That supports the claim of a sharp early drop—but it describes buyback offers, not every private sale. Swappa’s August 17, 2026 marketplace snapshot showed higher completed-sale prices, with results varying by storage and selling channel.
What the early depreciation figures measure
“Resale value” can refer to several different numbers: a buyback company’s cash offer, a carrier’s bill credit, Apple trade-in credit, a marketplace asking price, or the amount a private buyer actually pays. They are not interchangeable. Depreciation is the change from the original retail price to a later offer or sale price.
SellCell’s analysis measured real-time trade-in pricing from more than 40 U.S. buyback companies for devices in good condition. It did not measure completed private-party sales. Its result is best described as early buyback depreciation, not a universal loss in the Air’s resale value. SellCell’s analysis and methodology provide the underlying figures.
How much value did the Air lose in its first 10 weeks?
SellCell found average depreciation of 44.3% across the iPhone Air configurations in its 10-week comparison. Individual Air configurations ranged from 40.3% to 47.7%; the 1TB model was the weakest performer at 47.7%.

| Phone range | Average depreciation at the comparable point |
|---|---|
| iPhone Air | 44.3% |
| iPhone 17 range | 34.6% |
| iPhone 16 range | 39.0% |
| iPhone 15 range | 31.9% |
| iPhone 14 range | 36.6% |
The Air’s average was 9.7 percentage points above the iPhone 17 range—not simply “9.7% more” in the relative sense. The 47.7% figure applies to the 1TB configuration in this defined, early trade-in comparison; it does not mean every Air lost nearly half its value or that the same loss applies in August 2026.
Why the Air may have depreciated faster
The figures show a price outcome, not a proven cause. The Air launched in the U.S. at $999 and is positioned around a 5.6mm titanium body, 165-gram weight, 6.5-inch ProMotion display and A19 Pro chip. It has a 48MP Fusion Main rear camera; Apple’s standard iPhone 17 adds a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera. Those differences may matter to buyers weighing thinness against camera flexibility or other practical priorities. Apple lists the Air’s specifications and storage options on its iPhone Air page.

SellCell also pointed to questions about parts, repair costs and the ultra-thin design. These are possible influences, not independently established causes of the measured price drop. The available figures do not establish that weak sales, durability, battery life, or any single feature was chiefly responsible.
Storage can affect resale differently from its original retail premium. Buyers may not pay the full original upgrade premium for more capacity, and a higher-capacity configuration may have fewer interested buyers. Those are plausible market dynamics, not findings demonstrated by SellCell’s comparison.

What current marketplace prices showed in August 2026
Swappa’s page, updated August 17, 2026, showed average completed-sale prices below average asking prices. The figures are a marketplace snapshot, not a continuation of SellCell’s buyback methodology.
| Storage | Average completed sale | Average listing price |
|---|---|---|
| 256GB | $698 | $808 |
| 512GB | $799 | $885 |
| 1TB | $894 | $1,034 |
Swappa also showed an overall average price of $850 and a starting price of $580. The 1TB category had only three listings in the cited snapshot, so its average is especially limited and should not be treated as a precise national benchmark. See Swappa’s iPhone Air price page for the marketplace figures.

For an unlocked 256GB Air, the same Swappa snapshot showed an average marketplace price of $797 and a trade-in figure of $465. That difference illustrates why the channel matters. A marketplace sale may bring more than a buyback offer, but sellers must account for fees, shipping, time and the possibility of a price adjustment after inspection.

- Apple or carrier trade-in: Usually simpler than finding a buyer, but the value may be credit rather than cash and depends on current eligibility and condition. Apple’s displayed offers can change; check Apple Trade In and the iPhone shopping page for current terms.
- Buyback comparison: Comparing several quotes can save accepting the first offer. Quotes can change or be revised after the device is inspected; BankMyCell’s iPhone Air page is one comparison option.
- Private marketplace: This may produce higher proceeds, but requires listing, buyer communication and delivery. Swappa says listed phones must be fully functional, ready to activate, not blacklisted, free of cracked glass or water damage, and not subject to an outstanding carrier balance. Its seller page states that buyers and sellers each pay a 3% fee after a completed sale. Review Swappa’s selling requirements before listing.
Before accepting an offer, compare cash with store credit and any carrier bill credits; a larger nominal credit is not the same as cash. Check unlocked status, document the phone’s condition and repair history, and compare completed-sale prices rather than relying on asking prices. For a private sale, account for fees and shipping when estimating what you will keep.

Should an owner sell now or keep the phone?
The early depreciation figure alone does not decide whether selling is worthwhile. Compare the best net offer with the cost of replacing the phone and the value you expect to get from continuing to use it.
- Selling may make sense if you already plan to upgrade, have a strong current offer, and the replacement promotion makes the total cost acceptable.
- Keeping it may make sense if the phone meets your needs and selling now would lock in a loss you do not need to realize. A low offer is not a reason by itself to replace a working device.
- Check the terms closely if a carrier offer appears unusually generous: bill credits may depend on eligibility or ongoing service requirements, so compare the full commitment with a cash offer.
Is a used iPhone Air a good buy?
A lower used price can make the Air more appealing to someone who values its thin, light design, A19 Pro chip and 6.5-inch 120Hz display, and who plans to keep the phone for several years. It is a less natural choice for annual upgraders who depend on strong resale value, people who prioritize an ultra-wide rear camera, or anyone paying close to the $999 U.S. starting price for a new model. Apple’s U.S. shopping page lists the current purchase options; compare any used listing with new-phone promotions before deciding.
For a used purchase, favor an unlocked device unless you have confirmed carrier compatibility. Ask about repair history and check battery health and any parts or service warnings. Confirm the phone is not Activation Locked or subject to a carrier balance, and use buyer protection. A very low asking price can reflect a locked, damaged or blacklisted device, not just a bargain.
