HP Bought Humane’s AI Platform for $116 Million—but Not the Ai Pin

HP acquired key Humane AI assets, not an ongoing Ai Pin business. Learn what owners lost, how refunds were described and what HP IQ means for buyers.

HP agreed in February 2025 to acquire key assets from Humane for $116 million: its Cosmos AI platform, technical talent and intellectual property covering more than 300 patents and patent applications. The consumer Ai Pin was not carried on as an HP product: Humane discontinued sales and shut down the servers the device relied on. HP later introduced HP IQ as part of its workplace-AI strategy, but it is not a revived Ai Pin.

What HP acquired from Humane

HP described the transaction as an acquisition of Humane’s key AI capabilities, not as a continuation of every part of the company’s consumer business. Its February 18, 2025 announcement named three main elements:

  • Cosmos: Humane’s AI software platform.
  • People: engineers, architects and product innovators joining HP.
  • Intellectual property: more than 300 patents and patent applications.

HP said the acquired team would form HP IQ, an AI innovation lab within its Technology and Innovation Organization. HP put the announced transaction value at $116 million and said it expected the deal to close by the end of February 2025. The announcement establishes the agreement and its expected timing; it does not, by itself, document the legal closing. HP’s acquisition announcement

That distinction matters: “HP bought Humane” is convenient shorthand, but it can wrongly suggest that HP took over the Ai Pin as a supported product or acquired and continued the whole consumer operation.

What happened to the Ai Pin and its owners

Humane stopped selling the Ai Pin, and the device’s server-dependent features ended when Humane shut down its servers on February 28, 2025, at 12 p.m. Pacific Time. Reports at the time said AI queries, calling, messaging and cloud access would no longer work. Owners were advised to download photos, videos and notes before service ended. The Indian Express’s shutdown coverage Tom’s Guide’s owner guidance

The practical result is that buying a used Ai Pin does not give you a working version of its original cloud-based service. The shutdown concerns server-dependent functions; it should not be confused with a claim that every physical component became incapable of any offline operation.

Refunds were limited, not universal

Contemporaneous reporting described refunds for eligible devices still within Humane’s original 90-day return window, measured from shipment, and prorated refunds for subscriptions. Coverage also described a separate refund approach for customers awaiting replacement charging cases, including cases affected by an overheating or defect issue. These reports do not establish that every owner received a full device refund. Anyone with an unresolved claim should check the original Humane customer-support communications or current HP support channels rather than assume eligibility. Tom’s Guide’s reporting on refunds

Why HP wanted the technology

Humane’s product bet was a dedicated AI device intended to reduce reliance on a smartphone. HP’s stated bet is different: make AI part of existing computers and workplace systems. In announcing the deal, HP said it wanted to accelerate AI software development and coordinate AI requests locally and in the cloud across products including AI PCs, smart printers and connected conference rooms. It framed the acquisition as a way to build more integrated workplace experiences.

That is HP’s strategic rationale, not proof that every Humane technology has migrated unchanged into a shipping HP product. The acquired patents, platform and expertise may inform HP’s work, but the public product announcements do not establish a one-to-one transfer from Cosmos to HP IQ.

What HP IQ is—and what it is not

In 2026 announcements, HP described HP IQ as an intelligence layer for experiences spanning HP AI PCs, workplace devices and meeting spaces. HP listed features including:

  • Ask IQ for text and voice interactions.
  • Analyze for working with personal files, including PDF, TXT, DOC and PPT formats.
  • Notes & Knowledge for retaining and organizing interactions.
  • Meeting Agent for capturing meeting ideas and notes.

HP says many experiences are designed to run locally on an AI PC using a 20-billion-parameter model, with cloud functionality also part of the broader architecture. That is HP’s description of its design, not an independent performance or privacy test. “Local AI” does not establish that every feature runs locally or that no information can leave the device. HP IQ should not be described as the Ai Pin under a new name. HP’s announcements establish that it acquired Cosmos and later presented HP IQ; they do not say that HP IQ is simply Cosmos renamed, nor that the Ai Pin has returned.

Is HP IQ available, and what might it cost?

HP describes availability as staged during 2026 across selected HP AI PCs and workplace devices. Eligibility depends on the particular device and rollout; the feature set may also vary by country and other availability limits. HP’s support page says the future full-feature HP IQ app will have no cost, but that does not mean every HP computer qualifies or that related enterprise services are necessarily free. HP’s HP IQ delivery and availability page

Before relying on a feature for work, check whether the exact PC is supported, whether it is available in your country and language, and whether the required hardware, operating-system version, firmware and HP software are installed. Organizations should also check their rules for local and cloud AI processing and whether deployment requires management through HP Workforce Experience Platform or another supported enterprise tool. HP’s terms say availability can vary by country and warn that AI output may be inaccurate or incomplete. HP IQ terms

What the deal means for buyers

If you own or are considering a used Ai Pin

  • Do not treat the device as an HP-supported product; HP’s asset acquisition did not restore Humane’s servers.
  • If your data was not exported before shutdown, do not assume it remains retrievable through the original service.
  • Evaluate any refund claim against the eligibility terms reported at the time; device and subscription refunds were distinct.
  • Be skeptical of a listing that calls an Ai Pin “working” without clearly explaining that its original server-dependent functions are unavailable.

If you are considering an HP AI PC

Assess the computer on its own merits—hardware, support, price and compatibility—then verify HP IQ availability for that exact model and location. HP IQ is an emerging software layer, not a guaranteed feature of every HP computer and not a substitute for the Ai Pin.

If you are evaluating the strategy

The deal gives HP a team, software platform and patent portfolio that can support its push to differentiate computers and workplace equipment through software. But the Ai Pin’s discontinuation shows why acquiring AI expertise is not the same as validating a standalone consumer gadget. HP’s later strategy embeds AI in products and management systems businesses may already use; whether that becomes useful in practice depends on supported hardware, rollout, data policies and the quality of the delivered features.
