The headline “Liquidation Sale at All 80 Canadian Hudson’s Bay Stores Could Begin Today” described a March 2025 news moment—not an upcoming sale. The court-approved sales began March 24, 2025, expanded to the six Hudson’s Bay stores initially held out on April 25, and ended June 1, 2025, when the stores closed to the public. There is no new Hudson’s Bay store liquidation sale beginning today, October 3, 2026, in the latest status described by the court-appointed monitor.

What “all 80 stores” meant

The 80 referred to Hudson’s Bay locations, not every store included in the broader HBC Canada liquidation. The court-approved process covered 96 HBC Canada stores in total, including licensed Saks Fifth Avenue and Saks OFF 5TH locations. In its March 28, 2025 update, Hudson’s Bay Company listed closing sales at 73 Hudson’s Bay stores, two Saks Fifth Avenue stores, and 13 Saks OFF 5TH stores; six Hudson’s Bay stores and one Saks Fifth Avenue location were still open then. The court monitor’s account says the first phase had begun at all but six of HBC Canada’s 96 stores on March 24. These are snapshots with different dates and scopes, not conflicting totals. Alvarez & Marsal’s case updates and the company’s March 28 announcement describe the respective figures.

How the liquidation unfolded

Date What happened
March 7, 2025 Hudson’s Bay Company ULC and related applicants obtained protection under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA), and Alvarez & Marsal Canada Inc. was appointed monitor. Monitor’s case page.
March 21, 2025 The Ontario Superior Court granted the Liquidation Sale Approval Order. The monitor’s account says the first phase began March 24 at all but six of HBC Canada’s 96 stores. The Associated Press reported that Justice Peter Osborne said, “This is the art of the possible and we are where we are today. In my view, there is no other alternative.” Associated Press, March 21, 2025.
March 24, 2025 The first phase of the liquidation sale began at all but six HBC Canada stores, according to the monitor. Monitor’s case page.
March 28, 2025 Hudson’s Bay Company announced the participating-store counts and sale terms for Hudson’s Bay and Saks locations. Company announcement.
April 25, 2025 The six initially excluded Hudson’s Bay locations joined the liquidation after the company concluded that a viable going-concern bid for the proposed six-store model was unlikely. Monitor’s case page.
June 1, 2025 The Hudson’s Bay and remaining Saks liquidation sales concluded and stores closed to the public. The monitor described a further period for retrieving and removing store fixtures, furnishings, and equipment. Monitor’s case page.

What the announced sale terms were

Hudson’s Bay Company’s March 28, 2025 announcement set different terms for the banners. The discounts were historical offers and expired with the sale; they are not available now.

Banner Announced discount Other stated terms
Hudson’s Bay 15% to 40% off the lowest ticketed prices Closing discounts did not apply to beauty, stripes, and select luxury brands.
Saks Fifth Avenue and Saks OFF 5TH 15% off Closing discounts did not apply to beauty, stripes, and select luxury brands.

The March 28 announcement also said purchases made on or after March 25, 2025 were final sale. Returns for purchases made before March 25 were accepted through April 6, 2025. Gift cards and store credits were honored through April 6, 2025. These return and redemption deadlines have passed. Hudson’s Bay Company announcement, March 28, 2025.

Was the store sale the same as HBC’s court-supervised sale process?

No. The store-level liquidation was about winding down retail operations and selling merchandise. Separately, HBC’s April 2025 announcement described a court-approved sale and investment solicitation process that invited possible sales, partial sales, investments, or refinancing on either liquidation or going-concern terms. Binding proposals were due April 30, 2025, at 5 p.m. EDT. A separate lease-monetization process sought proposals for leasehold interests. Neither process was a new store sale or a shopper-facing discount event. HBC’s April 2025 announcement.

What happened after the stores closed

Some later corporate and court-supervised activity does not mean Hudson’s Bay stores reopened. The monitor says a transaction between The Bay Limited Partnership and Canadian Tire Corporation closed on June 25, 2025, and notes that certain corporate names later changed. The monitor’s Eighteenth Report, dated September 18, 2026, describes continuing CCAA matters and a hearing scheduled for September 25, 2026, concerning retirement arrangements. That report predates the scheduled hearing and does not establish its outcome. The latest status available here therefore supports the completed 2025 store liquidation, not a new retail sale. Can shoppers still use gift cards or buy liquidation merchandise?

The gift-card and store-credit deadline in the company’s announcement was April 6, 2025, so it is not a current redemption offer. Hudson’s Bay Company said select stores would announce sales of fixtures, furnishings, and equipment, but that notice does not establish that any lots remain available. The existence of a Hudson’s Bay liquidation-auction FAQ likewise does not confirm current inventory or that a particular auction is open. Check the specific auction listing and its terms before relying on availability.
