The chip first surfaced in a Chinese CPU reliability and security assessment reported on March 16, 2025, with almost no technical detail. Huawei later identified X90 in HarmonyOS computers and tablets, while its own roadmap separately named Kunpeng 950 as the next server-focused generation.
What the March 2025 report actually revealed
The original discovery was legitimate: a Chinese government-related CPU reliability and security document mentioned a previously unknown HiSilicon Kirin X90. Tom’s Hardware reported the finding on March 16, 2025, and TechPowerUp also covered the state-document reference (Tom’s Hardware; TechPowerUp).
A mention in an evaluation document establishes that a chip had entered some form of assessment. It is not the same as a Huawei product launch or a specification sheet. The report did not establish:
- Manufacturing process or foundry.
- CPU core count, architecture, or clock speeds.
- GPU, NPU, memory standard, or I/O capabilities.
- Thermal design power or performance.
- Target devices, commercial availability, or server qualification.
That distinction matters because the report’s existence was evidence of a real processor, while the idea that it was a Kunpeng successor was interpretation.

Why observers connected X90 with Kunpeng 920
Kunpeng 920 launched in 2019 and became Huawei’s principal Arm server processor. Huawei used related Arm-based computing designs across more than one product category, and no newer publicly documented Kunpeng part had filled the visible gap when X90 appeared.
The context also encouraged speculation. X90 was mentioned in a CPU security-and-reliability document rather than a mobile-phone certification report. At the same time, Huawei was moving toward HarmonyOS computers. Both a PC interpretation and a server interpretation were therefore plausible.
Kunpeng 920 server parts were offered in 24-, 32-, 48- and 64-core configurations, with clocks up to 3.0 GHz depending on model. Huawei documentation identifies the processor in TaiShan systems and cloud bare-metal instances (Huawei Kunpeng hardware FAQ). None of those facts proves that X90 was designed to replace it.

What Kirin X90 is now known to be
By 2026, public product information associates the X90 family primarily with Huawei’s HarmonyOS PC push. Huawei product listings reported by IT Home identify Kirin X90 in MateBook Pro models and the MateBook Fold, and identify X90-series variants in the MatePad Edge line (IT Home; IT Home firmware and product information report).

This is the strongest public evidence about the chip’s market. X90 is a computer processor in Huawei’s own PC ecosystem, not merely a mobile Kirin part with a speculative desktop role. It does not, however, show that Huawei has placed the same processor in a data-center socket or certified it for server workloads.
The related variants
| Variant | Publicly associated role | Evidence status |
|---|---|---|
| Kirin X90 | HarmonyOS PCs and tablets, including MateBook Pro and MateBook Fold | Product information reported from Huawei listings |
| Kirin X90A | Variant used in some MatePad Edge configurations | Product information reported from Huawei listings |
| Kirin X90 Plus | Higher-performance PC-oriented variant | Public third-party coverage presents it as a PC chip |
| Kirin XE90 | Efficiency-focused processor associated with lightweight PCs | Public PC-focused reporting; detailed specifications remain limited |
Huawei Central attributed a 23% single-core improvement for XE90 over first-generation X90 to Huawei, not to independent testing (Huawei Central). A reported 10-core layout—four high-performance cores at 2.45 GHz, four larger cores at 2.1 GHz and two medium cores at 2.15 GHz—originated from leaks and social-media reporting, so it should not be treated as an official specification (Huawei Central).

X90 versus Kunpeng 920
| Question | Kirin X90 | Kunpeng 920 |
|---|---|---|
| Publicly associated market | HarmonyOS PCs and tablets | Servers, cloud bare-metal instances and TaiShan systems |
| Multi-socket server support | Not established publicly | Documented in supported server platforms |
| ECC and server RAS role | Not publicly documented | Covered by Huawei server documentation |
| Public family naming | Kirin X90, X90A, X90 Plus and XE90 | Kunpeng 920 |
| Confirmed successor claim | None | Kunpeng 950 is the stronger announced successor path |
A server replacement would require evidence beyond a similar Arm lineage or a Huawei-designed CPU. Analysts would normally look for a server socket and motherboard platform, ECC memory and reliability features, PCIe and memory-expansion support, virtualization results, operating-system certification, enterprise support, and deployment in TaiShan or Huawei Cloud systems. Current X90 PC evidence establishes none of those requirements.
Kunpeng 920 remains deployed
Kunpeng 920 is old by current CPU-generation standards, but it has not simply disappeared. Huawei Cloud continues to document Kunpeng-based bare-metal offerings, and Huawei’s compatibility database and TaiShan material continue to describe Kunpeng 920 systems (Huawei Cloud specifications; Huawei compatibility query; TaiShan server data sheet).
For example, Huawei documentation describes systems using two 64-core Kunpeng 920 processors at 2.6 GHz with DDR4 memory. Continued documentation and cloud availability indicate an active supported ecosystem, not an announced end of life.

Kunpeng 950 changes the interpretation
In a September 2025 statement, Huawei said it planned to unveil Kunpeng 950 in the first quarter of 2026, with one model offering 96 cores and 192 threads and another offering 192 cores and 384 threads (Huawei announcement).
This is an official roadmap statement, not proof that every listed model was already broadly available or that its performance matched a particular competitor. It is nevertheless important: Huawei has publicly named a next-generation Kunpeng server path. That makes it misleading to present Kirin X90 as the confirmed Kunpeng 920 replacement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How X90 fits Huawei’s chip portfolio
- Kirin: Historically Huawei’s mobile-device branding, now extended to PC processors such as X90.
- Kunpeng: Huawei’s general-purpose Arm server and computing family.
- Ascend: Huawei’s separate AI-accelerator line.
- HiSilicon: Huawei’s chip-design subsidiary.
Huawei may reuse architectural work across categories, but shared design lineage would not make differently branded chips interchangeable. A PC SoC can prioritize integrated graphics, media engines, compact power envelopes and tightly integrated firmware; a server processor must also meet data-center requirements for memory reliability, expansion, virtualization and long support cycles.

Manufacturing claims require caution
The state-report disclosure did not identify X90’s process technology. Later third-party reports have associated X90-family PC processors with SMIC’s 7 nm-class manufacturing, while other reports have circulated stronger 5 nm claims. The available evidence is inconsistent, and neither claim should be presented as settled without Huawei or SMIC documentation, a credible teardown, or independent laboratory analysis.
The same caution applies to sanctions. X90 demonstrates Huawei’s ability to deliver a domestically designed PC processor despite restrictions on access to leading-edge foreign technology. That is evidence of design and product-integration capability, not complete manufacturing independence. Foundry equipment, EDA software, packaging, memory, operating systems and application compatibility remain separate parts of the supply chain.
What remains unknown
- The exact X90 CPU architecture and process node.
- CPU, GPU and NPU specifications for each X90-family variant.
- Thermal limits, memory bandwidth and independent benchmark results.
- Any server socket, ECC/RAS implementation or multi-socket configuration.
- Compatibility with existing Kunpeng platforms and software.
- Whether a future server processor shares technology with X90.
There is also no comparable independent test data that would justify ranking X90 against Apple Silicon, Intel Core Ultra, AMD Ryzen or Qualcomm Snapdragon X. Huawei’s performance claims and leaked specifications must remain clearly separated from third-party measurements.
What this means for buyers and IT planners
HarmonyOS PC buyers
MateBook Pro, MateBook Fold and MatePad Edge systems may suit users who value Huawei-device integration and a domestic HarmonyOS stack. Buyers outside Huawei’s strongest regional ecosystem should verify application support, language options, warranty coverage, peripherals and the availability of any Windows or Linux software they require.
Enterprise infrastructure buyers
Organizations evaluating Huawei Cloud Kunpeng instances or TaiShan servers should assess Arm-native application support, operating-system certification, virtualization, databases, drivers, support lifecycle and replacement parts. Do not assume an X90-based PC processor is interchangeable with a supported Kunpeng server platform.
Bottom line
Kirin X90 was genuinely revealed by a March 2025 state assessment reference, but that document disclosed a name—not a server launch. Subsequent Huawei product information places X90, X90A, X90 Plus and XE90 in PCs and tablets. Huawei’s separate Kunpeng 950 roadmap is the stronger evidence for its next server generation. X90 may share design lineage with Huawei’s broader computing silicon, but no public evidence confirms that it replaces Kunpeng 920 in servers.
