It is less attractive if you demand simple pricing, a modern beginner dashboard, guaranteed US server placement, or fully managed infrastructure. The deciding factor is the specific IONOS product—not the brand name alone—and the renewal price after any promotion ends.
IONOS at a glance
- Best for: Budget-conscious blogs, small businesses, developers seeking inexpensive VPS resources, and customers who want domains, email, hosting, and site tools in one account.
- Products: Shared web hosting, WordPress hosting, website builder, VPS, cloud servers, dedicated servers, domains, and email.
- Official claims: 24/7 support, included SSL on listed hosting plans, more than 70 one-click applications, geo-redundant infrastructure, and over 99.99% uptime for relevant products (IONOS web hosting; IONOS WordPress hosting).
- Main risk: Introductory prices can rise substantially at renewal, while plan limits, backups, locations, and cancellation rules vary by product and country.
IONOS is a legitimate full-service provider, but a shared-hosting experience does not represent its VPS or website-builder experience. Choose the workload first, then compare the exact contract.
Which IONOS product fits your site?
Shared web hosting
Shared hosting suits static sites, modest blogs, portfolios, and small-business websites that do not need root access. IONOS lists SSL, 24/7 support, one-click installation for more than 70 applications, and monthly billing on corresponding packages (official plans). Before buying, verify the number of websites, storage and database limits, staging, backup restoration, PHP settings, cron jobs, SSH/SFTP access, and whether a US data center can be selected.
WordPress hosting
WordPress plans are appropriate for owners who want WordPress-specific setup and tooling. IONOS lists SSD storage, MariaDB, automatic updates, SSH, SFTP, WP-CLI, Git, cron jobs, DDoS protection, and malware scanning or repair depending on tier, plus a 30-day money-back guarantee (plan comparison). “Managed” does not automatically mean IONOS updates every plugin, tunes performance, restores every backup, or migrates your site. TechRadar reports that managed WordPress plans may be limited to one website and that free migration was not included in its review (TechRadar review).
VPS hosting
An IONOS VPS is the strongest fit for developers and technically capable businesses needing root access, dedicated virtual resources, NVMe storage, unlimited-traffic claims, and selectable locations. Reported entry configurations include Linux XS with one CPU core, 1 GB RAM, and 10 GB NVMe storage; TechRadar reported a $2-per-month promotional price in its review (VPS comparison). Prices and configurations change.
That low price is for infrastructure, not administration. You are responsible for operating-system updates, firewall and server hardening, web server and database configuration, monitoring, malware response, backups, and recovery. Do not choose an unmanaged VPS unless you can perform those tasks or pay an administrator.
Website builder
The builder is for users who prefer templates and no-code editing over WordPress portability. TechRadar reports a royalty-free image library, free domain, SSL, AI-generated sites and logos, multilingual features, and e-commerce tiers (review). Confirm export and migration options before building a business that may later need conventional WordPress or server hosting. Wix is generally stronger for visual design and specialized store tooling, while WordPress offers greater extensibility.

IONOS pricing: calculate the real cost
IONOS pricing depends on country, currency, term, and checkout date. Independent snapshots have reported shared plans from roughly $1 promotional pricing to regular prices around $4–$10 or more, WordPress promotions around $1–$12, and VPS promotions from about $2 monthly. These are historical signals, not current quotes (WebsitePlanet; TechRadar; TechRadar VPS comparison).
| Product | Introductory price | Introductory term | Renewal price | Sites | Storage | Backups | Best for | Source/date checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shared hosting | Varies; check checkout | Varies | Varies; check checkout | Plan-dependent | Plan-dependent | Plan-dependent | Basic sites and blogs | IONOS; current terms required |
| WordPress hosting | Varies; check checkout | Varies | Varies; check checkout | May be one per plan | Listed tiers include 25, 50, or 75 GB | Selected tiers | One-site WordPress users | IONOS; current terms required |
| VPS | Historical entry signal about $2/month | Review-specific | Not stated; check checkout | Multiple applications | Entry signal: 10 GB NVMe | May be paid add-on | Developers and administrators | TechRadar; review-specific |
| Website builder | Varies; check checkout | Varies | Varies; check checkout | Product-dependent | Product-dependent | Not stated | No-code business sites | TechRadar; review-specific |
Use this calculation rather than the headline monthly figure:
Total first-term cost = promotional monthly price × promotional months + domain renewal + paid add-ons + taxes
For a 24- or 36-month decision, add the renewal-period cost, domain renewal, backup/security charges, extra mailboxes, and store features. Save the checkout screen and renewal date.
Reliability and performance
IONOS advertises more than 99.99% uptime and geo-redundancy. At 99.99%, the mathematical maximum downtime is about 4 minutes 23 seconds in a 30-day month or 52 minutes 36 seconds per year; that calculation is not a compensation promise. A HostAdvice test running March 27–April 26, 2026 recorded 99.875% uptime, three incidents, and just under 54 minutes of downtime, including a longest outage of 26 minutes 56 seconds (test details). One 30-day test cannot establish every customer’s experience.
Speed depends on plan, region, caching, theme, plugins, images, database, traffic, and test method. TechRadar used WordPress benchmarking and Siege load testing, but its results should not be generalized to every IONOS plan (methodology). Shared resources are less predictable than VPS resources; a VPS improves isolation but adds administration.
Support, control panel, and server location
IONOS advertises 24/7 support and a personal consultant (official page). HostAdvice reported a 19-minute live-chat interaction that resolved a technical VPS question, but that does not predict every shared-hosting or WordPress case (US review). Separate billing help, application support, server administration, migration assistance, and outage response when evaluating support.
Rank #4
The broad catalog can make the interface feel dated or confusing compared with beginner-first hosts. Shared and WordPress customers may not be able to guarantee a US server, even though IONOS operates US facilities. HostAdvice reports US location selection for VPS, cloud, and dedicated products, but not guaranteed selection for shared or WordPress hosting (location review).
Backups, security, and migration
Listed protections include SSL, DDoS shielding, automated WordPress updates, malware scanning or repair on certain tiers, geo-redundancy, and daily backups on selected plans (IONOS WordPress details). Daily does not specify retention, point-in-time coverage, or restoration speed. In the VPS context TechRadar reviewed, cloud backup was cited at $0.065 per GB per month (VPS review).
Keep an independent off-site copy. Before changing DNS:
Recommended Free Tools
Best Value
- Export site files and the database.
- Save DNS records, email settings, PHP/application versions, and scheduled jobs.
- Lower DNS TTL ahead of the move.
- Test restoration on the new host.
- Keep the old service active until pages, forms, payments, redirects, SSL, cron jobs, and email work.
Cancellation and renewal checklist
TechRadar describes this route: Control panel → account icon → Contracts & Subscriptions → product → gear icon → Manage Contract → Show Cancellation Options. Choose whether to cancel the contract or individual add-ons. Domain auto-renewal may need separate action (review).
- Confirm the exact term, renewal price, and renewal date.
- Disable unwanted domain, email, backup, and security renewals.
- Save confirmation emails or numbers.
- Check when data is deleted and whether cancellation ends service immediately or at term end.
- Use the contract terms for your country; IONOS’s monthly billing and one-month cancellation wording applies only to corresponding packages (IONOS terms).
IONOS versus alternatives
| Need | Consider | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Low-cost shared or WordPress hosting | Hostinger | Compare interface, renewal cost, support, resources, and locations. |
| Managed WordPress and support | SiteGround | Potentially stronger managed tooling, usually at a higher price. |
| Beginner WordPress onboarding | Bluehost | Compare onboarding, backups, site limits, renewals, and support. |
| Low-cost technical cloud/VPS | Hetzner | Strong value for administrators; less suitable for beginners needing guided support. |
| No-code design | Wix | More design-focused, less portable and less server-controlled. |
| Shared/WordPress support comparison | InMotion Hosting | Compare migrations, resources, support, and multi-year cost. |
Final verdict by user type
| User | Verdict |
|---|---|
| Personal blog | Usually suitable if renewal cost is acceptable. |
| Small-business brochure site | Suitable after checking term, backups, and location. |
| Beginner wanting visual simplicity | Consider a builder-first competitor. |
| Multi-site WordPress agency | Check the one-site managed-plan limit; shared hosting may be cheaper. |
| WooCommerce store | Use only after checking resources, backups, staging, and support. |
| Developer needing a cheap VPS | Strong candidate with the skills to administer it. |
| Nontechnical VPS buyer | Poor fit unless an administrator is available. |
| Mission-critical application | Compare premium managed or cloud providers with clearer service guarantees. |
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: IONOS is a credible value option, not a universal winner. Choose it when low entry cost, phone support, and a broad upgrade path matter; avoid it when renewal transparency, guaranteed server geography, polished simplicity, or fully managed operations are non-negotiable.
