Intel FPGA Unit to Buy eASIC: What Buyers Need to Know

Intel eASIC is not a typical retail FPGA purchase. Learn how to screen N5X capacity options and approach a design-specific quote and conversion.

There is no ordinary Intel FPGA unit to buy as an eASIC. Intel eASIC is a structured-ASIC design-in product, not a retail FPGA board. If you are evaluating a production conversion, Intel’s N5X family is the relevant FPGA-compatible option to discuss with Intel/Altera sales or a qualified design partner; the right device and package depend on your design and require a project-specific quote.

Is eASIC an FPGA or an ASIC?

Intel describes eASIC as a structured ASIC: a middle ground between a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) and a standard-cell ASIC. Intel positions it as a way to pursue lower unit cost and power than an FPGA while avoiding some of the non-recurring engineering cost and time associated with a standard-cell ASIC. Those are product-positioning claims, not guaranteed outcomes for every design.

An FPGA board is typically bought as a development or production component that can be configured after manufacture. An eASIC is instead part of an enterprise design-in and conversion process. A generic FPGA board is therefore not a substitute for buying an eASIC. Intel’s overview is at Intel eASIC.

Which Intel eASIC unit should you evaluate?

Intel lists five N5X capacity options. Use the figures as an initial screening aid, not as a direct measure of fit: the device choice also depends on the design’s interfaces, memory, package, power target, performance needs, security requirements, and expected production volume.

Family member eCells Equivalent ASIC gates
N5X007 0.70 million 7 million
N5X015 1.47 million 15 million
N5X024 2.38 million 24 million
N5X047 4.65 million 47 million
N5X080 8.77 million 88 million

Intel’s N5X materials also describe a quad-core, 64-bit Arm hard processor subsystem and a secure device manager ported from Intel Agilex FPGAs, alongside configurable eCells, transceivers, flexible I/O, and DDR4 support. Published interface figures include continuous transceiver rates from 250 MHz to 32.44 Gbps, native flexible eIO voltages from 1.0 V to 1.8 V (with level-shifter support for 2.5 V and 3.3 V), and DDR4 interfaces up to 3200 Mbps. Confirm that the specific device and package meet your design requirements with Intel; see the N5X product information.

What does Intel’s lower-power claim mean?

Intel’s N5X page states “up to 50% lower core power,” but qualifies this as a 2020 estimate completed July 28, 2020. The comparison used an Agilex AGF014 and projected N5X047 conditions. Treat it as a historical, configuration-specific estimate—not a promise of a 50% reduction for another device, workload, or system. Actual power depends on the implementation and operating conditions.

How to approach an eASIC purchase

  1. Document the current design. Gather FPGA RTL, utilization, memory needs, I/O standards, transceiver requirements, package constraints, power targets, and expected volume.
  2. Screen the N5X family. Compare the design against the listed eCell/gate capacities and interface specifications. Capacity alone does not select a suitable part.
  3. Request a project-specific discussion and quote. Contact Intel/Altera sales or an authorized specialist partner to confirm availability, package, documentation access, non-recurring engineering (NRE) costs, and lead time. Pricing and commercial terms are design- and market-dependent.
  4. Consider the longer-term migration path. Intel describes easicopy as a route from a successful eASIC design to a cell-based ASIC for further cost, power, and performance optimization. Package compatibility is intended to reduce PCB changes, but the migration needs project-specific validation. Details are at Intel easicopy.

Can you buy an Intel eASIC on Amazon?

The official product information describes N5X and N3X as enterprise structured-silicon families, and Intel’s documentation is login-gated. It does not establish an Amazon retail listing for an eASIC unit. Do not treat an Amazon FPGA development board—or a search result using similar wording—as an eASIC purchase. For procurement, start with an Intel/Altera sales inquiry or a specialist partner and verify authorization, availability, and the exact device through them.

Where Intel positions eASIC

Intel names 5G wireless, networking, cloud and storage acceleration, AI inference, video and broadcast, automotive, and military workloads such as radar and secure communications as application areas. These are examples of intended markets, not a guarantee that a particular N5X part meets any application’s requirements. Intel’s 2020 announcement framed N5X as combining FPGA flexibility and time-to-market with structured-ASIC performance and operating-power benefits; the present-day design decision should rest on current, project-specific technical and commercial information. See Intel’s N5X announcement.
