Ingram Micro CEO Confirms Data Exfiltration in July 2025 Ransomware Attack

Ingram Micro’s July 2025 ransomware incident disrupted global ordering and shipping. CEO Paul Bay later confirmed that certain data was exfiltrated, and the company reported 42,521 affected individuals.

Ingram Micro CEO Paul Bay said on August 6, 2025, that “certain data was exfiltrated from our systems” during the company’s July ransomware incident. That admission confirmed the event involved data theft as well as an outage. Later reporting said 42,521 people were affected by personal-information exposure, although the data categories differed from person to person. Systems were restored in about a week, but operational recovery did not end the privacy, identity-theft and notification consequences.

What happened

Ingram Micro identified ransomware on certain internal systems around July 2–3, 2025. The company publicly confirmed the incident on July 5, took affected systems offline and began restoring them with help from outside cybersecurity specialists. Its official statement and SEC filing describe incident-response and business-continuity measures, law-enforcement notification and an investigation: Ingram Micro’s July 5 statement and Form 8-K.

The outage affected ordering, shipping, licensing and other business processes across regions. Ingram Micro said operations were restored incrementally and were functioning globally within approximately seven days, according to CRN’s account of Bay’s comments.

The timeline, from outage to breach notification

Date What is reported
July 2–3, 2025 Later breach reporting identified this as the period when an unauthorized party removed files from internal repositories, according to CRN.
July 3–5, 2025 Operational disruption began; Ingram Micro publicly confirmed ransomware on July 5 and took systems offline.
About July 10, 2025 The company reported that operations had been restored across regions in roughly a week.
July 30, 2025 SafePay reportedly threatened to publish 3.5 terabytes of alleged stolen data unless a ransom was paid by August 1, as reported by CSO Online.
August 6, 2025 Bay said that “certain data was exfiltrated from our systems” while the investigation continued.
December 26, 2025 Later reporting said Ingram Micro had identified the affected individuals.
2026 Ingram Micro’s annual report described restoration from backups, incident costs and additional security controls.

Why the CEO’s wording matters

Encryption or system shutdown explains why customers could not use services. Exfiltration means attackers copied or removed data. A company can restore systems from clean backups and still face privacy notifications, extortion, regulatory scrutiny, lawsuits and impersonation attempts because copied data cannot be recovered from the attacker’s possession.

Bay’s phrase “certain data” was deliberately limited. It confirmed that some information left Ingram Micro’s systems, but did not identify the repositories, total volume, business records involved or whether every customer, reseller, vendor or employee was affected. He also said the investigation was ongoing and that people would be notified if personal information was found to be involved. The statement did not validate SafePay’s claimed 3.5-terabyte total.

How many people and what information were involved?

Ingram Micro later reported 42,521 affected individuals to the Maine attorney general, according to SecurityWeek. This is an affected-person count, not a statement that 42,521 customers were breached. Reported groups included employees, job applicants and others.

The reported data categories included varying combinations of names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, passport numbers, driver’s-license or other government-identification numbers and employment-related information. The categories varied by individual; the disclosure does not establish that every person had every type of record exposed. Ingram Micro’s general privacy statement also distinguishes employee and applicant information from separate notices, so it should not be treated as the specific breach notice.

Ingram Micro said potentially affected people received 24 months of credit monitoring and identity-protection services. Anyone who received a direct notice should use the enrollment instructions and retain the notice for future claims or verification.

What remains unconfirmed

  • Exact stolen volume: SafePay’s 3.5-terabyte figure is an attacker claim, not an independently verified measurement in the cited company disclosures.
  • Attribution: SafePay claimed responsibility, but Ingram Micro’s cited filings did not publicly confirm that attribution.
  • Contents of allegedly published files: Reports said data was made available in early August 2025, but the available sources do not establish the completeness or authenticity of every file.
  • Initial access: Reports about a possible VPN entry point are not an official technical finding and should not be treated as established fact.
  • Scope beyond the reported population: The 42,521-person figure does not prove that no other business or customer data was copied, nor that all data allegedly taken was personal information.
  • Ransom payment: The cited sources do not confirm whether Ingram Micro paid a ransom.

Operational outage versus financial materiality

For customers and partners, a nearly weeklong interruption to ordering, fulfillment, licensing, shipment status, invoicing or support can be serious even if a public company later reports no “material interruption.” In its 2026 Form 10-K, Ingram Micro said the incident did not materially affect operations, financial condition or reputation and that systems were restored from backups: the 2026 Form 10-K. “Material” in an SEC filing is an accounting and investor-disclosure threshold; it does not mean partners experienced no disruption.

Nor does restoration prove that the access path is fully understood, every credential has been rotated, all stolen files have been identified or third-party systems were untouched. The evidence supports disruption to Ingram Micro’s systems, not automatic compromise of every connected vendor such as Microsoft, Apple or Cisco.

What Ingram Micro says it did afterward

The company said it isolated affected systems, engaged outside experts, notified law enforcement and relevant authorities, investigated the scope and restored systems from backups. Its annual report says it continued standardizing disaster recovery, testing backups and recovery, conducting penetration tests, performing industry-standard security audits, maintaining cybersecurity certifications and improving controls and resilience. Those measures reduce risk but cannot guarantee that another incident will not occur.

Practical steps for partners and potentially affected people

If you are an Ingram Micro customer, reseller or vendor

  • Verify unusual invoice, bank-account, licensing, shipping or renewal requests through a known contact channel rather than by replying to the message.
  • Rotate credentials used for Ingram Micro-related portals and integrations, and require multifactor authentication wherever available.
  • Review privileged accounts, API keys, remote-access tools and third-party connections for unnecessary access.
  • Prepare an alternate ordering, fulfillment and licensing process so a distributor outage does not halt critical deliveries.
  • Tell staff and customers to treat messages using the incident as a pretext for phishing or impersonation.

If you received an individual breach notice

  • Enroll in the offered 24-month monitoring and identity-protection service using the notice’s official instructions.
  • Place a credit freeze with each major U.S. credit bureau if you do not expect to apply for new credit; a freeze is generally stronger than monitoring because it blocks most new-credit inquiries until you lift it.
  • Review credit reports and account statements for unfamiliar activity and report suspected identity theft promptly.
  • Be cautious with calls or emails requesting Social Security numbers, identity documents, passwords or payment changes. Contact the organization independently.
  • Keep the breach notice, enrollment confirmation and records of any fraudulent activity.

Bottom line

Ingram Micro restored its distribution operations relatively quickly, but the August 6 disclosure established that the incident was more than an availability problem: data was exfiltrated. Later reporting identified 42,521 affected individuals and personal-information categories that varied by person. The most defensible conclusion is that operational recovery happened faster than the company could determine the privacy consequences, and important questions about the attacker, stolen volume and full data scope remain unresolved.
