Its proposed Skellefteå, Sweden, campus has a potential capacity of up to 1 GW, subject to administrative approvals. Separately, the company says it is developing a hyperscale campus in Heusenstamm near Frankfurt; a 2025 market report gives plans for two data centers there. Barcelona and Amsterdam provide operating-portfolio context, but their facility specifications should not be added to proposed project capacity.
What is EdgeConneX building in Europe?
The clearest picture is a mix of a large Swedish proposal and active development near Frankfurt, alongside existing facilities in Barcelona and Amsterdam. The projects differ in status and in the measures publicly reported: Skellefteå is described by the company in terms of potential capacity; the Frankfurt figures are reported plans from Cushman & Wakefield; Barcelona and Amsterdam are facility specifications. Those figures are not comparable measures of a single European construction pipeline.
| Location | Status in cited material | Reported scale | Power, connectivity or timing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Skellefteå, Sweden | Proposed campus; potential capacity is conditional on administrative approvals | Up to 1 GW potential capacity, according to EdgeConneX’s February 27, 2026 announcement | Intended to support future AI and cloud workloads; delivery timing and grid allocation are not stated in the cited announcement |
| Heusenstamm, near Frankfurt | EdgeConneX confirms development of a hyperscale campus; Cushman & Wakefield reports project plans | Two data centers, 57,000 m² and approximately €600 million investment, as reported by Cushman & Wakefield in H1 2025 | Cushman & Wakefield reported green electricity, a new power line and a plan targeting 2027 |
| Barcelona | Existing facility | 8 MW, N+1, according to EdgeConneX location material | EdgeConneX describes carrier-neutral connectivity, subsea links and adjacency to a major substation; live availability may change |
| Amsterdam | Existing campus, described in an EdgeConneX 2023 data sheet | Five data centers and more than 34,000 m² total space in that dated specification | The sheet is dated 2023 and does not establish current availability |
What does the 1 GW Sweden figure mean?
EdgeConneX announced on February 27, 2026 that it planned a campus at Skellefteå with potential capacity of up to 1 GW, subject to administrative approvals. The company said the proposed site would support future AI and cloud workloads. The figure is a potential ceiling, not evidence that 1 GW is approved, under construction, connected to the grid or operating.
The announcement does not establish a construction start, delivery schedule, final investment approval or grid allocation. Those are material milestones for a project of this scale. Until EdgeConneX or relevant authorities confirm them, describe Skellefteå as a proposal with conditional potential capacity—not as committed capacity.

What is the status and scale of the Frankfurt-area campus?
EdgeConneX confirms that it is developing a hyperscale campus in Heusenstamm, outside Frankfurt. Cushman & Wakefield’s H1 2025 update reports plans for two data centers, 57,000 square metres and investment of approximately €600 million, with a target by 2027. These are the consultancy’s reported project plans, not specifications published by EdgeConneX in the cited company material; they may have changed since the report.
Cushman & Wakefield also reports that the plan would use green electricity and a new power line. Those details apply to the reported Heusenstamm plan; they do not establish renewable supply or grid delivery for EdgeConneX’s other projects. EdgeConneX’s community engagement document quotes Heusenstamm Mayor Steffen Ball: “Without data centers, there is no digitization.”

How do existing Barcelona and Amsterdam sites compare?
Barcelona
EdgeConneX describes its Barcelona facility as an 8 MW N+1 site. The company also describes carrier-neutral connectivity, subsea links and a location adjacent to a major substation. These are attributes of the Barcelona facility, not confirmation of power arrangements for the Swedish proposal or Frankfurt development. The company’s location information can change, so its current availability should be checked directly.
Amsterdam
An EdgeConneX data sheet from 2023 describes an Amsterdam campus with five data centers and more than 34,000 m² of total space. That is a dated published specification; it should not be treated as a current capacity or availability statement.

Why the projects should not be combined into one buildout figure
The public figures describe different things: Skellefteå’s conditional potential capacity, reported Frankfurt project plans, Barcelona’s facility power specification and Amsterdam’s dated space total. They do not provide a like-for-like total for EdgeConneX’s European construction pipeline. Adding them together would blur the distinction between a proposal, development, and operating facilities—and mix power, area and investment measures.
For project tracking, keep each location’s status and evidence attached to its figures: whether approvals are pending, whether development is confirmed, who reports a planned schedule or investment, and whether a specification describes an existing site or a dated document. On the available information, the scale of the Skellefteå proposal is striking, but its potential 1 GW should not be read as delivered capacity.
