Inside Mago Island: Mel Gibson’s Reported $15 Million Fiji Purchase

Mago Island was historically reported as Mel Gibson’s property, but the $15 million figure varies between an asking price and a reported sale. Current ownership and public access are unverified.

Mago Island is a private island in Fiji that was historically reported as actor-producer Mel Gibson’s property. The often-repeated $15 million figure is not backed here by a purchase contract or official land record: one account describes it as the 2004 asking price, while another reports a completed purchase at that amount, citing People magazine. Neither establishes who owns Mago today or whether visitors can go there.

Where is Mago Island?

Mago is an island in Fiji, in the South Pacific. Tourism Fiji’s overview describes the country’s broad island geography, but does not provide Mago-specific visitor or access information. Tourism Fiji: Discover Fiji’s Diverse Geography.

Does Mel Gibson own Mago Island?

Historical sources identified Gibson as Mago’s owner, but they do not verify current ownership. In a 2007 notice, Fijian conservation organization NatureFiji-MareqetiViti described Mago as Gibson’s property. Knight Frank also called it Gibson-owned in a 2013 property publication. Those dated references support a historical account, not a claim about the present-day titleholder.

What is the evidence for the $15 million price?

The figure appears in two different forms in secondary reporting. The Fiji Times retrospective says Mago, described there as 5,411 acres, was on sale for $15 million in 2004. An ABC News/AFP report dated December 10, 2004, says Gibson bought it for US$15 million, attributing that claim to People magazine. These accounts do not establish the final transaction price through primary documentation.

Account What it reports What that establishes
The Fiji Times retrospective $15 million asking price in 2004; island described as 5,411 acres A reported listing price, not proof of a completed sale at that amount
ABC News/AFP, December 10, 2004 US$15 million purchase, attributed to People magazine A reported completed-sale claim, not an independently documented transaction

Neither account is a purchase contract, official land record, or direct confirmation from Gibson. Read the reports with that distinction in mind: an asking price and a reported sale price are not interchangeable. The Fiji Times retrospective · ABC News/AFP report.

What is known about Mago’s conservation value?

NatureFiji-MareqetiViti says it conducted a Conservation Values study on Mago in May 2007. Its notice describes remaining forest stands, many over difficult limestone karst, and identifies three globally threatened species found on the island: the Sheath-tailed Bat, the Samoan Flying Fox, and the Friendly Ground-Dove.

The organization said the study made recommendations intended to improve wildlife conservation and island management, and that island management was considering them at the time. That dated statement does not show whether the recommendations were adopted or what conservation practices are in place now. NatureFiji-MareqetiViti said the report was available from its secretariat.

Can you visit Mago Island?

Available information does not establish public access, visitor rules, lodging, a tourism operation, or a booking route for Mago. Fiji’s general appeal as a destination is not evidence that this particular private island is open to tourists. Do not assume that a trip to Fiji includes permission or an opportunity to visit Mago.

What does the island’s history tell us?

The Fiji Times retrospective recounts that native owners were moved off the island after conversion to Christianity in the nineteenth century and describes a succession of later ownership. That is the newspaper’s account of Mago’s land history; the cited material does not independently verify it. The same publication gives an area of 5,411 acres, while Knight Frank’s 2013 publication rounds the figure to 5,400 acres. Neither figure is presented as a contemporary survey.
