Zopa’s Biscuit current account moved from a beta for existing customers to a wider launch in June 2025, and the bank announced its natural-language AI feature, Ask, in September 2026. The milestones show how Zopa reused technology from its existing products while relying on an outside supplier for the account ledger; they do not, by themselves, establish how well the systems perform.
How Zopa moved Biscuit from beta to launch
Zopa began as a peer-to-peer lender and later became a bank, launching its banking operation in 2020. It closed its peer-to-peer lending operation in 2021, according to Computer Weekly.
The Biscuit current account was initially available to existing Zopa customers in beta from September 2024. In its 30 May 2025 report, Computer Weekly said 60,000 existing customers were using the beta. CEO Jaidev Janardana told the publication: “We wanted to make sure that we got good customer feedback on the day-to-day product and make sure the systems work and can scale.” That describes the purpose of the beta, not an independent assessment of the systems.
In May, Janardana said the account would move beyond beta later in 2025. Zopa launched Biscuit beyond its existing customer base on 24 June 2025, earlier than that forecast, as Computer Weekly reported in its follow-up.

What the technology approach involved
Janardana described Zopa’s technology as service-oriented, with components developed for existing products available for reuse in the current account. Computer Weekly reported that the account’s ledger used technology supplied by Thought Machine. The account was therefore not simply a wholly in-house build: Zopa combined its existing architecture and reusable services with a third-party ledger platform.
In the May 2025 interview, Janardana characterized Zopa’s existing AI use as predictive, supporting rapid decisions. He described generative AI as an experiment intended to help customers understand their finances, and said the bank would use a variety of foundation models rather than build its own. Those were statements about the company’s approach at that time, not evidence that customer-facing generative AI had already launched.

What Zopa announced about Ask
On 16 September 2026, Zopa announced Ask, a natural-language banking capability for Biscuit customers. Zopa describes it as an always-on personal banker for everyday tasks. Its examples include asking about spending, setting limits and splitting bills; its AI page offers the sample prompt, “How much did I spend in Brighton last weekend?” These are examples of intended functionality from Zopa, not independently verified results.
Zopa also says customers who interact with AI have 10% higher customer satisfaction (CSAT), and that AI resolves 65% of customer-service queries. These are company-reported figures; the cited announcement does not establish independent measurement, the measurement period, or that every query is resolved without human support. They should not be read as a guarantee of an individual customer’s experience.

What this means for someone considering Biscuit
The technology story can explain how the account was developed, but it is not a substitute for checking whether its current terms suit your needs. Zopa’s live account and help pages describe eligibility and selectable benefits; the 2025 launch announcement also advertised interest on balances, cashback on bills and instant virtual cards. Rates, benefits and conditions can change, so consult the current Biscuit account page and current-account help pages before applying.
The available reporting does not provide a controlled comparison of Biscuit’s features or AI performance against other banks. If comparing accounts, assess current eligibility, fees and variable rates, benefit conditions, payment features, support options and what tasks the AI can handle—including how to reach a person if needed. Treat performance figures as comparable only when providers explain how and when they were measured.
