HPE agreed in November 2018 to acquire BlueData, a startup whose EPIC software used Docker containers to provision environments for enterprise AI, machine learning and big-data analytics. HPE wanted to pair that software with its infrastructure and services so organizations could deploy data-intensive workloads on premises, in public clouds or in hybrid settings. The deal was completed in December 2018; today, HPE marks EPIC documentation retired and its base products obsolete and unavailable for sale.
What HPE announced
On November 27, 2018, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) announced a definitive agreement to acquire privately held BlueData, headquartered in Santa Clara, California. HPE described BlueData as a provider of software for enterprise AI and big-data analytics. The announcement did not disclose the purchase price. HPE’s announcement
The deal was an acquisition agreement, not a merger of equals or a disclosed purchase-price transaction. HPE’s FY2018 filing said BlueData’s results would be included in HPE’s Hybrid IT segment. HPE’s FY2018 Form 10-K
What BlueData’s EPIC software did
EPIC used Docker container technology to create and manage environments for AI/ML and big-data analytics. Containers let teams package workloads into isolated environments; BlueData presented EPIC as a way to provision those environments without building each analytics stack from scratch. HPE’s announcement said environments could be provisioned within minutes, a product claim rather than an independent benchmark.

Features HPE highlighted
- ElasticPlane: HPE said it could create on-demand clusters in a multitenant environment.
- IOBoost: HPE described it as delivering performance on par with bare metal while retaining container agility. This was HPE’s product description, not a separately verified performance result.
- DataTap: HPE said it decoupled compute from storage and enabled access to on-premises and cloud-based storage.
These features were described in HPE’s announcement that the acquisition had been completed. HPE’s completion announcement

Why HPE wanted BlueData
HPE positioned BlueData as a software addition to its software-defined infrastructure, Apollo systems and professional services. The strategic aim was to help enterprise customers deploy data-intensive AI/ML and analytics workloads across on-premises infrastructure, public cloud and hybrid environments. HPE’s FY2018 filing also characterized BlueData as an AI/ML and big-data analytics infrastructure provider and placed its results in Hybrid IT.
HPE’s 2018 announcement cited a forecast that the combined AI/ML and big-data market would reach approximately $160 billion by 2022. That was a contemporaneous estimate repeated by HPE, not a current market-size figure; the release text does not identify the forecast’s underlying publisher. Milan Shetti, then an HPE storage and big-data executive, described BlueData as addressing challenges companies faced in implementing AI/ML and analytics. BlueData CEO Kumar Sreekanti characterized the company’s offering as a turnkey, as-a-service experience. Those quotations express the companies’ views, not independent customer assessments.
