Intel is a higher-execution-risk thesis on product recovery and manufacturing economics; AMD is a product-growth thesis that relies on outside manufacturing partners. Which better fits depends on the price you would pay, your time horizon and how much business and share-price volatility you can tolerate.
What the latest reported results show
The periods below are not concurrent: Intel’s figures are for the quarter ended June 27, 2026, while AMD’s are for its fiscal year ended December 27, 2025. They offer evidence about each business, not a like-for-like growth or stock-return comparison.
| Company and period | Reported results | What the figures show—and do not show |
|---|---|---|
| Intel, Q2 2026 | Consolidated revenue was $16.128 billion. Intel Foundry revenue was $5.765 billion, comprising $5.5 billion in intersegment revenue and $293 million in external revenue. The segment reported a $2.089 billion operating loss, compared with a $3.168 billion loss in Q2 2025. | Most reported Foundry revenue came from work supporting Intel’s own products, not outside customers. The smaller year-over-year loss is not, by itself, evidence of sustainable foundry profitability; Intel attributes much of the comparison to lower period charges, including the absence of prior-year impairment and accelerated depreciation charges. | Intel, Q2 2026 demand and supply | Server volume rose 9% year over year and server average selling prices rose 48%. Client volume fell 8% year over year. | Intel says the server price increase primarily reflected a richer premium-product mix, with demand-based pricing contributing to a lesser extent. It also says internal supply constraints left demand above available supply and expects industry-wide constraints to continue into the following year. Treat these as Intel’s explanations and expectations, not independent forecasts. Intel Q2 2026 Form 10-Q |
| AMD, fiscal 2025 | Revenue was $34.6 billion, up 34% from 2024; gross margin was 50%, versus 49% in 2024. Data Center revenue was $16.6 billion, up 32%; Client and Gaming revenue was $14.6 billion, up 51%; Embedded revenue was $3.5 billion, down 3%. | AMD’s reported growth was led by Data Center and Client and Gaming, while Embedded revenue declined. These company-reported historical results do not establish that growth will continue. AMD revised its segment reporting beginning in fiscal Q1 2025 and says prior-period segment data were retrospectively adjusted. AMD 2025 Form 10-K |
| AMD, fiscal 2025 profitability | Operating income was $3.7 billion, net income was $4.3 billion and diluted EPS was $2.65. | These are historical fiscal-year figures, not estimates of future earnings or per-share value. AMD 2026 Proxy Statement |
How the manufacturing models change the investment case
Intel: design, manufacturing and foundry economics in one company
Intel both designs chips and manufactures them, while building out a foundry business intended to serve external customers as well as internal needs. That integration can give Intel control over more of the production chain, but it also places manufacturing execution, investment needs and capacity utilization directly inside the company’s results. Investors weighing the thesis need to assess whether Intel can improve process execution and product competitiveness while making its manufacturing assets more economically productive.
The foundry figures above are an important distinction: segment revenue is not the same as a scaled third-party customer business. Intel says substantially all of Intel Foundry still supports internal manufacturing. The external revenue figure therefore matters when judging whether Intel has attracted meaningful business from outside customers.

AMD: product design with external manufacturing partners
AMD depends on third-party manufacturers for integrated circuits and on outside partners for assembly, testing, marking and packaging. This model gives AMD access to external manufacturing capacity without carrying Intel’s same integrated manufacturing footprint, but it leaves AMD exposed to supplier capacity, packaging availability and other parts of its production ecosystem. A strong product opportunity is not enough if the company cannot secure the capacity and components needed to deliver it.
What could drive each stock—and what could undermine the thesis
The Intel recovery thesis
An investor bullish on Intel may expect it to turn demand for client and server products into sustained product competitiveness, ease supply constraints and improve manufacturing execution. A successful foundry build-out could improve the economics of Intel’s own production and eventually bring in more outside customers. The countercase is that process work, manufacturing costs, capital requirements or foundry losses remain difficult for longer than investors expect.

Intel’s January 2026 earnings-call comments describe AI, client products, data-center products and a U.S. foundry as priorities. Management said it was encouraged by progress in 18A yields while also identifying further improvement and a high-volume ramp as ongoing work. Intel’s CEO/CFO earnings-call comments put the challenge plainly: “This will not happen overnight, and our execution needs to continue to improve.” That is management’s own description of the task, not an independent forecast of success. The AMD growth thesis
An investor bullish on AMD may expect it to sustain gains in server and client products, turn AI accelerator demand into recurring and profitable deployments, and strengthen its software and systems position. AMD says fiscal 2025 Data Center growth was driven primarily by fifth-generation EPYC server processors and Instinct MI350-series GPUs; it also reports deployments of MI350X products by large hyperscale customers, OEMs and ODMs, and describes expansion of its ROCm software ecosystem. Those are company-reported activity and strategy, not proof of lasting share gains, durable margins or market outperformance. AMD 2025 Form 10-K

The risk is that competition or execution weakens the product opportunity, AI-related demand fails to translate into profitable deployments, or outside manufacturing and packaging capacity becomes a constraint. Even a company that grows quickly can disappoint shareholders if its results fall short of what its share price already assumes.

Company performance and stock attractiveness are different questions. A business can execute well while its shares are priced for even better results; a challenged business can still be attractive at a sufficiently low price. The filings and company statements cited here do not establish current INTC or AMD share prices, comparable forward multiples or consensus estimates, so they cannot determine which is the better buy at today’s market price.

- Compare valuation on the same date. Check each share price against forward earnings and cash flow, and consider what the market already expects. Do not use historical EPS as a forecast.
- Test different operating outcomes. For Intel, consider what happens if manufacturing improvements and external foundry demand take longer than hoped. For AMD, consider whether product growth and AI deployments can support profitable results while the company depends on outside production partners.
- Match the thesis to your time horizon. A manufacturing recovery may require patience and involve setbacks; product-led growth also depends on continued execution and customer demand.
- Account for portfolio risk. Your ability to withstand losses and volatility, and your existing exposure to semiconductor companies, can matter as much as the business outlook. Neither company is automatically the safer stock.
The operating evidence supports two distinct theses, not a stock-specific recommendation. A defensible choice requires current valuation and a view of which company is more likely to meet or exceed the expectations embedded in that valuation.
