The immediate issue is no longer IBM’s 2024 deal announcement; it is Palo Alto Networks’ retirement schedule. As of August 18, 2026, the final QRadar SaaS end-of-life date—August 31, 2026—is 13 days away for QRadar Suite EDR, QRadar Suite XDR, X-Force Threat Intelligence, Randori Attack and QRadar Advisor with Watson. Earlier SaaS products reached end of life on April 14, 2026. QRadar on-premises products are explicitly outside that SaaS announcement.
What IBM actually sold
IBM did not abandon cybersecurity software as a whole. On May 15, 2024, IBM agreed to sell selected QRadar software-as-a-service assets to Palo Alto Networks. The transaction covered SaaS software, related intellectual property, customer relationships and contracts, plus selected threat-management assets. Palo Alto completed the acquisition on August 31, 2024.
IBM retained its cybersecurity consulting and services business, continues to work with Palo Alto on security offerings, and remains the vendor for QRadar on-premises products. IBM Consulting can also participate in migration, architecture and managed-security engagements. The original announcement is available from IBM, while Palo Alto describes the acquired scope in its acquisition overview.
QRadar’s origins go back to IBM’s 2011 acquisition of Q1 Labs. IBM launched the QRadar Suite SaaS and cloud-native direction in November 2023, before announcing the divestiture in 2024. The practical result is a split portfolio: affected QRadar SaaS services are being retired by Palo Alto, while on-premises QRadar remains an IBM product.

Is Cortex XSIAM mandatory?
No. The affected SaaS products are being retired, so customers need a replacement or an approved archival and operating plan. Palo Alto promotes Cortex XSIAM and other Cortex products as migration destinations and says eligible customers can receive no-cost migration services for the remainder of applicable subscription terms. That offer does not make Cortex a mandatory strategic choice.
Separate three questions in the transition statement:
- Service continuity: when the acquired QRadar SaaS product stops operating.
- Migration assistance: which labor Palo Alto will provide, for which eligible customer and subscription term.
- Strategic destination: whether Cortex XSIAM, another Cortex product, an on-premises interim design or a competing platform best fits the organization.
Ask Palo Alto to define “eligible,” the covered workloads, geographic limits, included engineering hours, data handling and expiration of the offer in writing. The acquisition announcement is at Palo Alto Networks.

What “no-cost migration” may and may not cover
A migration-services offer can remove some professional-services expense without making the entire transition free. Require a line-item scope covering:
- Architecture discovery and connector or parser conversion
- Historical-data migration, archive access and rehydration
- Custom detection-rule and threat-intelligence translation
- SOAR playbook, case-template and custom-function conversion
- Identity, access, endpoint-agent and certificate changes
- Compliance validation, parallel operation and incident-response testing
- Training, change management and third-party services
Also model new ingestion, endpoint, retention, storage and data-transfer charges. Public announcements promise migration services for eligible customers; they do not establish that destination licensing, retraining, custom engineering or every downstream cost is free.
What happens to on-premises QRadar?
Palo Alto’s SaaS notice explicitly says it does not affect QRadar on-premises products or SKUs. IBM says on-premises customers continue to receive security, usability and critical bug fixes, updates to existing connectors, feature support and the ability to expand consumption. That is a current support position, not a guarantee of an indefinite product life.

The migration work that gets underestimated
Detection content
Create an inventory of custom correlation rules, reference sets, building blocks, offense logic, thresholds, exclusions, watchlists, suppression rules, custom properties, parsers, UEBA policies and threat-intelligence lookups. QRadar rules rarely map one-for-one to another platform’s detection language. Test alert meaning and volume, not just whether a rule imported.

SOAR and case management
Export and test playbooks, case templates, custom functions, integrations, API credentials, secrets, certificates, approval gates, escalation paths, evidence attachments, audit trails and analyst roles. A playbook that appears converted but cannot authenticate or preserve approvals is not operationally migrated.
Historical data and evidence
Define retention periods, legal holds, chain-of-custody requirements, export formats, searchability after shutdown, time synchronization, time-zone treatment, identity normalization and preservation of source-IP and asset identity. Keep a readable, access-controlled archive even after real-time detection moves.

Telemetry and connectors
Inventory firewalls, endpoint agents, identity providers, cloud control planes, SaaS audit logs, email security, vulnerability systems, network sensors, OT systems, custom applications and managed-service feeds. IBM’s statement about updates to existing on-premises connectors does not prove that every custom SaaS integration will transfer unchanged.
A 14-point exit and validation checklist
- Identify each affected SKU and its published EOL date.
- Obtain the customer-specific transition letter and eligibility terms.
- Freeze an inventory of rules, integrations, playbooks, dashboards, reports, users and retention obligations.
- Export configuration and data in vendor-independent formats where possible.
- Demand a written mapping from every QRadar capability to the proposed destination capability.
- Define the exact scope of no-cost migration labor.
- Require rollback, coexistence and outage procedures.
- Run representative detection, investigation and response tests.
- Measure alert fidelity, investigation time, automation success and analyst workload.
- Model pricing after migration incentives expire.
- Check residency, regulated-workload, encryption and public-sector requirements.
- Obtain support and renewal terms for both legacy and destination platforms.
- Preserve historical evidence after shutdown.
- Document a second-exit plan, including export rights and notice periods.
Choosing among three strategic paths
Continue on-premises QRadar temporarily
This can be reasonable for customers needing air-gapped or tightly controlled operations, or those that need time for a competitive evaluation. It preserves existing workflows but retains infrastructure, upgrade and vendor-lifecycle obligations. Current IBM support should not be interpreted as an indefinite roadmap commitment.
Migrate to Cortex XSIAM
Cortex XSIAM may fit organizations already invested in Palo Alto firewalls or Cortex endpoint products, seeking a consolidated cloud-centric SOC platform and willing to redesign detection content where necessary. Validate telemetry coverage, QRadar rule semantics, SOAR conversion, data residency and post-incentive pricing. Palo Alto documents NG-SIEM, Enterprise and Premium tiers, but no universal public list price is established in its licensing documentation; expect customer-specific quotes.

Run a competitive SIEM or SOC-platform evaluation
A replacement selection should be based on operating model, not a feature-count contest. Score each candidate for deployment fit, telemetry coverage, detection and SOAR portability, historical-data access, analyst workflow, automation safeguards, commercial predictability, vendor concentration, support model, data governance and future exitability.

|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Sentinel | Microsoft-centric estates using Azure, Defender, Entra ID and related services. | Recalculate ingestion, retention, analytics, automation and workspace costs; requires Azure skills. |
| Splunk Enterprise Security | Organizations needing mature search, extensive customization and a large ecosystem. | Request a model for ingestion, workload, retention, premium applications, deployment and services; operational overhead can be substantial. The 2024 Exabeam–LogRhythm combination and broader convergence of SIEM, SOAR, XDR, UEBA and automated SOC tools show why merger history is not proof of technical parity. Current product and contract diligence remains necessary.
Procurement questions that should be contractual
- What exact SKU, geography and subscription term qualify for migration assistance?
- Which engineering tasks, hours, data volumes and third-party services are included?
- Who pays for export, storage, archive retrieval, parallel running and retraining?
- How will each rule, parser, playbook, case, dashboard and integration be mapped and tested?
- What historical evidence remains available, in what format and for how long?
- What are destination pricing triggers for ingestion, endpoints, retention, users and services?
- What residency, encryption, access-control and regulated-workload options apply?
- What support and renewal terms apply after the incentive period?
- What notice, export and transition assistance rights apply if the replacement is later retired?
The broader lesson for security leaders
The QRadar episode demonstrates that security platforms are renewable dependencies, not permanent infrastructure. Concentration risk is not limited to a vendor’s ownership change; it also includes cloud service retirement, changing commercial models and loss of specialized content. Future contracts should address lifecycle commitments, minimum notice, data-export rights, configuration portability, transition assistance, historical-data access, price protection and a documented exit plan.
For affected SaaS customers, the decision is urgent because the service deadlines are fixed. For on-premises customers, the deadline is different: use the current support position to evaluate deliberately, verify IBM’s contractual roadmap and avoid allowing temporary continuity to become an unexamined long-term dependency.
