When did IBM buy Ahana, and how much did it pay?
IBM acquired Ahana Cloud, Inc. in April 2023. IBM’s first-quarter 2023 Form 10-Q records the acquisition in the second quarter and says the business would be integrated into IBM’s Software segment. IBM’s filing does not state the purchase price. InfoWorld’s April 14, 2023 account of the deal says the price was undisclosed.
What was Ahana Cloud?
Ahana provided PrestoDB as managed software delivered over the cloud. Rather than requiring customers to operate the query engine themselves, the service offered a hosted way to run SQL analytics against data-lake workloads.
Ahana had earlier announced a $2.25 million seed round led by GV on June 2, 2020, and said it had joined the Linux Foundation’s Presto Foundation. That funding figure is the seed investment, not a reported value for the IBM acquisition. Ahana’s announcement describes both milestones.

What is PrestoDB?
PrestoDB, also called Presto, is an open-source distributed SQL query engine created at Facebook. It is designed for ad hoc analytics across data of varying sizes, including data-lake workloads. Ahana’s product was a managed service built around that engine; PrestoDB itself is the underlying software, not a hosted service or a physical product.
Why did IBM acquire Ahana?
IBM described Ahana as an expert in open-source-based, managed cloud-native data analytics solutions and said the business would be integrated into its Software segment. The public rationale was strategic: IBM framed the acquisition as consistent with its investment in open-source projects and foundations, including its participation in the Presto Foundation.

In InfoWorld’s April 14, 2023 report, IBM vice president of hybrid data management Vikram Murali and Ahana CEO Steven Mih wrote: “We see our involvement with Presto Foundation as a similar relationship.” The statement points to the project’s ecosystem and governance as part of the fit; the cited announcement does not provide a quantified financial synergy or acquisition valuation.

IBM’s filing establishes that Ahana was slated for integration into the Software segment, but the available sources do not establish whether Ahana Cloud remained a separately marketed IBM product, was renamed, or is available today. As of 2026, buyers should verify current IBM product documentation before assuming the Ahana name or its former service is still available.
