible when the item is inexpensive and non-critical, you can tolerate delay, and a failed purchase would not create a safety or financial crisis.
- Low-cost craft supplies, organizers, decorative items, and simple household accessories.
- Cases, screws, cables, or hobby parts where a variation in finish or dimensions is tolerable.
- Generic accessories from a seller with substantial, recent, product-specific feedback.
These are lower-risk examples, not guarantees. Check the exact specifications and seller, and consider the full cost of a return before ordering.
When to buy elsewhere
Choose a manufacturer, authorized seller, or reputable domestic retailer when authenticity, safety, a firm delivery date, local returns, or usable warranty support matters more than the lowest price. A local retailer may cost more or still use third-party sellers, so check who actually sells the item and what return terms apply.
- Safety-critical automotive, motorcycle, aviation, industrial, or child-safety parts; helmets and protective equipment.
- Unknown-brand mains-voltage devices, chargers, power supplies, and lithium batteries without clear specifications and credible certification information.
- Prescription drugs, supplements, injectables, medical devices, and products making aggressive health claims.
- Cosmetics or skin products where ingredients, contamination, or authenticity matter.
- Luxury goods, collectibles, branded fashion, or electronics where authenticity and warranty are important.
- Storage devices where false capacity or performance would risk data loss.
- Security cameras or smart-home devices that handle personal data if you cannot assess their firmware, privacy practices, or update support.
- Anything whose failure could injure someone, compromise data, or cost more to return than it is worth.
A useful decision rule is to move from AliExpress to a trusted local or authorized source as the consequences of failure rise. If the price approaches that of a reputable local option, compare return costs, warranty access, delivery certainty, and authenticity—not just the listed price.

How to evaluate a seller and listing
Check the seller’s record
- Look for a meaningful order history and recent feedback, not just old reviews or a large headline sales count.
- Read feedback across the store and for the exact product. A high volume can be inflated by merged variants or indicate demand rather than quality.
- Give more weight to specific reviews with buyer photos, regional context, and comments about use over time.
- Look for clear, consistent answers to technical questions and straightforward shipping, return, and warranty terms.
- Be cautious with a suspiciously new or constantly changing store, an implausible discount, or pressure to move the transaction elsewhere.
Check the item itself
- Confirm the model number and the relevant dimensions, material, capacity, voltage, compatibility, and certification claims.
- Compare the title, description, images, and selected variant; contradictions are a warning.
- Check that images show the product and markings you expect, rather than relying only on brand advertising photos.
- For branded goods, treat “original,” logos, and an official-store label as claims to verify, not proof of authorization.
- Do not accept a request to falsely mark an order delivered, leave a review before testing, or pay through a seller-provided link.
Read reviews critically
Star ratings alone do not establish quality. Reviews can be fake, misleading, incentivized, manipulated, or attached to a listing with several different variants. The FTC recommends checking review content and other sources rather than relying on ratings alone; its Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule took effect October 21, 2024, but that rule does not certify reviews on any specific marketplace. FTC marketplace-shopping guidance FTC reviews rule Q&A
Look for feedback that names the exact variant, comes from a relevant country or region, includes photos of the item and packaging, and describes actual use. Be wary of clusters of generic five-star reviews or comments that appear to describe a different product.
How buyer protection works—and where it can fall short
AliExpress buyer protection is a claims process governed by applicable rules, not an unconditional guarantee or a long-term product warranty. The platform’s terms require buyers to follow the relevant return/refund procedure and provide evidence; outcomes depend on the case and the rules in effect. AliExpress also reserves the ability to restrict protection in suspected abuse cases. AliExpress return/refund terms
- Keep the transaction on AliExpress. Keep messages and payment within the platform so there is a record tied to the order.
- Watch the order page. Check delivery and protection status. Use the deadline shown for that order; programs, product categories, destinations, and logistics arrangements can differ, so do not rely on a deadline copied from an older guide.
- Inspect before confirming receipt. Do not confirm receipt until you have checked and, where practical, tested the item.
- Open the formal claim on time. If the item is missing, wrong, damaged, counterfeit, materially different, or defective, use the order’s dispute/return/refund process before its displayed deadline.
- Submit evidence. Include the listing as it appeared when purchased, item and packaging photos, the shipping label, tracking history, seller messages, and relevant serial numbers, measurements, comparison images, or test results. A continuous unboxing video can help for fragile, expensive, electronic, or authenticity-sensitive orders.
- Request a remedy that fits the problem. Depending on the case, request a full refund, partial refund, or return/refund. Check who pays return shipping and whether the proposed amount addresses the actual loss.
- Escalate if needed. If the platform denies the claim, ask your card issuer about a transaction dispute before its deadline and provide an accurate account of any refund already received.
There are practical limits: tracking can show a delivery scan when a buyer says a parcel was misdelivered or incomplete; evidence may be difficult to recover later; and international return shipping can be expensive unless the specific item and destination qualify for a free-return program. You may have to return an item before money is released, and a seller’s chat promise is not the same as a formal dispute decision. A “Choice” or consolidated-shipping option concerns fulfillment, not a universal guarantee of quality or authenticity. For “free returns,” check the exact listing, destination, eligible reason, carrier, and deadline.

Is it safe to enter payment and personal information?
Payment security and merchant trust are separate. Use a credit card when possible: U.S. FTC guidance says credit cards generally offer important protections for merchandise that is undelivered, defective, or incorrect, though the issuer decides claims under applicable law and card rules. Avoid paying a seller by wire transfer, gift card, cryptocurrency, or off-platform payment link; leaving the marketplace can forfeit its protections. HTTPS encrypts a connection but does not prove that a seller or product is legitimate. FTC marketplace-shopping guidance
- Use a unique password and enable available account-security features; do not reuse a password used for banking.
- Do not share one-time authentication codes with a seller or supposed support agent.
- Be wary of fake support accounts, payment links in messages, and unexpected texts or emails about customs fees.
- Avoid storing payment information if the convenience is not worth it to you, and review card or bank statements after purchase.
- Be cautious about unnecessary app permissions, and do not upload identity documents except through an official AliExpress flow when required.

An advertised delivery estimate is not necessarily a guaranteed date. International tracking can have gaps or ambiguous delivery scans, and multiple carriers may handle one parcel. Save tracking screenshots and contact the carrier promptly if a package is marked delivered but missing. A local warehouse may shorten transit time, but does not by itself prove the seller is local, the product is authentic, or that local warranty service is available.
Depending on destination, product, declared value, shipping arrangement, current customs rules, and applicable law, duties, import taxes, brokerage, or local handling charges may apply. U.S. buyers should not assume tax or duty is always included. A customs seizure does not automatically mean a refund; the outcome can depend on listing details, shipping terms, local law, and the evidence available. Do not agree to a false declared value, which can complicate customs, insurance, and a later claim.

Read the return terms before ordering. A return that is technically possible may still be impractical if it requires costly international shipping or a lengthy process. Do not close a dispute because a seller promises a later refund; wait until the remedy is actually completed and recorded.
What to do if something goes wrong
Before opening the package
- If the exterior looks damaged, photograph it before opening and keep the packaging.
- Photograph the shipping label and retain the packaging until you have tested the product.
- For expensive, fragile, electronic, or authenticity-sensitive items, consider filming a continuous unboxing and initial test.
If the item is wrong, damaged, or defective
- Photograph the problem in good light and compare the item with the listing’s exact variant and specifications.
- Record a short functional test when the fault can be demonstrated safely.
- Keep seller communication on AliExpress and open the formal claim before the order’s displayed deadline.
- For a multi-item order, photograph every item and any packing slip so the missing or incorrect item is clear.
- Do not accept an off-platform “refund” unless you are willing to give up the marketplace record and protection.
If the package never arrives
- Check the full tracking history and confirm the shipping address on the order.
- If tracking says delivered, contact the carrier promptly and preserve the response and tracking evidence.
- Open the platform claim within the deadline shown on the order; do not rely on a seller’s promise to resolve it later.
- If the platform does not resolve the issue, contact your card issuer promptly and follow its instructions.
For U.S. credit-card billing-error protections, certain claims involve written notice reaching the issuer within 60 days of the first statement showing the error. Contact the issuer immediately and follow its process; do not assume debit cards or payment apps have identical rights. FTC online-shopping guidance FTC guidance on merchandise you did not receive
AliExpress or a different seller?
For a low-cost accessory with modest consequences if it disappoints, AliExpress may offer worthwhile selection and pricing. For branded, safety-critical, health-related, high-value, or data-sensitive products, compare the total cost with an authorized seller or domestic retailer. Local return options, authenticity, delivery certainty, and warranty support can be worth more than a lower sticker price. Large domestic marketplaces can also have third-party sellers, so verify who sells the item and what protections apply.
Quick Recap
Before paying, ask yourself:
- Could a defect cause injury, data exposure, or a major financial loss?
- Have I verified the exact model, variant, specifications, and seller history?
- Do I have a protected payment method and a realistic way to document the delivery?
- Can I tolerate the delivery uncertainty and the cost or inconvenience of a return?
- Would I still choose this listing if the purchase price were not recoverable?
