Intuitive Surgical is growing procedures, expanding its da Vinci installed base and increasing system placements. Those results support a strong business, but they do not settle whether the stock price leaves enough room for execution risk. The valuation question is whether future procedure growth, system adoption and margins can meet the expectations investors are already paying for.
What Intuitive Surgical sells—and how the business earns revenue
Intuitive develops, manufactures and markets the da Vinci surgical system, and also sells Ion, an endoluminal system used in lung biopsy procedures. The company has commercialized several generations of da Vinci since 1999; da Vinci 5 was introduced in 2024. Intuitive Surgical’s 2025 Form 10-K describes the company’s platforms and business.
It is not simply a one-time robot-sale business. Hospitals can purchase or lease systems, while use of the platforms involves instruments, accessories and service. Procedures and installed systems therefore help explain demand, but neither metric alone shows how much revenue or earnings the company will generate. Lease versus purchase mix, system utilization, and instruments, accessories and service revenue all matter when assessing how adoption translates into financial results.
What the latest reported results show
In Q2 2026, worldwide da Vinci and Ion procedures grew approximately 16% year over year; da Vinci procedures grew approximately 15% and Ion procedures approximately 36% — Intuitive Surgical, 2026. The da Vinci installed base reached 11,710 systems at June 30, 2026, up 12% from 10,488 a year earlier — Intuitive Surgical, 2026. These are reported operating results, not forecasts.

Intuitive placed 468 da Vinci systems in Q2 2026, including 246 da Vinci 5 systems, compared with 395 total systems and 180 da Vinci 5 systems in Q2 2025. Systems revenue was $685 million versus $575 million a year earlier. The company attributed the increase to a larger lease installed base, higher da Vinci system average selling prices and increased placements. Placements and procedure volume can move on different timelines: capital purchasing decisions do not necessarily translate immediately into use.
Total Q2 2026 revenue was $2.89 billion, up 19% year over year. GAAP net income was $818 million, or $2.29 per diluted share, compared with $658 million, or $1.81, in Q2 2025 — Intuitive Surgical, 2026. The company’s Q2 2026 results release reports these figures. For longer-term context, worldwide da Vinci procedures grew approximately 18% in 2025 — Intuitive Surgical, 2026.

Why a forward P/E cannot answer whether ISRG is overvalued
A price-to-earnings ratio compares a share price with earnings, but a forward P/E depends on both the price used and estimates of future earnings. Zacks Investment Research reported a 30.26x forward P/E estimate for ISRG on September 9, 2026, and compared it with Medtronic and Stryker. That is a dated third-party estimate, not a current multiple unless refreshed, and not an intrinsic-value calculation. Zacks’ September 9, 2026 analysis provides the estimate.
A valuation judgment requires more than labeling a multiple high or low. The relevant question is what growth and profitability expectations the share price implies, and whether the company can deliver them. The supplied figures establish operating growth and one dated valuation snapshot; they do not establish fair value or an investment recommendation.

What investors should examine alongside the multiple
Growth durability
Look beyond a single quarter’s growth rate. Procedure growth by platform, geography and specialty, installed-base expansion, and system placements each reveal a different part of demand. A growing installed base creates potential for more procedures, but it does not guarantee that every system is used enough to support proportional revenue or earnings growth.
Utilization and monetization
Assess whether leased and purchased systems are being used, how instruments and accessories and service revenue evolve, and whether hospitals continue to commit capital to new equipment. These measures help test the link between placements and recurring use rather than assuming that a larger fleet automatically yields higher earnings.
Rank #4
Margins and execution
Revenue growth can coexist with pressure on costs or margins. Manufacturing capacity, supplier reliability, tariffs, direct-market transitions and the expense of supporting a larger installed base can affect execution. A valuation thesis that assumes durable margins should be checked against reported costs and the company’s ability to supply and service systems.
Expectations embedded in the price
Compare the share price and a current, consistently sourced earnings estimate with plausible operating outcomes. A premium valuation may be supportable if procedure growth, adoption and system economics remain durable. Even a strong product can disappoint shareholders if growth or margins fall short of assumptions; the operating results alone cannot tell investors how much optimism is already reflected in the price.

Risks that could challenge the growth and valuation case
Intuitive’s Q2 2026 Form 10-Q identifies risks that include competition from alternative approaches and robotic systems, including domestic competitors in some markets; regulatory requirements and approvals; hospital spending and payer management of procedures; uncertainty in product development and customer acceptance; tariffs; reliance on sole- or single-source suppliers; manufacturing disruption; staffing; cybersecurity; litigation; and adverse publicity about product safety or training. These are company-disclosed risks, not predictions that any one event will occur. The Q2 2026 Form 10-Q describes them.
Demand also varies by geography and procedure. Intuitive reported that U.S. procedure growth in Q2 was led by general surgery—particularly cholecystectomy, hernia repair and appendectomy—and by gynecological growth. This was partly offset by a high-single-digit decline in U.S. bariatric procedures; bariatric procedures represented approximately 2% of total da Vinci procedures. That quarter’s specialty mix is an observation, not by itself proof of a long-term trend or its cause. Global growth can mask different trajectories across markets, tenders and procedure types.
Is Intuitive Surgical a good stock?
That depends on the price paid and the investor’s view of future results, not only on whether the company is a surgical-robotics leader. The latest reported quarter showed expanding procedures, placements, revenue and net income; the valuation evidence cited here is a single September 2026 third-party estimate rather than a current fair-value measure. Investors considering the shares need to decide whether future procedure growth, utilization, system economics and margins can justify the expectations reflected in the price, while accounting for competition and operational risks.
For a time-sensitive assessment, update the share price, earnings estimates, company guidance and latest results before relying on any forward multiple. Intuitive’s investor-relations page listed its Q3 2026 earnings call for October 20, 2026; that date was still in the future as of October 3, 2026. The investor-relations events page is the place to check for company updates.
