Intel agreed in August 2014 to buy Avago Technologies’ LSI Axxia Networking Business and related assets for $650 million in cash. The deal closed on November 18, 2014. Intel said the acquisition would strengthen its network-infrastructure platform as bandwidth demand and the server market grew.

What did Intel buy from Avago?

Intel acquired LSI’s Axxia Networking Business and related assets from Avago Technologies. The operation generated $113 million in revenue during calendar 2013 and had approximately 650 employees, according to the companies’ 2014 announcement. Those figures describe the business at the time of the transaction, not its later performance.

Avago had completed its acquisition of LSI for approximately $6.6 billion in May 2014. The subsequent sale of Axxia transferred LSI’s networking business to Intel; it was not a purchase of all of LSI or Avago.

How much did Intel pay, and when did the deal close?

The announced consideration was $650 million in cash. The companies initially expected the transaction to close in the fourth quarter of 2014, subject to government approvals and customary closing conditions. Intel confirmed that it completed the acquisition on November 18, 2014.

Why did Intel want Axxia?

Intel presented the purchase as a way to broaden its network-infrastructure capabilities and strengthen its platform offering to operators. Its stated aim was to help operators build networks that were more efficient, scalable and flexible. Contemporaneous coverage also connected the move to expected growth in bandwidth demand and a stronger server market.

In practical terms, the deal brought a networking operation into Intel’s portfolio alongside its server and other platform capabilities. The announcement described a strategic rationale; it does not by itself establish how much the acquisition later contributed to Intel’s results or market position.

Is Axxia networking hardware still available?

The 2014 transaction announcements establish what Intel acquired and when, but they do not establish whether Axxia-branded hardware is currently sold, supported, or available through authorized resellers. A buyer evaluating equipment today should verify the exact product’s lifecycle and support status directly with Intel or an authorized seller rather than infer current availability from the acquisition.
