Internap completed the second phase of its Secaucus, New Jersey, data center in October 2014. Data Center Knowledge reported that the phase added 13,000 square feet and 1.4 megawatts (MW) of power capacity, doubling the figures reported for phase one. Its headline gives a different power figure—1.3 MW—so the discrepancy matters when citing the expansion.

What did phase two add?

Data Center Knowledge’s October 6, 2014, article body says phase two added 13,000 square feet of data-center space and 1.4 MW of power capacity. The article says those additions matched phase one, making the reported total twice the initial phase’s area and power capacity. The article’s headline instead says phase two added 1.3 MW. Those figures do not agree; the body’s 1.4 MW is the figure used for the detailed account here. Data Center Knowledge, October 6, 2014.

Internap’s own October 2014 account expected the completed facility to reach a combined capacity of 5.6 MW at full utilization. That was a projected fully utilized capacity, not a report that the facility was already drawing 5.6 MW. Internap, October 3, 2014.

How the facility’s power figures differ

The reported numbers describe different things and should not be treated as interchangeable:

  • Up to 18 kW per rack: the planned rack capability described when Internap opened the facility in December 2013. This is a per-rack capability, not the average power used across the building. Data Center Knowledge, December 11, 2013.
  • 15 kW per rack: the 2014 report said some Secaucus customers drew this much per rack. That is a customer-specific rack draw, distinct from the facility’s maximum planned rack capability.
  • More than 150 watts per square foot: Internap’s reported average actual power draw across the facility in 2014. It is an area-based average, not a rack rating. Michael Frank, the company’s vice president of data center services, said: “Based on the circuits in the installation queue, it will only go higher.” Data Center Knowledge, October 6, 2014.

What the Secaucus facility was built to serve

Internap opened the New Jersey site in December 2013 as a hybrid data center for the New York metro market. The company described its offerings as colocation, managed hosting, and cloud computing. The 2014 expansion therefore added space and power to a facility intended to support multiple kinds of customer workloads, not just conventional server colocation.

The 2014 article also noted that the facility was at a higher elevation, presenting that as a consideration in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy. It did not provide a quantified flood-risk assessment, so the elevation reference should not be read as a specific guarantee of protection.

What later ownership reporting does—and does not—establish

Evocative announced in September 2022 that it had closed on the majority of INAP’s data-center assets and included New Jersey among the markets in its portfolio. That is later, portfolio-level context; the announcement does not verify the present operator, condition, capacity, or customer availability of the specific Secaucus facility.
