Intel has confirmed a new round of layoffs in its Data Center Group, the organization responsible for server CPUs and related data-center products. The company has not disclosed how many employees are affected, where the cuts are occurring, or whether the process is complete.

Intel says the move is intended to make the group “more focused and efficient” and align its roles and skills with long-term needs. It also says product commitments and road maps are not expected to change. The cuts are a targeted 2026 action—not a newly announced company-wide 15% reduction—and they come as CEO Lip-Bu Tan describes CPUs, ASICs, advanced packaging and foundry services as engines of “sustainable growth.”

What Intel confirmed

An Intel spokesperson confirmed the Data Center Group layoffs in July 2026, shortly before the company’s second-quarter earnings update. The group is part of Intel’s data-center and AI business, which includes server processors and related platforms.

Intel’s stated rationale is organizational: simplify the operation, improve efficiency, and ensure that the business has the roles and capabilities it needs for long-term success. The company said it did not expect the changes to affect product commitments or road maps. That is Intel’s expectation, not a guarantee that execution will be unaffected.

The public confirmation does not establish:

  • the number or percentage of jobs eliminated;
  • which countries, states, campuses or teams are involved;
  • whether employees, contractors or both are included;
  • the timetable for the cuts;
  • severance or redeployment terms; or
  • whether additional reductions are planned.

Those details remain unreported in the available coverage. The confirmation therefore supports saying that layoffs occurred, but not that Intel cut a particular number of thousands of jobs.

CRN’s report contains the spokesperson’s explanation and the road-map statement.

Why layoffs stand out in the data-center business

The timing creates a clear tension. Intel’s first-quarter 2026 results showed company revenue of $13.6 billion, up 7% year over year, while CRN reported 22% year-over-year growth for the data-center business at that time. Growth in a division, however, does not mean every product, location, management layer or support function is expanding.

A company can reduce headcount in a growing business when it consolidates overlapping teams, automates work, changes product priorities, or shifts employees toward a smaller number of strategic programs. Intel’s official explanation emphasizes that kind of focus and skill alignment; it does not attribute the cuts to falling data-center demand.

There are also less favorable interpretations. Cuts in a strategically important organization could reflect duplication, execution problems, a decision to abandon lower-priority programs, or expectations that some parts of the market will weaken. The available announcement does not distinguish among those possibilities.

Intel’s Q2 2026 results and conference call took place on July 23, 2026, providing the immediate financial context for the announcement. The company’s Q1 filing is available at Intel’s investor-relations site.

This is not a new company-wide 15% announcement

Intel has announced several different workforce actions. Combining them into one cumulative headline obscures the scope and timing of the latest news.

Date Action Scope and qualification
August 2024 Cost-reduction plan Then-CEO Pat Gelsinger announced roughly 15,000 roles, or about 15% of Intel’s workforce, alongside a plan for $10 billion in 2025 savings. Intel’s announcement
July 2025 Enterprise restructuring Under Lip-Bu Tan, Intel targeted an approximately 15% reduction in its core workforce relative to second-quarter 2025 headcount and projected about 75,000 core employees by the end of fiscal 2025. The target included layoffs and attrition.
July 2026 Data Center Group layoffs A newly confirmed, group-level action. Intel has not disclosed the number of affected workers or a new company-wide percentage.

The 2025 plan is described in Intel’s earnings release, earnings presentation and SEC filing. It should not be reported as though it were the July 2026 Data Center Group figure.

What Tan means by “sustainable growth”

Tan’s phrase describes Intel’s intended growth opportunities, not proof that a turnaround is complete. In the company’s second-quarter 2026 messaging, he pointed to four areas:

CPU franchise

Client and server processors remain Intel’s core business. Server CPUs are directly relevant to the Data Center Group affected by the layoffs.

ASICs

Application-specific integrated circuits are custom chips designed for particular customers or workloads. They can expand Intel’s role in AI and other data-center deployments beyond general-purpose processors.

Advanced packaging

As systems combine multiple dies and specialized components, packaging technology can become a source of performance and differentiation. It can also support Intel’s own products and outside customers.

  • DDR4 and DDR5 platform support cuts your load times and gives you the space to run the most demanding games

Foundry services

Intel is seeking to manufacture chips for external customers through its wafer-foundry network. That strategy requires competitive process technology, customer commitments and substantial capital investment.

The wording came from Tan’s earnings statement, as reproduced by Fidelity’s syndicated release and Intel’s official results announcement. “Sustainable” is management’s forward-looking objective; it is not the same as demonstrated sustained profits, free-cash-flow growth or durable market-share gains.

What supports—and challenges—the growth case

Evidence supporting the strategy

  • Intel reported $13.6 billion in first-quarter 2026 revenue, a 7% year-over-year increase.
  • CRN reported 22% year-over-year growth in Intel’s data-center business for that quarter.
  • Management identifies AI-related CPU demand, ASICs, advanced packaging and foundry services as potential growth markets.
  • Cost and organizational changes could redirect spending toward priority products and customer programs.

Reasons for caution

  • Intel remained in a restructuring cycle after the 2025 workforce program.
  • Layoffs in a data-center organization raise questions about product prioritization, duplication and execution even when revenue is rising.
  • The undisclosed headcount prevents outsiders from judging the financial scale of the latest action.
  • Foundry expansion is capital-intensive and depends on manufacturing execution and customer adoption.
  • Revenue improvement alone does not establish a completed recovery.

How employees and job seekers should read the announcement

For Intel employees

A strong business-unit growth rate does not protect every function. Employees should distinguish direct Intel roles from contractor positions, the Data Center Group from adjacent AI, networking, software and foundry teams, and completed layoffs from warnings that changes may continue.

Because Intel has not published locations, affected functions or severance terms, employees should rely on official internal communications and applicable local documentation rather than social-media estimates. Legal and severance consequences depend on jurisdiction and individual employment documents.

  • Leading max clock speed of up to 6.0 GHz gives you smoother game play, higher frame rates, and rapid responsiveness
  • Compatible with Intel 600-series (with potential BIOS update) or 700-series chipset-based motherboards
  • DDR4 and DDR5 platform support cuts your load times and gives you the space to run the most demanding games

For job seekers

Treat Intel as a company undergoing continuing organizational redesign, even though selected businesses are growing. Hiring may be concentrated in priority CPU, AI, packaging, manufacturing and customer-facing roles while other teams are consolidated. A job posting or business-growth statistic should not be read as evidence that company-wide restructuring has ended.

What remains unresolved

  • How many people were laid off and what share of the Data Center Group they represented.
  • Which functions, sites and countries were affected.
  • Whether the action is finished or occurring in phases.
  • Whether contractors were included.
  • What redeployment and severance arrangements apply.
  • Whether further group-level or enterprise-wide cuts will follow.

Until Intel discloses those facts, claims about a specific total—or about the effect on particular campuses or engineering teams—remain unverified.

Bottom line

Intel’s latest layoffs are real but narrowly confirmed: the company acknowledged cuts in its Data Center Group without giving a headcount. The move continues the organizational redesign that followed the 2025 restructuring and is being framed as efficiency and focus, not a cancellation of product road maps. Tan’s “sustainable growth” plan identifies CPUs, ASICs, advanced packaging and foundry services as targets, but its credibility will depend on subsequent execution, customer commitments, margins and cash generation—not on the slogan or the layoffs alone.
